A compact bristlenose catfish endemic to the upper Parnaíba drainage of northeastern Brazil, Ancistrus damasceni represents the eastern margin of the genus's range — a position that makes it both biogeographically distinctive and poorly known in the aquarium trade. It is rarely imported, and what is known of it comes chiefly from the original description and the handful of specimens collected from the seasonally variable, cerrado-to-caatinga rivers of Piauí state.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus damasceni was described by Franz Steindachner in 1907, with the original diagnosis appearing in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Klasse (volume 44, number 17, p. 292). The type locality is the Rio Parnaíba near the towns of Victoria and Filomena (modern-day Santa Filomena), in what is now southwestern Piauí state, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Ancistrus damasceni; the original combination was Xenocara damasceni, the genus Xenocara being a synonym of Ancistrus. A Portuguese translation of the original description was provided by Miranda-Ribeiro (1911, p. 30).

The eponymy of the specific epithet traces to Colonel José Damasceno Nogueira, who served as Steindachner's host in the town of Filomeno during the 1903 collecting expedition from which the holotype was acquired (Eponym Dictionary of Fishes, Whittles Publishing). FishBase notes there is no recent revisionary work on this species.

Within Loricariidae, A. damasceni is placed in subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini, alongside the more than 80 other currently recognised Ancistrus species. Armbruster (2004) placed Ancistrus as one of the largest ancistrinine genera, characterised by the hooked interopercular odontodes that give the tribe its name. The Parnaíba drainage is an isolated coastal basin draining northeast Brazil, and this species is considered possibly endemic to the Maranhão-Piauí freshwater ecoregion (IUCN assessment, ICMBio 2018).

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 2.5 in standard length (SL) according to the Checklist of Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (Fisch-Muller 2003), placing A. damasceni among the smaller bristlenoses. The overall body plan is typical of the genus: dorsoventrally flattened, covered in overlapping bony scutes, and equipped with a ventral suckermouth bearing multiple rows of bicuspid teeth suited for grazing.

The most distinctive feature of the genus — and the primary way to identify an Ancistrus in the field — is the array of fleshy tentacles (cirri) on the head and snout of mature males. In A. damasceni, breeding males develop prominent soft tentacles on the rostral plate and along the snout margin; females may have small tentacles along the snout edge only. The interopercular odontodes are evertible and hook-shaped, a defining Ancistrus character used in defence and male-male competition.

Coloration is the typical mottled dark brown to grey found across many bristlenoses, with small pale spots scattered across the body and fins. Photographs from the Cachoeira da Campeira (Campeira Waterfall) locality in Piauí show a stocky fish with a broad, depressed head. Detailed meristic counts and morphometric measurements specific to A. damasceni have not been published in any post-1911 revision, so fine-scale diagnostic characters beyond the generic ones are not reliably on record.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the upper Parnaíba River basin, primarily in Piauí state, Brazil. The Parnaíba is one of Brazil's major northeastern rivers, rising in the high Cerrado tablelands of western Piauí and Maranhão before descending through transitional Cerrado-Caatinga vegetation to reach the Atlantic. The upper reaches where A. damasceni is found are characterised by clear to moderately turbid water, with seasonal variation driven by strongly marked wet and dry seasons typical of the semi-arid northeast.

The IUCN notes that the type locality spans the towns of Vitória do Alto Parnaíba and Santa Filomena. Photographs on PlanetCatfish document specimens from the Cachoeira da Campeira (Campeira Waterfall) in Piauí, suggesting the fish inhabits rocky stream reaches and waterfall zones as well as slower sections with hard substrate — a pattern consistent with other Ancistrus in seasonally variable rivers. FishBase records this species as facultative or obligate air-breathing, an adaptation that may assist survival during low-water periods when dissolved oxygen in isolated pools drops. No specific water-chemistry measurements are on record for wild populations.

