Piaractus brachypomus, the pacu widely — and misleadingly — sold in the aquarium trade as a small, round, harmless-looking juvenile, is in reality one of the largest characins in South America: a deep-bodied relative of the piranhas that reaches roughly 34.5 in total length and up to 25 kg in the wild, armed not with piranha-style shearing teeth but with blunt, human-like molars built for crushing seeds and nuts. It ranges across the Amazon and Orinoco basins, where it plays an important role dispersing seeds through flooded forest. Sold at the size of a coin and capable of outgrowing almost any home aquarium within a couple of years, it is a pond and food fish rather than a display fish, and one that must never be released — escaped and dumped pacu have become an invasive nuisance on several continents. This article is upfront about that size trap before anything else.

Taxonomy & naming

Piaractus brachypomus was described by Georges Cuvier in 1818, and its taxonomic history is a useful snapshot of how hard the family Serrasalmidae — piranhas, pacus and silver dollars, within the order Characiformes — has been revised. The species has at various times been placed in the genera Myletes and Colossoma, appearing in older literature and some hobby sources as Colossoma brachypomum or Colossoma bidens. Modern taxonomy, following the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), separates the pacu genus Piaractus (which also contains the Paraná/Paraguay species P. mesopotamicus) from Colossoma, which today holds only the tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum — the other giant Amazonian pacu with which P. brachypomus is frequently confused and hybridized in aquaculture.

The common name pirapitinga is used across the Amazon and Orinoco region; "pacu" itself is a general Tupi-derived term applied to several deep-bodied, fruit-eating serrasalmids, so it is not unique to this species. In the aquarium trade it circulates under a tangle of names — red-bellied pacu, red pacu, silver pacu — that add to the confusion with both true piranhas and the tambaqui, and buyers should not rely on a trade name alone to judge the fish they are getting.

Morphology

Piaractus brachypomus has the classic pacu build: a deep, laterally compressed, disc-like body plan superficially similar to a piranha's, which is exactly what causes so much confusion at the point of sale. The giveaway is the mouth — instead of a single row of interlocking, blade-like piranha teeth, the pacu carries a row of flattened, blunt, distinctly human-like molars in both jaws, adapted for crushing hard seeds, nuts and fruit rather than shearing flesh. FishBase records a maximum size of 34.5 in total length and up to 25 kg, with individuals documented living to nearly three decades in the wild.

Juveniles sold in the trade are typically only a few centimetres long and often show a scattering of dark spots or blotches over a silvery body, sometimes with a reddish or orange wash on the lower flanks and fins that gives rise to the "red pacu" name — the same red belly coloration that causes some buyers to mistake it for a red-bellied piranha. As the fish matures the spotting usually fades and the body deepens further, developing the heavy-shouldered, thick-set profile typical of adult pacu. Growth from a coin-sized juvenile toward that adult size is fast, which is at the heart of why this species is so commonly outgrown and abandoned.

Habitat

Piaractus brachypomus is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, ranging across Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador, and it has become an important species in Neotropical inland fisheries and aquaculture across that native range. It inhabits large lowland rivers, floodplain lakes and, critically, seasonally flooded forest (várzea and igapó), following the region's pronounced flood pulse to reach fruiting trees during high water.

Water across its range is broadly warm and ranges from soft and mildly acidic to closer to neutral depending on the tributary — Seriously Fish records a tolerance from roughly pH 4.8 to 7.5 and 0–15 °dH, and temperatures in the 73–82 °F band, reflecting the diversity of blackwater, whitewater and clearwater habitats it uses across such a large native range rather than one narrow chemistry profile.

Feeding

Piaractus brachypomus is a frugivore first and foremost: in the wild it feeds heavily on fruit, seeds and nuts that fall into flooded forest from the canopy above, crushing them with its blunt molar teeth, and in doing so acts as an important seed disperser for numerous Amazonian and Orinocan tree species — a genuine ecological role, not just a dietary curiosity. It also takes other plant material and some animal matter opportunistically, making it more broadly omnivorous than a strict fruit specialist.

