Taxonomy & naming
Steindachnerina insculpta was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Agustín Fernández-Yépez in 1948. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — the toothless detritivorous characins sometimes called curimatas — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Steindachnerina, a widespread Neotropical genus of small, laterally compressed grazers named for the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) governs the valid combination, and the species is currently accepted under its original genus placement with no outstanding synonymy issues noted in the sources consulted.
Curimatidae sits within the broader characiform radiation that also contains the Serrasalmidae (piranhas, pacus and silver dollars) covered elsewhere in this group, but the two families could hardly differ more in feeding biology: curimatids lack functional jaw teeth entirely as adults, relying instead on pharyngeal structures and a specialized gut to process fine organic sediment. Steindachnerina insculpta is known in Brazil by the vernacular name "papa-terra" (roughly "earth-eater"), a name that plainly reflects its detritivorous habit rather than any resemblance to a predatory piranha.
Morphology
Steindachnerina insculpta is a small, slender, laterally compressed characin with a silvery body typical of the curimatid grazers — nothing like the deep-bodied, blunt-jawed profile of a true piranha in this same family group. FishBase records a maximum length of 7.5 in total length in females and 6.5 in in males, with a maximum recorded weight of about 48 g, making this one of the smaller, unremarkable-looking fish in the "Hemiodus & minor characins" group rather than one of its outsized food-fish or predator members.
As in other curimatids, the mouth is small, subterminal to inferior, and toothless in the adult, an adaptation for browsing detritus and biofilm off the substrate rather than biting prey or plant matter. Habitat
Steindachnerina insculpta is documented from the upper Paraná River basin in Brazil, where it has been studied in the Furnas Reservoir in Minas Gerais. It is described as benthopelagic and potamodromous — that is, it migrates within freshwater systems rather than moving between fresh and salt water, a pattern consistent with river-and-reservoir populations that track seasonal water-level and flow changes typical of the Paraná system.
As a subtropical Paraná-basin species, S. insculpta experiences a more seasonal, cooler climate than the classic warm Amazonian lowland characins covered elsewhere in this group; the sources consulted do not report specific temperature or pH figures for the species, so aquarists should treat any numbers as an informed estimate rather than a documented range (see Facts for the caveat).
Feeding
Steindachnerina insculpta is a specialised detritivore, and its diet is one of the best-documented aspects of its biology. A reproductive-biology study of the species in the Furnas Reservoir found it feeds on debris and decomposing organic matter from the substrate, and — notably — that S. insculpta has the greatest intestinal length relative to body size among the bottom-feeding fish examined in that study, a clear anatomical signature of a diet built around low-nutrient detritus that requires a long gut to extract sufficient energy.
This places the species firmly in the "quiet grazer" category of the minor-characin group, alongside other curimatids and Prochilodus-type detritivores, and worlds away from the predatory Brycon and Salminus or the omnivorous piranhas in this same broader family. Mating
The one dedicated reproductive-biology study located for this species, conducted on the Furnas Reservoir population, describes a prolonged reproductive period running from September to March with fractionated (batch) spawning — that is, females release eggs in multiple batches across the season rather than in a single annual spawning event. This is consistent with the seasonal, subtropical hydrology of the upper Paraná basin, where reproductive timing tracks the extended warm-and-wet part of the year rather than a single flood pulse.

What can be said with confidence is scaled from its documented wild biology: this is a small (to roughly 7.5 in), peaceful, bottom-oriented detritivore from a cooler, seasonal river-and-reservoir system, not a fish that poses any of the size, aggression or predation concerns associated with the piranhas, pacus or wolf fish elsewhere in this group.
A keeper who did encounter this species — most likely as an occasional South American import mixed in with other Paraná-basin fish rather than a deliberately stocked species — should expect to provide a soft substrate for natural grazing behaviour, a plain shoaling setup, and a diet supplemented with sinking foods rich in vegetable and detrital matter given its specialised gut. Because no aquarium-specific water parameters, compatible tankmates, or minimum tank size are documented in the sources consulted, this account stops short of prescribing figures it cannot support.
Conservation
