Taxonomy & naming
Piaractus mesopotamicus was described by the Argentine naturalist Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg in 1887 as Myletes mesopotamicus, a name reflecting its type locality in "Mesopotamia," the riverine region of Argentina between the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. Like most of the pacu lineage, it has cycled through several genus placements — including Colossoma — before settling in Piaractus, a small genus of large-bodied Serrasalmidae distinguished from the true piranhas (Pygocentrus, Serrasalmus) by a single row of flattened, molar-like crushing teeth rather than blade-like cutting teeth.
The family Serrasalmidae, which unites piranhas, pacus and silver dollars within the order Characiformes, has undergone substantial revision as the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) has worked through its genera; several older "silver dollar" and pacu genera have been split or reassigned in recent decades. Piaractus mesopotamicus itself has kept a stable modern combination, and it is most often confused in trade literature with its larger Amazonian congener, the tambaqui Piaractus (formerly Colossoma) macropomum, and with the related black pacu Colossoma macropomum's own trade synonyms — all names swirl around the same basic anatomical package of a deep, rounded body and crushing dentition.
Morphology
The pacu shares the piranha's deep, laterally compressed, disc-like body plan, but the resemblance ends at the mouth: instead of interlocking triangular blades, Piaractus mesopotamicus carries a single row of broad, flattened, densely packed molar-like teeth in both jaws, closely resembling human molars in overall shape and function. FishBase lists a maximum recorded size of 19.5 in standard length and up to about 20 kg, and while aquarium-trade juveniles are sold at only a few centimetres, that scale-up is not slow or optional — pacus are fast-growing fish that routinely outgrow home tanks within one to two years.
Colouration is a silvery-grey to olive body, often with a yellowish or orange wash on the lower flanks and fins in mature fish, and a robust, rounded caudal fin. The body deepens and the head becomes more heavily built with age, and the powerful jaw musculature needed to crack palm nuts and hard seeds is visible in older individuals as a noticeably thick, muscular head profile.
Habitat
Piaractus mesopotamicus is native to the Paraguay-Paraná river basin of South America, with FishBase citing a range roughly between 15°S–38°S and 66°W–42°W, spanning parts of Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina. It is a subtropical freshwater species and a potamodromous migrator, meaning it undertakes seasonal upstream and downstream movements within river systems tied to the flood pulse rather than migrating to the sea.
During the flood season the species moves into seasonally inundated forest along the Paraná and Paraguay floodplains to feed on fallen fruit, nuts and seeds washed into the shallows, an ecological role that makes it an important seed disperser for floodplain forest trees. Because its native range sits at higher latitudes than the equatorial Amazon, Piaractus mesopotamicus experiences a genuinely subtropical climate with a cooler season, unlike many purely tropical Serrasalmidae — a detail worth keeping in mind when comparing its temperature tolerance to Amazonian relatives.
Feeding
Piaractus mesopotamicus is a frugivore-leaning omnivore. In the wild its molar-like teeth are used to crush seeds, nuts and fallen fruit during the flooded-forest phase of its migration, supplemented by other plant material and some animal matter; this diet is central to the species' role as a seed disperser in the Paraguay-Paraná floodplain. Juveniles take a broader diet including small invertebrates as they grow.
In the aquarium or pond, keepers report success feeding a varied omnivore diet: high-quality pellets formulated for omnivorous fish, plus vegetables such as peas, cucumber and melon, and occasional protein. The cached care notes explicitly flag that this species carries a significant bioload and requires a very large system to support it — feeding is rarely the limiting factor in keeping a pacu; space is.
Mating
There is no evidence in the available sources of natural courtship or pairing behaviour being documented or exploited in captivity for Piaractus mesopotamicus. What is well documented is the reproductive trigger in the wild: spawning is tied to the seasonal flood pulse of the Paraguay-Paraná system, with migratory movement upstream ahead of the rains cueing gonadal maturation and eventual release of gametes in open water during high-water conditions — a strategy shared with many large Neotropical migratory characiforms rather than a nest- or pair-based courtship system.
Because this flood-pulse trigger is difficult to replicate outside a river system, commercial hatcheries do not rely on natural courtship cues at all; instead they induce spawning directly with hormones (see Breeding). Breeding
Piaractus mesopotamicus is a migratory food-fish, not a home-aquarium breeding project. In the wild it is a long-distance spawning migrator whose reproduction is triggered by the seasonal flood pulse of the Paraguay-Paraná basin. At commercial scale it is farm-bred using induced, hormone-triggered spawning — documented protocols use human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), salmon pituitary extract, and sGnRHa (salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue) implants to stimulate female breeders to release eggs, since captive broodstock will not spawn spontaneously without the natural flood cue.
This species is essentially never bred in the home aquarium: it grows far too large for a hobbyist tank long before reaching sexual maturity, and even mature, correctly sized broodstock require the hormone-induction protocols used in aquaculture rather than a natural pairing and nest-building sequence. Anyone encountering "breeding" claims for this species outside a fish farm or research hatchery context should treat them with real skepticism.
In the aquarium
The defining fact for a prospective keeper is size: this is a fish that starts life as an inexpensive 2 in juvenile and can reach roughly a metre and up to about 20 kg as an adult. No standard home aquarium can house a mature Piaractus mesopotamicus, and the cached care notes are blunt about this — it is described as unsuitable for living-room aquaria and demands a very large system, in practice something closer to a large pond or public-aquarium-scale exhibit, well before it reaches full size. Prospective keepers should think of this species the way they would a farm animal purchased as a cute infant: charming at the point of sale, genuinely unmanageable within a year or two.
Where it is kept short-term or in large systems, water parameters of roughly 72–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.8 with moderate hardness (GH 4–12) are cited as suitable, and a robust omnivore diet of pellets, vegetables and occasional protein keeps it healthy. Filtration must be sized for a very large, messy bioload. Above all: a pacu must never be released into local waterways when it outgrows its tank. Feral pacus are an established invasive-species problem on multiple continents, including introduced populations in parts of the United States and elsewhere, and releasing one is both illegal in many jurisdictions and ecologically irresponsible.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Piaractus mesopotamicus as Near Threatened, with the assessment dated 21 December 2020 under criteria A2bcde, reflecting an observed or suspected population decline driven primarily by habitat degradation and fishing pressure across its Paraguay-Paraná range. This is a notable contrast with more widely farmed pacu relatives that are sometimes assumed to be secure simply because they are commercially abundant in aquaculture.
The species supports substantial commercial fisheries and aquaculture production in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina, and farmed stock reduces some pressure on wild populations for food production, but the IUCN assessment indicates that wild populations themselves remain in decline. Its migratory, flood-pulse-dependent life history also makes it vulnerable to river damming and flow regulation across the Paraguay-Paraná basin, a pressure shared with many other large Neotropical migratory fishes.
