Piaractus orinoquensis, the Venezuelan or Orinoco pacu, is a big-river relative of the piranhas that gets sold in the aquarium trade at a deceptively small size and grows into something else entirely: wild specimens reach roughly 31.5 in total length and, by the standards of its close relative Piaractus brachypomus, well into double-digit kilograms. In place of a piranha's slicing teeth it carries a set of blunt, human-like molars built for crushing seeds, nuts and fallen fruit in flooded Orinoco forest, making it an important seed disperser rather than a predator. It was only formally split from Piaractus brachypomus and described as its own species in 2019, based on material from the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia. This is a pond and food-fish, not a living-room aquarium fish, and a pacu that outgrows its tank must never be released — feral pacus are already an invasive problem on multiple continents.

Taxonomy & naming

Piaractus orinoquensis was described in 2019 by Escobar L., Ota, Machado-Allison, Andrade-López, Farias and Hrbek, who separated it from the widespread red-bellied pacu, Piaractus brachypomus, on the basis of material from the Orinoco River basin. For decades Orinoco pacus were simply identified as P. brachypomus (and, in older literature, sometimes placed in the genus Colossoma), so the redescription formally recognised what fishers and aquaculturists in Venezuela and Colombia had long treated as a locally distinct fish. The genus Piaractus sits in the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, a family that molecular work has split hard in recent years, moving several silver-dollar genera out of the old catch-all Myleus and separating the pacu lineages from Colossoma.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference point for the current, valid combination Piaractus orinoquensis, and this article follows that genus placement. Because the split from P. brachypomus is recent, expect to see older aquaculture and fisheries sources — and some aquarium-trade listings — still using the name Piaractus brachypomus or Colossoma sp. for Orinoco-basin pacus; the epithet orinoquensis simply means "of the Orinoco," naming the river system where the type material was collected.

Morphology

Piaractus orinoquensis has the classic pacu build: a deep-bodied, laterally compressed, disc-like silhouette that looks superficially like an oversized, heavy-shouldered piranha at a glance, but the resemblance stops at the mouth. Instead of the interlocking triangular blades of a true piranha, pacus carry a row of flattened, rounded, molar-like teeth adapted for crushing hard plant material rather than shearing flesh — a dead giveaway when comparing the two groups side by side. The cached FishBase record lists a maximum length of 31.5 in total length for the species, and congeneric Piaractus brachypomus is well documented reaching well over 20 kg at that kind of size, so this is a genuinely large-bodied fish, not a piranha-sized novelty.

Colouration is a fairly plain silvery-grey to olive over the body, often with a darker dorsal saddle and, in some individuals, a warmer wash on the lower flanks and fins reminiscent of its piranha relatives — but the overall impression is a deep, robust, almost bream-like body rather than the sharp-edged, aggressive profile of Serrasalmus or Pygocentrus. Juveniles sold in the trade at a few centimetres bear little visual resemblance to the massive adult they will become, which is precisely the trap that catches unprepared buyers.

Habitat

Piaractus orinoquensis is native to the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela and Colombia, a large tropical river system with a strongly seasonal flood pulse. Like other big Serrasalmidae of the region, it moves through a mosaic of main-channel river habitat, flooded forest (várzea/igapó-equivalent inundation zones) and floodplain lakes as water levels rise and fall through the year, following the same flood-pulse hydrology that governs migratory pacus across the Orinoco and Amazon systems.

Water conditions for the closely related Piaractus brachypomus, used here as the best available proxy per the cache, run warm — roughly 77–84 °F — with a pH around 6.0–7.5, consistent with the generally warm, soft-to-neutral, mildly acidic conditions typical of Neotropical Orinoco and Amazon lowland rivers. Structure such as flooded vegetation and submerged wood is important seasonally as feeding and shelter habitat during high water, tracking the availability of fruit and seeds falling from the inundated forest canopy.

Feeding

Piaractus orinoquensis is a frugivore-leaning omnivore. Its blunt, crushing dentition is built to process seeds, nuts and fallen fruit from the flooded forest during high water, a diet that makes pacus important seed dispersers for Neotropical floodplain trees, moving viable seeds well beyond the parent tree as the fish forage and travel. Stomach-content work on the genus and its close relatives also documents a supplementary intake of other plant material and some animal matter, consistent with a broadly opportunistic omnivore rather than a specialised herbivore.

