Taxonomy & naming
Triportheus pantanensis was formally described by Luiz R. Malabarba in 2004 in Neotropical Ichthyology, as part of a comprehensive revision of the genus Triportheus. The genus sits within the family historically treated as Triportheidae (and, in earlier and some current classifications, folded into Characidae or placed near Serrasalmidae as part of the broader characiform reshuffling); the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) governs the currently accepted placement and should be consulted for the up-to-date family assignment. Whatever the family-level bookkeeping, Triportheus itself is a well-defined, distinctive genus of laterally compressed, keel-bellied characins sometimes called hatchet-tetras or hatchetfish characins, unrelated to the true piranhas (Pygocentrus, Serrasalmus) and to the pacus (Colossoma, Piaractus) that share the older, broader Serrasalmidae umbrella.
The species epithet "pantanensis" refers directly to the Pantanal de Mato Grosso, the vast seasonal wetland in west-central Brazil where the species commonly occurs and from which its holotype was collected, from a pond in Mato Grosso state. As with much of the Triportheus revision, T. pantanensis was split out from what had previously been lumped under other, more widely distributed Triportheus names, so older aquarium and fisheries literature predating 2004 may not distinguish it from related Paraná-Paraguay basin congeners.
Morphology
Triportheus pantanensis shows the genus's signature build: a strongly laterally compressed, silvery body with a pronounced ventral keel of enlarged scales running from roughly the pectoral region back toward the anal fin, functionally similar in shape (though not in relation) to the keel of a true hatchetfish. FishBase records a maximum size of 6 in standard length for the species, and other Triportheus in the genus are reported to reach a broadly similar 6–10 in range, so this is a small-to-modest characin, not a large-growing one.
A documented and distinctive feature of the species is ontogenetic change in the caudal fin: small individuals under about 2 in SL have a simple, bifurcated (forked) tail without elongated rays, while adults develop an emarginated caudal fin with elongated medial rays, giving mature fish a more ornate tail shape than juveniles. Colouration follows the typical Triportheus pattern of a bright silver body that flashes strongly in open water, with the keel scales often catching the light distinctly from the flanks above.
Habitat
The species is a South American endemic restricted to the Rio Paraguay and lower Rio Paraná basins, with its core range centred on the Pantanal de Mato Grosso in Brazil and extending into neighbouring Paraguay and Argentina. It is a benthopelagic to surface-oriented fish of floodplain rivers and their associated oxbow lakes, favouring the seasonally flooded channels and backwaters that define the Pantanal's hydrology rather than fast, open river channel.

Like most surface-oriented characins with a jumping, insect-snatching lifestyle, a secure, tight-fitting lid is a sensible precaution, and a spacious tank with strong water movement and open swimming lanes will suit its build far better than a densely planted, slow-flow aquascape.
Diet in captivity is straightforward given its natural omnivory — standard flake, pellet and frozen foods are all accepted — but keepers should bear in mind that larger individuals may see small tankmates as prey, so stocking should favour similarly sized, robust community fish rather than tiny nano species. There is no conservation or legal restriction analogous to the true piranhas' permit requirements for this species; it is simply an under-documented characin in the trade, and prospective keepers should expect to rely on general Triportheus husbandry experience rather than species-specific care guides.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Triportheus pantanensis as Least Concern, with an assessment dated 30 November 2020; the species is classified as a full migrant with an unknown population trend. FishBase's own vulnerability index places it at a low 10 out of 100, consistent with a small-bodied, fast-reproducing, non-targeted species that faces limited direct fishing pressure.
As a Pantanal and lower Paraguay-Paraná endemic, the species' longer-term outlook is tied to the health of that floodplain system — a wetland increasingly affected by upstream damming, agricultural expansion and periodic severe wildfires in the surrounding Pantanal biome — even though the species itself is not currently classified as threatened. It is not a significant presence in the aquarium trade, so wild collection pressure specifically for the hobby is not a documented concern for this species.
