Bunocephalus doriae is a small, scaleless banjo catfish of the Paraguay–Paraná and Uruguay river basins in South America, named for the flattened, guitar-shaped body that gives the whole family its common name. It is an unhurried, nocturnal bottom-dweller that spends its days motionless in leaf litter and plant debris, relying on camouflage rather than speed, and it stays genuinely small — a rare case among catfish where the size on the label is close to the size you actually get.

Taxonomy & naming

Bunocephalus doriae was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1902. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, in the subfamily Bunocephalinae, and to the genus Bunocephalus, a group of small South American aspredinids with the family's characteristic flattened head and slender, tapering tail. The species has also been recorded under the synonyms Bunocephalus retropinnis and Dysichthys doriae, an older combination reflecting the historical shuffling of banjo catfish genera; the Catalog of Fishes treats Bunocephalus doriae as the valid name.

The species epithet doriae honours Giacomo Doria, the Italian naturalist and founder of the Museo di storia naturale in Genoa, a common 19th-century practice of dedicating new species to museum patrons and fellow naturalists. The type locality lies in the Río Bermejo/Río Teuco drainage, with records spanning Villarrica, Posadas, Salta and Rio Grande do Sul across the species' Paraguay–Paraná and Uruguay river range.

Morphology

Like all banjo catfishes, Bunocephalus doriae has an unmistakable shape: a broad, dorsoventrally flattened head and forebody tapering abruptly into a long, slender, almost eel-like tail, the whole outline echoing the neck and body of a banjo. The skin is entirely scaleless, covered instead in small tubercles and a mottled, sand-and-bark camouflage pattern of browns and greys that renders the fish nearly invisible against a leaf-litter or sandy substrate.

This is a genuinely small catfish: FishBase lists a maximum of 3.5 in standard length, with other sources giving roughly 4 in total length. That means an adult banjo cat of this species will comfortably suit a modest aquarium — a welcome exception to the size trap that catches out keepers of many other catfish. Being scaleless, it shares the medication sensitivity common to naked-skinned catfish, loaches and similar fish: copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be dosed conservatively, often at half strength.

Habitat

Bunocephalus doriae is native to the Paraguay–Paraná and Uruguay river basins of South America, with records from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. FishBase describes its habitat as clearwater streams with sandy to muddy bottoms, at shallow depths of roughly 0–8 ft and moderate flow up to about 19.5 in per second.

Detailed water chemistry data for this species is sparse, but the habitat description points to soft, clear, tropical-to-subtropical stream conditions typical of its range rather than blackwater extremes; a neutral-to-slightly-acidic, moderately soft setup in the low-to-mid 20s °C is a reasonable, cache-supported estimate rather than a documented ideal. It is a facultative air-breather, an adaptation that lets it tolerate the lower oxygen levels that can occur among dense plant debris and leaf litter, where it spends most of its time hidden.

Feeding

This is a nocturnal, benthic micro-predator and scavenger. FishBase records its diet as chironomid (midge) larvae, oligochaete worms and other aquatic insect larvae, gleaned from the sand and silt of the stream bed after dark. By day it lies buried or hidden in plant debris, ambushing anything small that comes within reach rather than actively hunting.

In the aquarium it will take sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and other small frozen or live foods, but because it is strictly nocturnal it should be fed after the lights go out; in a mixed community it is easily out-competed for food by more active daytime fish if that rhythm is ignored.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour in Bunocephalus doriae specifically has not been documented in the sources available here. What is known comes from the wider banjo catfish family: in several Aspredinidae, the female carries her fertilised eggs attached to the skin of her belly on small fleshy stalks called cotylephores, brooding them externally until they hatch — a strategy quite unlike the free-scattered or nest-guarded spawning of most other catfish families.

Whether Bunocephalus doriae follows this egg-carrying pattern or a different one has not been confirmed for this species; the safest statement is that its reproductive behaviour remains poorly known.

Breeding

Bunocephalus doriae is not established as a regularly bred aquarium fish, and no aquarium spawning account appears in the sources consulted. Given that some banjo catfishes carry eggs on the female's belly skin rather than laying them in a nest or scattering them in open water, any breeding attempt would need to accommodate that possibility rather than assuming a conventional egg-scatter or cave-spawn setup.

Until more is documented, keepers should treat this species as effectively unbred in captivity and enjoy it for its camouflage and quiet bottom-dwelling habits rather than as a breeding project.

In the aquarium

Because it tops out around 3.5 in SL (about 4 in TL), Bunocephalus doriae is one of the few catfish in this family that genuinely stays small — a 23.5 in tank is cited as a workable minimum, though a soft sand or fine substrate and a generous layer of leaf litter or plant debris to hide in matter more than raw floor space. It is peaceful, entirely inoffensive to tankmates, and almost never seen during the day; expect it to emerge only after dark.

As a scaleless fish, it needs conservative dosing of copper-based medications and many standard treatments, in line with other naked-skinned catfish. It lacks the large, tangling, venomous spines of bigger catfish families, but should still be handled gently — scoop it with a container rather than a net where possible to avoid damaging its soft, unscaled skin. Being a facultative air-breather, it tolerates modest oxygen fluctuations better than many fish, but stable, clean water remains important. Keep it with calm bottom- and mid-water tankmates that won't outcompete it for food after lights-out.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Bunocephalus doriae as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across the Paraguay–Paraná and Uruguay river systems and FishBase's note of low vulnerability to fishing pressure and no commercial fisheries interest.

It is not a species targeted for food or large-scale aquarium export, and its main conservation relevance is as an indicator of the general health of the clearwater streams it inhabits across Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay — habitats under the same broad pressures of land-use change and water-quality decline that affect the wider Paraná basin.
