Taxonomy & naming
Triportheus auritus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850. It belongs to the family Triportheidae — the keeled, hatchet-bodied characins recently split out of the broader Characidae — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Triportheus, a group of roughly 20 valid species distinguished by a deep, laterally compressed body, a sharp ventral keel of modified scales, and greatly enlarged pectoral fins used for gliding leaps at the surface.
A neotype for the species (MZUSP 58859) was designated from the rio Negro at Anavilhanas, Brazil, fixing the name to Amazonian material. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination Triportheus auritus, and this article keeps that name and genus as given. The common name "long sardine" reflects the fish's slim, silvery, sardine-like profile in local fisheries use rather than any close relationship to true sardines. The name Triportheus elongatus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Triportheus auritus has the classic Triportheus silhouette: a narrow, elongated but laterally compressed body with a pronounced ventral keel running from the pelvic region back toward the anal fin, a small upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and pectoral fins that are conspicuously enlarged relative to most characins, extending well back along the body. FishBase records a maximum size of 10.5 in standard length, making this one of the larger "minor characins" in the group rather than a tetra-sized fish — a fact worth stating plainly, since the genus is easy to underestimate on sight.
Colouration is a simple, functional silver: bright, reflective flanks that flash in open water, a darker olive-to-silver back, and pale, translucent-to-hyaline fins typical of open-water and surface-dwelling Neotropical characins. The oversized pectorals and keeled belly are the two features that most reliably separate Triportheus species from superficially similar hemiodontids and small characids sharing the same waters.
Habitat
The species has a broad native range across northern South America, recorded from the Amazon basin, the Tocantins-Araguaia system, the Orinoco basin, coastal drainages from the Essequibo River in Guyana to the rio Araguari in Brazil, and associated floodplain habitats in between. It is a benthopelagic fish, occupying the water column from mid-depth to the surface rather than hugging the bottom, and it is recorded across blackwater, clearwater and whitewater river types, indicating real tolerance for the varied water chemistry found across that huge range.
Across such a wide distribution spanning multiple river systems and water colours, no single narrow temperature or pH window applies; the species is best understood as an adaptable, wide-ranging Amazonian and Orinocan river and floodplain fish rather than a chemistry specialist tied to one type of water.
Feeding
Triportheus auritus is an omnivore with a diet skewed toward the water's surface and margins: fruit, seeds, leaves and other plant material that fall from flooded forest and riverside vegetation make up a substantial part of the diet, supplemented by invertebrates such as insects and spiders, and occasionally small fish. This surface-and-margin foraging strategy fits the fish's upturned mouth and its habit of gliding or skittering across the surface on its enlarged pectorals.
As an opportunistic feeder tracking seasonal allochthonous food falls — fruit and seed drop tied to the flood pulse — it plays a role typical of many Amazonian floodplain fishes in moving plant-derived nutrients and, potentially, seeds through the system. In the aquarium
Triportheus auritus is not a meaningfully documented aquarium fish — there is no hobby care literature, no established import trade, and no breeding reports in captivity. What can be said with confidence comes from its biology: at up to 10.5 in standard length this is a large, fast, open-water shoaling characin, not a nano or community-tank fish, and any attempt to keep it would require a very large, long aquarium with excellent water movement and a secure, gap-free cover, since surface-oriented, pectoral-gliding characins are prone to jumping when startled.
Prospective keepers should treat this as an essentially undomesticated wild fish: expect it to need generous swimming space, a shoal rather than a single specimen given its riverine, schooling relatives in the genus, and a varied omnivorous diet including some plant matter and fruit-derived foods alongside standard fare. Given the total absence of hobby data, anyone acquiring this species should treat husbandry as experimental and prioritise space and water quality over any specific published protocol, because none exists.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Triportheus auritus as Least Concern on 30 November 2020, reflecting its very wide distribution across the Amazon, Tocantins-Araguaia, Orinoco and Guiana coastal drainages and the absence of evidence for range-wide population decline. It is not a species of conservation concern at present.
As with other wide-ranging Amazonian and Orinocan fishes, the broader long-term pressures on its habitat — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation, and water-quality change across its river systems — are relevant background even though the species itself is not currently threatened and carries no special protective status.