In the aquarium or pond, this translates into an easy but bulky feeder: high-quality pellets, a variety of vegetables and fruit, and occasional protein are all readily accepted, and a pacu of any size rarely refuses food. The practical challenge is less what it eats and more how much — a fish approaching adult size has an adult-sized appetite and bioload, and undersized housing compounds both problems quickly.

Mating

Piaractus brachypomus is a long-distance migratory spawner, following the same flood-pulse cues that shape its feeding ecology: adults move upriver in coordinated spawning migrations timed to the rise of the annual flood, gathering to spawn in open water rather than pairing off at a fixed site. This life-history pattern — shared with its relative the tambaqui and with other large Neotropical migratory characins — means courtship and pairing behaviour of the kind documented in substrate-spawning fish (including true piranhas) simply does not apply here.

There is no meaningful external sexual dimorphism documented for the species; sex cannot be reliably determined by colour or body shape, and in both wild fisheries and commercial hatcheries broodstock are typically sexed by hormonal profiling or by expressing milt or eggs under gentle pressure rather than by appearance.

Breeding

This is a migratory food-fish, not a hobby-breedable aquarium species, and that should be stated plainly. In the wild, Piaractus brachypomus spawns during upriver migrations tied to the flood pulse, broadcasting eggs in open water at a scale and over a distance that no home aquarium can replicate. Because it is farmed at very large commercial scale across South America (and increasingly in aquaculture in parts of Asia) as a food fish, essentially all captive-bred pacu reaching the trade originate from hatchery production using hormone-induced spawning (hypophysation), not from spontaneous pairing in a tank.

There are no credible reports of Piaractus brachypomus being bred by home aquarists: the species requires pond-scale space, a natural or hormonally triggered migratory spawning cue, and open-water broadcast spawning conditions that a closed aquarium cannot provide. Anyone encountering pacu fry or juveniles in the trade should assume commercial hatchery origin rather than aquarium propagation.

In the aquarium

The single most important thing to know about Piaractus brachypomus before buying one is its adult size: this is not a community or even a typical "large aquarium" fish — it is a species that reaches roughly 34.5 in and up to 25 kg in the wild, and even farmed or aquarium-raised specimens commonly exceed 12–17.5 in within a couple of years of being sold as a 1.5–2 in juvenile. Seriously Fish puts the realistic minimum housing at over 2,130 US gal for an adult, a volume well beyond almost any home setup, which is why long-term keepers overwhelmingly house this species in large ponds or public-aquarium-scale systems rather than living-room tanks.

While young, pacu are generally peaceable with tankmates too large to be prey, though crowding in an undersized tank can bring out fin-nipping. As they grow, their size, appetite and waste output alone make them unsuitable for anything but the largest private systems. Critically, a pacu must never be released into local waterways when it outgrows its tank: escaped and deliberately released pacu are established as invasive fish in parts of the southern United States, Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and turn up as unwelcome catches across dozens of U.S. states outside their native range. Anyone considering this species should plan — before buying a juvenile — for an adult that needs a pond, or should not buy one at all.

Conservation

Piaractus brachypomus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List (Not Evaluated) despite its wide native range and importance to fisheries and aquaculture across the Amazon and Orinoco basins. It supports substantial commercial and subsistence fisheries and is one of the most widely farmed native fish in South American aquaculture, both of which mean pressure on wild stocks is mixed with a very large captive-bred supply feeding both the food and aquarium trades.

The more pressing conservation story for this species runs outward rather than inward: because of uncontrolled aquarium releases and farm escapes, P. brachypomus is established as an invasive species well outside its native range, including the southern United States, Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, where it can compete with and alter habitat for native fish. Within its native range, the general pressures on Amazonian and Orinocan floodplain fish — damming that disrupts the flood-pulse spawning migration it depends on, deforestation and overfishing of migratory stocks — are relevant long-term concerns for a species this dependent on an intact flood cycle.
