Taxonomy & naming
Joachim Knaack described Ancistrus claro in 1999 in Tropical Fish Hobbyist (volume 47, number 10, p. 71, Figs. 1–3 plus unnumbered), basing the description on a holotype deposited as MCP 28667 (ex ZMB 32918, the Berlin Zoological Museum), with paratypes MCP 28668 (9 specimens). The type locality is given as the Rio Claro, above the bridge in the direction of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) confirms the valid name as Ancistrus claro Knaack 1999, with no synonyms, placing it in Loricariidae: Hypostominae and restricting the distribution to the Cuiabá River basin in the upper Paraguay River drainage, Brazil.
The species had circulated in German aquarium imports from 1993 before its formal description, receiving the 'Das Aquarium' LDA-number LDA08 (sometimes written LDA008). There are no synonyms. Subsequent literature — including Isbrücker (2001, 2002), Fisch-Muller in Reis et al. (2003), Ferraris (2007), and de Oliveira et al. (2015) — all confirm its validity. PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog places it in Hypostominae within the large genus Ancistrus (tribe Ancistrini).
Morphology
Ancistrus claro is a small bristlenose, with FishBase and Fisch-Muller (2003) recording a maximum of 2.5 in SL; ScotCat and Catfish Codex note up to 3 in total length in the largest individuals. The body is stocky and dorsoventrally flattened, armoured with the overlapping keeled scutes characteristic of all Loricariidae.
The diagnostic feature of the genus — and the source of the name bristlenose — is the interopercular odontodes that develop as soft, branching tentacles on the snout of mature males. In A. claro, as with all Ancistrus, males carry an elaborate crown of these tentacles. Females develop smaller bristles at the snout margin only, never approaching the full male head-dress.
Colouration in males is base brown with gold-yellow marble reticulations — a worm-like vermiculated pattern — throughout the head and body. Females are darker, tending more to a spotted pattern. Both sexes carry banding on the caudal, dorsal, and pectoral fins, and the ventral surface is pale. The gold marbling in males is distinctly variable: ScotCat notes that A. claro 'seems to take colouration from its surroundings', shifting appreciably depending on whether the fish is resting on rock, wood, or substrate — a quality one author described as making 'chameleon bristlenose' a more apt common name than the standard 'gold marble' moniker.
Habitat
The Rio Claro is a tributary of the Rio Coxipó, itself draining into the Rio Cuiabá, which flows into the upper Rio Paraguay — placing A. claro firmly within the Paraguay basin rather than the Amazon. The type locality is the Rio Claro above the bridge towards Chapada dos Guimarães, a plateau region in Mato Grosso state known for its dramatic sandstone formations and clear, oxygen-rich waterfalls and rivers.
ScotCat's factsheet notes that the species has also been collected in the Coxipó River and other western tributaries in the region. PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog records conductivity at the type locality as 3–10 microsiemens — extremely soft, almost ion-free water typical of clearwater highland streams. Temperature in the area ranges broadly: the Mato Grosso plateau experiences pronounced seasonality, and field reports suggest the fish tolerate seasonal variation from around 72 °F in cool dry season months up to 82 °F or beyond in the wet summer. ScotCat and PlanetCatfish both record 75–82 °F as the primary range; however, Catfish Codex notes that the species does 'not need the warm water required by many other L-numbers', suggesting it is comfortable at the cooler end of this range.
Microhabitat is rocky substrate in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water. ScotCat states that the fish 'reside in fast flowing waters with little vegetation among and under rocks', and hobbyists confirm that wild-caught specimens favour hard substrate and active current.
Feeding
Like most Ancistrus species, A. claro is predominantly herbivorous and biofilm-grazing, with an omnivorous tendency toward fine organic material. The ventrally positioned sucker-mouth is lined with rows of bicuspid teeth adapted for rasping aufwuchs from rocks and submerged wood. In nature the fish graze the algal films and associated micro-invertebrates from the fast-current rocky surfaces of the Rio Claro and its tributaries.
PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog recommends feeding primarily on vegetarian prepared foods — algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking food are ideal staples — supplemented with fresh vegetables such as courgette (zucchini) and English cucumber. ScotCat's factsheet notes that the species will eat most flake and worm foods and shows a particular fondness for algae discs, but is 'not as keen' on courgette as more common Ancistrus species — a minor idiosyncrasy worth noting. Small amounts of meatier foods (bloodworm, Daphnia) can be offered for conditioning prior to breeding. Protein-heavy feeding long-term is inadvisable.
