Taxonomy & naming
Prochilodus lineatus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1837. It belongs to the family Prochilodontidae — a small family of detritivorous South American characiforms sometimes still lumped informally with the pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae in older or popular accounts, but recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as its own distinct family within Characiformes. The genus Prochilodus currently holds roughly a dozen valid species distributed across Amazonian, Orinoco and Paraná-Paraguay drainages, distinguished from the related genus Semaprochilodus mainly by fin colouration and details of the mouth and dentition.
The species is widely known in the aquarium and food-fish trade under its Portuguese/Spanish vernacular name, sábalo (or sábalo del Paraná), and in the English literature as the streaked prochilod, referring to the fine dark longitudinal lines along its flanks. It should not be confused with Prochilodus species from more northerly Amazon or Orinoco basins, which differ in range and some meristic detail; keep the genus and specific epithet as given here rather than any older synonymy.
Morphology
Prochilodus lineatus has a moderately deep, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body typical of a strong-swimming migratory characin, silver over most of the flanks with fine dark longitudinal stripes running along the scale rows and a dusky to olive dorsal surface. FishBase records a maximum published size of 31.5 in total length, with fish commonly encountered around 18 in standard length in the wild and adults reaching several kilograms in weight — this is a genuinely large characin, not a nano or community-tank fish.
The most distinctive feature is the mouth: small, highly protrusible and oriented to form an inverted funnel or sucker-like disc when extended, lined with numerous small, fine teeth adapted for scraping rather than biting or grasping prey. This specialised mouth, along with a long gut typical of a detritivore, sets it apart at a glance from predatory characins such as piranhas or the dorado. Fins are unremarkable in colour compared with the more vividly marked Semaprochilodus, generally translucent to dusky rather than banded.
Habitat
The species is native to the Paraná-Paraguay river system and the Paraíba do Sul basin of southeastern Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay — a subtropical rather than fully tropical range, and one where water temperatures swing more with the seasons than in the equatorial Amazon. It inhabits main river channels, floodplain lagoons and backwaters, moving between these habitats on a seasonal cycle tied to the flood pulse: adults disperse into flooded marginal habitat and floodplain lakes to feed and rear young during high water, then concentrate in the main river channel during the dry season.
Water across its range documented in the literature spans a notably broad tolerance, from pH 4.0 up to nearly 9.8, with optimal survival closer to neutral-to-slightly-alkaline conditions (roughly pH 8.7–9.2) and a temperature range of about 68–86 °F — cooler at the low end than most Amazonian aquarium characins, reflecting the more temperate, subtropical character of the Paraná-Paraguay system. Early life stages (eggs and larvae) are considerably more pH-sensitive than adults, which matters for the hatchery programs described under Breeding.
Feeding
Prochilodus lineatus is an omnivorous detritivore, not a predator. Its inverted-funnel mouth is used to graze algae, organic detritus, biofilm and sediment from submerged surfaces, roots and the riverbed, and the species plays an outsized ecological role in its native rivers by processing and redistributing huge volumes of organic material as it moves through the water column and along the substrate — a role documented in ecological studies of the Paraná system.
In any setting large enough to hold it — public aquaria, large ponds or aquaculture facilities — the species readily accepts a varied diet built around vegetable matter and prepared foods: spirulina and algae-based wafers, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets and general detritivore/omnivore formulations, mirroring its natural grazing habit rather than any need for live or meaty foods.
Mating
Prochilodus lineatus is a long-distance migratory spawner. Mature adults undertake an upstream spawning migration timed to the seasonal flood pulse, a movement widely known by the regional term piracema across much of the Paraná-Paraguay and Paraíba do Sul drainages — a term that describes both the physical fish run and the migratory spawning process itself. Courtship and pairing as understood in aquarium-bred characins is not really applicable here: spawning is a mass, open-water event synchronised across large schools rather than a paired or territorial behaviour.
Because this migratory trigger and open-water spawning cannot realistically be reproduced in home aquarium conditions, essentially all successful reproduction of this species — whether for wild population recruitment or for aquaculture and food-fish production — depends on the natural flood-pulse migration or, in captivity, on artificial hormone induction (see Breeding).
Breeding
This is a migratory food-fish species, and it should be understood as such rather than compared to substrate-spawning or egg-scattering aquarium characins. In the wild, Prochilodus lineatus spawns in open water during its upstream piracema migration, cued by rising water levels and the flood pulse; eggs and larvae then drift downstream to floodplain lakes and backwaters that serve as nursery habitat, with no parental care of any kind after spawning.
In captivity the species is farmed and bred extensively across Brazil and neighbouring countries for food-fish and aquaculture production, but this breeding is achieved through hormone-induced spawning at commercial hatchery scale, not through home-aquarium conditioning. The species' large adult size, migratory spawning trigger and open-water reproductive strategy make it essentially unbred in the home hobby, and prospective keepers should not expect it to reproduce in a standard aquarium under any circumstances.
In the aquarium
Prochilodus lineatus is a poor fit for the overwhelming majority of home aquariums. With a documented maximum size of 31.5 in and a natural weight of several kilograms, it needs the kind of large-volume, heavily filtered system more typical of a public aquarium, a large pond, or an aquaculture facility than a home fish room, and keepers should plan for its full adult size rather than the juvenile trade size at which it is occasionally sold. It is a shoaling, open-water fish in nature and, where kept at all, does best in groups in very large systems rather than as a solitary specimen in a modest tank.
As a grazing detritivore it is not aggressive or predatory toward tankmates, unlike many of the more commonly kept characins in this broader group, and its bioload and grazing habit are better suited to large planted ponds or purpose-built systems than to typical home décor. Given its size and specialised needs, it is realistically a species for public aquaria, research collections and aquaculture rather than the home hobby — anyone acquiring juveniles should have a concrete plan for a large-volume home before the fish outgrows a standard tank.
Conservation
Prochilodus lineatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across the Paraná-Paraguay and Paraíba do Sul basins and populations that remain abundant and are actively managed as a fishery resource across much of its range. It supports major commercial and subsistence fisheries in Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and Uruguay and is extensively farmed for food, both of which keep pressure on wild stocks manageable relative to its overall abundance.
Because the species' reproduction depends entirely on long, uninterrupted river migrations timed to seasonal flooding, the principal long-term threat it faces is not overfishing but river fragmentation: dams and other barriers across the Paraná-Paraguay system can block or disrupt the piracema migration that the species needs to spawn, a pressure noted in the regional fisheries and ecological literature even though it has not yet driven a change in the species' overall Red List status.