In captivity — whether aquaculture ponds or the rare very large aquarium — pacus of this genus take a varied diet readily: vegetables, fruit, high-quality omnivore or herbivore pellets and occasional protein, mirroring the diet documented for the congener Piaractus brachypomus. Keepers should lean the diet toward plant matter and pellets rather than treating the fish as a piranha-style carnivore; it is an opportunistic feeder on small fish and other animal matter when the chance arises, but that is not its primary ecological role.

Mating

Piaractus orinoquensis is a migratory food-fish, and its reproduction follows the same pattern documented for its close relative Piaractus brachypomus and other large Serrasalmidae pacus: spawning is tied to the flood pulse, with adults undertaking long-distance upstream migrations timed to rising water levels rather than pairing off and courting in a fixed territory the way a piranha does. There is no evidence in the cache of aquarium- or hobby-scale courtship behaviour for this species, and none should be expected — the fish reaches sexual maturity at a size and age that puts natural spawning entirely out of reach of home aquaria.

Commercially, pacu reproduction in this genus is achieved through induced (hormone-triggered) spawning: broodstock are given pituitary or synthetic hormone injections to trigger ovulation and spawning behaviour on demand, because in captivity outside of a natural flood cycle the fish will generally not spawn spontaneously. This is standard aquaculture practice for the congener P. brachypomus and is treated here as the applicable model for P. orinoquensis absent species-specific breeding literature in the cache.

Breeding

Piaractus orinoquensis is not a home-aquarium breeding project, and no account should imply otherwise. In the wild it is a long-distance spawning migrator whose reproduction is keyed to the Orinoco's flood pulse, and in captivity it is propagated almost exclusively at commercial aquaculture scale using hormone-induced spawning — the same induced-breeding technique documented for the sister species Piaractus brachypomus, where pituitary extract or synthetic hormone analogues are used to trigger ovulation in pond-raised broodstock that will not spawn naturally without the flood cue.

There are no parental-care behaviours to describe because this is a broadcast, migratory spawning strategy with no nest, no guarding and no brooding — eggs and larvae develop and disperse in open water, supported downstream by the productivity of the flooded system. For the aquarist the practical takeaway is blunt: this species grows far too large, and breeds on a migratory/hormonal cue far too specialised, for anyone to responsibly plan on breeding it at home.

In the aquarium

Piaractus orinoquensis is sold small and grows enormous — up to roughly 31.5 in total length in the wild, with the congener Piaractus brachypomus reliably documented above 20 kg at comparable size — and no reasonable home aquarium can house an adult pacu of this genus long-term. This is fundamentally a pond and food-fish species farmed for the table across parts of South America, not a display animal for a living-room tank, and any keeper taking on a juvenile needs a realistic plan for a fish that will eventually need pond-scale space, if such a plan is even feasible in their climate and jurisdiction.

While small, it can be kept in a very large, robustly filtered aquarium on a diet weighted toward vegetables, fruit and quality pellets, in warm water in the range documented for its close relative (roughly 77–84 °F, pH 6.0–7.5); décor should assume the fish will treat soft plants as food. The single most important welfare and ecological rule for this species is the same one that applies to every pacu in the trade: never release it. Feral pacus have already established as invasive species outside their native range on multiple continents, competing with native fish and altering vegetation, so a pacu that has outgrown its keeper's tank should go to an aquaculture facility, a public aquarium, or be humanely rehomed through proper channels — never into a local waterway.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Piaractus orinoquensis as Vulnerable (VU), per the cached assessment. That status is consistent with a species restricted to a single major river system — the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia — where it faces the pressures common to large-bodied, commercially fished Neotropical characins: targeted fisheries for food, and the broader habitat pressures on Orinoco floodplain and flooded-forest systems that the species depends on for feeding and migration.

Unlike its wide-ranging, farmed congener Piaractus brachypomus — which is propagated at aquaculture scale across South America and is not considered threatened — the more geographically restricted P. orinoquensis appears to carry meaningfully more conservation concern, underscoring that not every large Serrasalmidae pacu is a secure, farm-abundant species. As with many recently split Orinoco and Amazon basin fishes, taxonomic confusion with its more common relative may also complicate accurately tracking harvest and trade pressure specific to this species.
