Taxonomy & naming

Triportheus nematurus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858. It belongs to the genus Triportheus, a group of laterally compressed, keel-bellied characins sometimes placed in their own family, Triportheidae, and at other times treated as a subfamily within the broader Characidae/Serrasalmidae assemblage — classification of the group has shifted across sources, and this article follows the Catalog of Fishes convention of keeping the genus Triportheus intact rather than reassigning it.

The species is native to the Paraná-Paraguay river system and has occasionally been imported into the aquarium trade mislabelled as "Triportheus cf. nematurus" or confused with unrelated Congo tetra look-alikes, a mix-up noted in hobby import documentation. Positive identification within Triportheus relies on keel shape, fin-ray counts and body proportions rather than colour pattern, since most species in the genus share a similar silvery, laterally compressed profile. The name Triportheus paranensis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Triportheus nematurus has the classic "keeled hatchet-tetra" body plan: a strongly laterally compressed, elongated silver body with a pronounced ventral keel running from the throat back toward the anal fin, giving the belly a blade-like profile in cross-section. Unlike the true hatchetfishes of the family Gasteropelecidae, its pectoral fins are not enlarged into wing-like gliding structures — the keel, not the fins, is the fish's most distinctive anatomical feature.

FishBase records a maximum published size of 7 in standard length for wild specimens; hobby sources report aquarium individuals reaching approximately 8 in total length. This makes it a mid-sized characin, notably larger than most tetras kept in the hobby but well short of the true giants of the wider Serrasalmidae/characin assemblage such as pacus.