Feeding

Like all Ancistrus, A. damasceni is a periphyton grazer, using its ventral suckermouth and fine bicuspid teeth to rasp attached algae and biofilm from hard surfaces — rocks, woody debris, and submerged roots. The mouthpart anatomy is well suited to this scraping mode, with the oral disc acting as an adhesive holdfast and the jaws providing the rasping action.

No published gut-content analysis exists for this species. By analogy with better-studied congeners such as A. cirrhosus, A. temminckii, and the aquarium-familiar A. cf. cirrhosus (commonly sold as 'common bristlenose'), the diet is primarily algae, diatoms, and detrital organic matter, supplemented opportunistically with small invertebrates and organic particles in the biofilm.

In captivity, the standard Ancistrus diet applies: algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, sweet potato, and leafy greens. Small, high-protein foods can be offered occasionally but should not dominate the diet.

Mating

No specific courtship observations have been published for A. damasceni. Its breeding behaviour is expected to follow the genus-wide pattern, well documented in captive Ancistrus: males establish and defend cavities — crevices between rocks, hollow sections of sunken wood, or equivalent refuges — and entice females to deposit eggs inside. The development of elaborate tentacles in males appears to function partly as an inter-male signal and partly in female mate-choice, though the precise roles remain debated.

Sexual dimorphism provides the practical cue for breeding pairs: mature males carry the characteristic fan of tentacles from the rostral disc, while females show tentacles only at the snout rim. Gravid females are noticeably wider across the body when viewed from above. Conditioning involves varied, nutrition-dense foods and regular partial water changes to simulate onset of the wet season, which appears to be a spawning trigger in riverine bristlenoses.

Breeding

Ancistrus damasceni has no published breeding reports (PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog records none), and no captive breeding has been documented in the literature. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus, the species is expected to be a cave-spawner with paternal brood care: the male guards the clutch in a confined space, fans the eggs continuously to maintain oxygenation, and tends the fry until they disperse.

In related species, clutch sizes range from a few dozen to over 100 eggs, with pale to amber adhesive eggs deposited on the inner surfaces of the chosen cavity. Incubation typically takes 5–7 days at tropical temperatures. Fry are brooded by the male for the first few days, then begin grazing independently. Given how rarely A. damasceni appears in the trade, captive spawning would itself constitute a notable hobbyist contribution to knowledge of this species.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus damasceni is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade outside Brazil and does not appear in regular commercial imports. It carries no registered L- or LDA-number. Hobbyists who encounter it are likely to have obtained it through specialist collectors or field-collected Brazilian stock.

Care requirements, where they can be inferred from the species' origin, should mirror those of other small Ancistrus from seasonally variable South American rivers: temperature 72–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness, and good water movement with regular partial water changes. The species' reported facultative air-breathing capacity suggests some tolerance of temporarily reduced oxygen, but this should not be taken as an excuse to neglect water quality.

Tank size requirements are modest given the small adult size (under 3 in SL). A single individual can be maintained comfortably in 15 US gal; for a small group, 25–30 US gal with multiple caves, rock piles, and driftwood tangles would allow natural territorial spacing. Diet should be primarily algae-based, supplemented with vegetables. Because so little is known of this species in the hobby, keepers who succeed in observing spawning behaviour or breeding would be contributing genuinely useful observations to the body of knowledge.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus damasceni as Least Concern in 2018 (published 2022), assessed by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The justification notes that the species appears to be frequent though not abundant within its range, and no significant threats to its population were identified at the time of assessment.

The range is likely restricted to the upper Parnaíba basin, possibly endemic to the Maranhão-Piauí freshwater ecoregion. This is a region of Brazil facing ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion — the Cerrado headwaters of the Parnaíba have experienced substantial soy and grain farming activity, bringing risks of increased sedimentation and altered hydrology. The caatinga stretches downstream present a different set of water-scarcity pressures. No specific conservation programmes target this species, and the IUCN assessment identifies no current management actions. Continued monitoring and documentation of distribution would be valuable given the species' narrow endemic range.
