Taxonomy & naming
Triportheus albus was described by the American paleontologist and naturalist Edward Drinker Cope in 1872, based on material from the Amazon basin. It belongs to the family historically placed within Characidae but increasingly treated under Triportheidae in modern classifications that split the old, unwieldy Characidae into narrower, monophyletic families; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the currently accepted placement and should be consulted for the latest family-level treatment, since this group has been in taxonomic flux.
The genus Triportheus currently holds around two dozen described species distributed across the Neotropics, several of which — T. albus, T. angulatus, T. auritus and T. trifurcatus among them — co-occur in the same Amazonian floodplain lakes and can be difficult to separate without close examination. GBIF records the accepted name as Triportheus albus (Cope, 1872), and the species is not currently subject to any proposed synonymy or rename in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
Triportheus albus shows the deep, laterally compressed, keel-bellied body typical of its genus — the "three-doored" name of the genus (from Greek tri-, three, and portheo/thyra referencing the fin arrangement) alludes to the distinctive pectoral-fin structure shared across the group. The pectoral fins are notably enlarged, an adaptation that lets these fish skip and glide briefly across the water's surface when fleeing a predator, in loose parallel with the unrelated true hatchetfishes (Gasteropelecidae).
FishBase records a maximum published size of 10 in total length and a maximum weight around 200 g for the species — a genuinely mid-sized characin, larger than most tetras kept in home aquaria but nowhere near the scale of a pacu or dorado. Colouration is a simple, functional silver typical of open-water schooling fish, which is consistent with its local common name "sardine."
Habitat
The species is native to the Amazon and Tocantins-Araguaia river basins of South America, where it is benthopelagic and shows potamodromous (wholly freshwater migratory) behaviour, moving between river channels and floodplain lakes with the seasonal flood pulse. A phenotypic-plasticity study of Amazonian floodplain lakes documented T. albus at three markedly different type localities — Anavilhanas (blackwater, pH around 4.6), Marchantaria (whitewater, pH around 6.3) and the Tapajós (clearwater, pH around 6.0) — making it one of relatively few fish species in the region confirmed to inhabit all three major Amazonian water types.
FishBase gives a pH range of 5.2–7.0 for the species overall, and this breadth is consistent with the floodplain-lake research: T. albus does not appear to be a water-chemistry specialist, and keepers should not assume it needs extreme soft, acidic blackwater to thrive — moderate, mildly acidic to near-neutral conditions across that range are all documented as natural habitat.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data specific to T. albus were not found in the cached sources, but the closely related and better-studied Triportheus angulatus is documented as an omnivorous surface feeder taking insects, fallen fruit, nuts and seeds alongside plant material — a diet pattern typical of the genus, which forages heavily at and near the surface in flooded-forest and floodplain-lake habitat. Given the shared morphology (upturned mouth, surface-oriented body plan) and co-occurrence with T. angulatus in the same lakes, a broadly similar omnivorous, surface-biased diet is a reasonable expectation for T. albus, though this should be treated as inferred from its relatives rather than confirmed for the species itself.
In the aquarium, Triportheus species and their surface-feeding relatives are generally kept on a varied diet of floating pellets, flake, small insects and occasional finely chopped fruit or vegetable matter, offered at or near the surface where these fish naturally forage.
Mating
No species-specific courtship description for T. albus was found in the cached sources. Reproductive-biology research on Triportheus in Amazonian floodplain lakes documents potamodromous spawning migrations timed to the flood pulse, with related species such as T. trifurcatus spawning between November and January, peaking in December–January during high water. Notably, the same research found that T. albus shows an inverse phenology in parts of the Peruvian Amazon — spawning on a different seasonal schedule than its congeners in that population — which suggests real geographic variation in timing rather than a single fixed spawning window across its range. External sexual dimorphism is not documented in the sources consulted; data sparse.
Breeding
Triportheus albus is not documented as bred in the home aquarium in any of the cached sources, and this article does not assert a breeding mode for it beyond what the research literature shows for the wild population: potamodromous, flood-pulse-timed spawning migrations within river-floodplain systems, with early development described as well-documented in the scientific literature for the genus. The related, more commonly discussed T. angulatus is described in hobby sources as accessible to determined aquarists but requiring real rigor to achieve — consistent with the broader characin pattern in which open-water schooling species can be egg-scatterers in principle but are rarely actually spawned in home tanks.
Given the lack of any aquarium-breeding account for T. albus specifically in the available sources, keepers should treat this species as essentially not bred in captivity at present, with wild-collected and river-fishery-caught stock the realistic source for the trade.
In the aquarium
Triportheus albus is a fast-moving, surface-oriented schooling fish and should be kept as a genuine group rather than singly or in pairs — the related T. angulatus is recommended at 105 US gal minimum for a proper group, and a similarly sized, well-covered tank with open swimming space at the surface is a reasonable baseline for T. albus given its comparable size (up to 10 in TL) and build. A secure, well-fitting lid is essential: the enlarged pectoral fins that let this genus skip across the water surface in the wild make Triportheus notorious jumpers in captivity.
At a maximum size approaching 10 in, this is a mid-sized characin that outgrows small community setups; it is not remotely piranha-like in temperament and poses no threat to tankmates beyond simple size mismatch, but its need for a large footprint and open swimming water means it is best suited to spacious, well-established aquaria rather than typical nano or standard community tanks. As with most wild-caught Amazonian characins, expect some initial shyness and a preference for dim lighting and floating cover until the school settles.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List and FishBase both list Triportheus albus as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across the Amazon and Tocantins-Araguaia basins and its apparent tolerance of a broad range of water conditions, which likely buffers it against localised habitat degradation better than water-chemistry specialists in the same lakes. It is not a targeted aquarium-trade species and does not appear to face any documented population pressure in the sources consulted.
As with other Amazonian floodplain fish, the longer-term watch items are basin-wide: damming of river systems, deforestation-linked sedimentation, and hydrological changes to the flood pulse that governs its migratory spawning behaviour. None of these are flagged as an active threat to T. albus specifically in the current assessment.
