The redflank bloodfin, Aphyocharax rathbuni, is a slender, active characid from the Rio Paraguay basin of South America — a schooling micro-predator that packs considerable flash into a body barely 2 in long in most aquarium specimens. A close relative of the bloodfin tetra (Aphyocharax anisitsi), it shares the same energetic temperament and tolerance for cooler temperatures, making it one of the hardier small tetras available to the hobby. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2021, reflecting a stable and widespread population across Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyocharax rathbuni was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907, in a joint publication with Ogle cataloguing characin fishes in the United States National Museum and the Museum of Indiana. The species is placed in the genus Aphyocharax Günther, 1868, a group of small, schooling characids distributed across lowland South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; the author is cited without parentheses because the species was originally described in its current genus.

The genus Aphyocharax belongs to the family Characidae in its broad sense, a vast assemblage of New World and African characiform fishes. Within Aphyocharax, A. rathbuni is allied to the familiar bloodfin tetras and shares their elongate body form, active schooling behaviour, and tolerance for a wide thermal range. In hobbyist literature the species is sometimes listed as the green fire tetra, a name that references the greenish metallic sheen of the flanks rather than any red coloration, though males do develop white tips on the dorsal and anal fins that recall the classic bloodfin pattern.

Morphology

Aphyocharax rathbuni reaches a recorded maximum of 3 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase, though most aquarium-kept individuals measure 1.5–2 in. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, typical of the genus — streamlined for a life of continuous, open-water schooling. The dorsal profile is slightly arched; the caudal peduncle is narrow and leads to a well-forked tail.

The flanks carry a greenish or bluish-silver metallic sheen that shifts with the angle of light, lending the fish the 'green fire' nickname. A faint lateral stripe may be visible in certain lighting. Sexual dimorphism is modest: males are slimmer and display white or pale tips on the dorsal and anal fins, a feature shared with several Aphyocharax species. Females become noticeably fuller in the body when gravid. Colour and sheen intensity are influenced by diet, water quality, and stress — well-maintained fish in a large school show the iridescence to best effect.

Habitat

Aphyocharax rathbuni is native to the Rio Paraguay basin and extends into the middle Rio Paraná and upper Rio Madeira systems, with range states including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. The IUCN assessment characterises its habitat as floodplain lakes and lagoons — shallow, vegetated still and slow-moving waters that undergo dramatic seasonal fluctuations in level and extent across the South American lowland interior.

FishBase records water parameters from the native range as pH 6.0–7.5, maximum hardness around 20 dH, and temperature 68–79 °F. The relatively cool lower end of this range reflects the subtropical latitude of much of the Paraguay basin, and it is one reason the species tolerates temperatures that would stress more equatorial tetras. In the wild, schooling groups likely occupy open water above the vegetated shallows, feeding on small invertebrates drifting in the current or at the surface.

Feeding

Aphyocharax rathbuni is an omnivorous micro-predator in the wild, taking small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and surface-drifting prey items. Its upturned mouth is adapted to feeding at or near the water surface, and schools in nature are frequently observed snapping at items entering the water from riparian vegetation.

In the aquarium it is unfussy and accepts a wide variety of foods: quality flake or micro-pellets form a practical base diet, supplemented with live and frozen items such as brine shrimp, Daphnia, and bloodworm. Small live or frozen foods improve condition and bring fish into breeding colour. Because it is a constant, active feeder, small amounts offered multiple times daily suit it better than a single large feeding.

Mating

Aphyocharax rathbuni is an egg-scattering species that spawns in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation with no subsequent parental care. Males in spawning condition display to females by spreading fins and intensifying the pale fin-tip markings; the slimmer body shape of the male is most easily distinguished when a group of conditioned adults is observed side by side.

Spawning drives are most reliably triggered by a temperature rise of a few degrees within the natural range, combined with good feeding and a dimly lit tank environment. A receptive female and a courting male swim together in tight circles before releasing eggs and milt in a brief, energetic embrace among plant fronds or over a spawning mop — the same basic choreography seen across the bloodfin group.

Breeding

Breeding Aphyocharax rathbuni in captivity follows the standard bloodfin protocol. A separate spawning tank of 10–15 US gal, well-planted with fine-leaved species such as Java moss or fitted with synthetic spawning mops, is preferable to attempting to raise fry in the community tank. Gentle filtration through a sponge filter prevents fry losses and keeps the water clean without strong flow.

Aqua-Fish.Net reports that eggs hatch within 2–3 days at spawning temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming after a further 5–6 days. Adults show no parental interest and will consume eggs on sight, so they should be removed promptly once spawning is complete. The tiny fry require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and powdered flake. The species is reasonably productive and not difficult to breed once a compatible pair or group is established.

In the aquarium

Aphyocharax rathbuni is a peaceful, active schooling fish well suited to a community aquarium of small, calm inhabitants. A minimum group of 6–8 individuals is recommended to allow natural schooling behaviour and to reduce individual stress; larger groups of 10 or more are noticeably more settled and display better. The species is compatible with other peaceful small tetras, corydoras, rasboras, and similarly sized peaceful fish that will not outcompete it at feeding time.

Water conditions should target the native range parameters: temperature 68–79 °F (68–79 °F), pH 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water up to around 20 dH. The tolerance for the cooler end of this range makes the species suitable for subtropical or cool-tropical setups that suit livebearers and some corydoras. A well-planted tank with open midwater swimming space and gentle to moderate flow replicates the species' floodplain lagoon habitat. Lifespan in captivity is reported as 3–6 years, occasionally reaching 7; the species is robust once established and not prone to disease under stable, clean conditions.

Conservation

Aphyocharax rathbuni is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2021). The assessment notes a stable population, wide distribution across the central South American lowlands — Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay — and no known threats of sufficient scale to drive significant decline. The species is reported as common across its range and is noted as very popular in the international aquarium trade, which reflects both its abundance and its ease of captive propagation.

Because the species reproduces readily in captivity, the aquarium trade is largely supplied by farmed stock rather than wild-caught individuals, reducing collecting pressure on natural populations. The broad, river-connected floodplain habitat of the Rio Paraguay system — while subject to seasonal hydrological fluctuation and some land-use change — does not represent the kind of narrow endemic situation that elevates threat levels for more restricted species. No special conservation measures are currently indicated.
