Taxonomy & naming
Triportheus culter was described by the American palaeontologist and naturalist Edward Drinker Cope in 1872, with a type locality on the río Ampiyacu, an Amazon tributary in Peru. It sits in the genus Triportheus within the characin assemblage historically grouped near Triportheidae/Characidae; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination, and the genus currently holds 16 recognised species spread across the Amazon, Orinoco and other major South American drainages.
The scientific literature on the genus (a revision of the neotropical genus Triportheus) records Chalcinus elongatus iquitensis Nakashima, 1941 as a junior synonym of T. culter, one of several names that have been folded into the species over the past century and a half of taxonomic revision. As with many minor characins, older aquarium and hobbyist literature sometimes uses outdated combinations or lumps species together on sight; this account keeps the currently valid name Triportheus culter throughout.
Morphology
Triportheus culter has the diagnostic build of its genus: a laterally compressed, elongated body with a pronounced ventral keel running from the throat back toward the anal fin, an upturned mouth suited to feeding at or near the surface, and a deeply forked tail. FishBase records a maximum length of 9.5 in standard length, a solid mid-sized characin rather than either the tiny tetras or the large food-fish characins found elsewhere in this atlas's "minor characins" grouping.
Colouration is a bright, uniform silver typical of open-water and surface-dwelling Neotropical fish, with little in the way of bold patterning — a practical camouflage against a mirrored water surface when viewed from below, and against a pale sky when viewed from above. Triportheus culter is distributed across the Amazon River basin, where it occupies the open water and surface layers of rivers, floodplain channels and larger tributaries rather than dense marginal vegetation or the substrate. As a surface-oriented shoaler it favours well-oxygenated, moving water with open swimming space above, consistent with the genus's general habit of feeding and travelling near the surface film.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to T. culter was not found in the available sources; related Triportheus species in the aquarium trade are documented in a temperature range of roughly 72–86 °F, and the genus as a whole is associated with the warm, soft-to-neutral conditions typical of Amazonian lowland rivers. Genus-level care guidance is unambiguous on this point: Triportheus are strong, sudden jumpers capable of clearing considerable distances when startled, so a tight-fitting cover is not optional, and isolated individuals kept alone or in cramped quarters become stressed and prone to disease — group maintenance is essential, not a nicety.
Well-oxygenated water with good surface agitation suits the species' natural habit of feeding and cruising near the surface film. At a maximum of 9.5 in SL this is a mid-sized characin that needs real length and width of tank rather than height, and it is a good candidate for a large Amazonian biotope community alongside similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. It is rarely offered in the aquarium trade compared with the well-known tetras and larger serrasalmids covered elsewhere in this atlas, so most keepers who acquire it do so through specialist importers rather than general fish stores.
Conservation
Triportheus culter is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, a status FishBase also reports (as of a November 2020 assessment date), reflecting its wide distribution across the Amazon basin and the absence of any documented range-wide population decline. No specific threats, harvest pressure or habitat-loss data for this species were located in the sources reviewed.