Mating
Courtship follows the standard Ancistrus pattern. Males in breeding condition become territorial around a preferred cave site, displaying their elaborate head tentacles and interopercular odontodes. Males may engage in brief chasing or push-and-lock contests at territory boundaries, but serious injury is uncommon where adequate hiding places are provided.
Females approaching breeding condition display visible broadening of the mid-body and a swollen ventral papilla. The male courts actively, retreating into the chosen cave and emerging to guide or nudge the female toward the entrance. PlanetCatfish records ten aquarium breeding reports for the species, and ScotCat describes spawning in neutral to mildly alkaline water in caves or pipes. Males can be maintained with multiple females in a sufficiently furnished tank; two males in a small aquarium will fight over territory.
Breeding
Ancistrus claro is a prolific cave-spawner with paternal brood care, as are all members of the genus. The male selects a cave, pipe, or narrow crevice — PVC tubes, ceramic breeding caves, or hollowed driftwood pieces all work well — and defends it vigorously during spawning and incubation. After the female deposits eggs, the male remains inside, fanning the clutch to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile or fungused eggs.
ScotCat reports egg colour as yellow, large, and numbering about 40 in a good spawning — a clutch size consistent with the species' small body size relative to other Ancistrus. PlanetCatfish documents eight-day-old fry at an early free-swimming stage, with three-day-old and seven-day-old fry clearly visible in photo documentation on the Cat-eLog page. The holotype's Berlin Zoological Museum repository (ZMB 32918, later transferred to MCP 28668) confirms the original collection context.
Conditioning is straightforward: a varied diet, weekly water changes of 25–30%, and slightly cooler water followed by a temperature increase of 34–36 °F can trigger spawning. The species breeds reliably in captivity; Catfish Codex notes that most specimens in the hobby are captive-bred, as the collection area is not heavily exploited commercially.
In the aquarium
At under 3 in SL, Ancistrus claro is among the smallest available Ancistrus species and fits into tanks of 10–15 US gal for a pair, though 20–25 US gal provides more comfortable territory and filtration buffer for a colony of three to six. Its small size makes it compatible with nano-community fish — small rasboras, tetras, danios — that would be uncomfortably small tankmates for larger Loricariidae.
Water should ideally be soft and clean, reflecting the ultra-low conductivity of the Rio Claro's highland headwaters: pH 6.2–7.5, temperature 72–82 °F (cooler end preferred in many accounts), hardness 1–10 dH preferred. The species tolerates harder tap water better than some clearwater specialists, but long-term soft water conditions yield better colouration and apparent health. PlanetCatfish notes a conductivity range of 3–10 µS at the type locality.
Good current and high dissolved oxygen are important — the fish originate from aerated fast-water rocky streams. A powerhead or spray bar directed along the tank surface, combined with an efficient filter producing modest current, is ideal. Multiple caves and flat stones are essential. The species is often observed during daylight, clamped to tank walls or flat stonework (ScotCat), which distinguishes it from strictly nocturnal loricariids.
Compatibility is excellent: non-aggressive toward other species and safe with shrimp in a well-structured tank. Males may skirmish over caves but rarely inflict serious injury.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus claro as Least Concern in 2018 (FishBase / PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog); the ScotCat factsheet (updated 2022) also cites the most recent Red List assessment as Least Concern, noting that the species 'is distributed in the Claro River basin, a tributary of the Cuiabá River, in the Paraguay River basin, in Brazil, where it is abundant and frequent' and that 'no significant threats to its population have been identified' (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation / ICMBio 2022).
The Rio Claro drainage lies within the Mato Grosso portion of the Brazilian Cerrado and Pantanal transition zone — a region experiencing substantial agricultural expansion, particularly soy cultivation and cattle ranching, which drive deforestation, sedimentation, and water-quality degradation. The extremely soft, clear water the species inhabits is sensitive to run-off. At present the species is abundant locally and captive-bred stocks are well established in European and Brazilian hobbyist circles, reducing extraction pressure. Continued monitoring of water quality in the Rio Claro and Coxipó tributaries is warranted given land-use change in the Mato Grosso plateau.
