Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus erinaceus was described by Valenciennes in 1840 in the Histoire naturelle des Poissons (volume 15, p. 510), under the original combination Hypostomus erinaceus. The species was transferred to Ancistrus by Isbrücker (1980) in his Classification and Catalogue of the Mailed Loricariidae (Verslagen en Technische Gegevens, Instituut voor Taxonomische Zoölogie, No. 22, p. 68), establishing the current valid combination. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Ancistrus erinaceus (Valenciennes, 1840) as valid, with Hypostomus erinaceus as its junior synonym in the original combination.
The species is assigned to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae (Loricariidae). It is listed in Reis et al. (2003) Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (p. 375) and in Ferraris (2007) Checklist of Catfishes in Zootaxa 1418 (p. 221).
A critical taxonomic caveat must be stated: only the holotype is known, and it survives in very poor condition. FishBase explicitly notes that 'no other report of Ancistrus from Chile' exists and that 'type locality doubtful.' No loricariid catfish are native to Chile, and no Ancistrus are recorded from Chilean waters by any source. The specimen may have been mislabelled at collection, misattributed during transit to the Paris museum, or represent an early geographic error. Without additional material from a verified locality, the true origin of this species cannot be established.
Morphology
The maximum recorded standard length is 3 in SL (approximately 3 inches); total length is approximately 4 in per the Suedamerikafans (Welsfans) database. This places A. erinaceus within the typical small-to-medium size range of the genus Ancistrus.
Fin ray counts from the Welsfans database: dorsal fin I/7 rays; anal fin 3 soft rays; caudal fin 13 soft rays; pectoral fin 5 soft rays; pelvic fin 5 soft rays. These meristic data derive from the holotype or early type-series examination.
The most diagnostic character of Ancistrus in general — and one that distinguishes the genus from Hypostomus — is the presence of bushy, branched tentacles (soft odontodes) on the snout in males. Females may bear shorter tentacles or stubs along the margins of the snout. This feature reflects the genus-wide pattern rather than a specific observation of A. erinaceus in life, given that only the deteriorated holotype is known; however, the assignment to Ancistrus by Isbrücker carries this morphological implication. The body is covered with the loricariid armour of bony scutes, and the mouth is positioned ventrally for scraping.
Because the holotype is in very poor condition and no additional specimens have been collected, a full morphological account of this species is not possible.
Habitat
The type locality of Ancistrus erinaceus is recorded as Chile. This locality is almost certainly doubtful. No loricariid catfishes are native to Chile, and no Ancistrus — nor indeed any member of Loricariidae — have been documented from Chilean waters by subsequent ichthyological surveys. FishBase explicitly flags the Chilean type locality as doubtful, and the Welsfans database states that 'exact location unknown, Chile doubtful, since no further Ancistrus are known from there.'
The Loricariidae family is distributed across tropical and subtropical South America, with the greatest diversity in the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná basins. The genus Ancistrus is broadly distributed across this range, found in streams and rivers from Venezuela and Colombia south through Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. It is plausible that the holotype originated from somewhere within this range and was mislabelled before reaching the Paris museum, but no data exist to pinpoint a more likely locality.
Because the true provenance of the species is unknown, nothing reliable can be said about its specific habitat preferences, water chemistry tolerances, or altitudinal range. General Ancistrus ecology — shallow, often fast-flowing, oxygenated streams and rivers with rocky or woody substrates — provides a broad inferential framework, but applying it to A. erinaceus specifically is speculative.
Feeding
No wild feeding data exist for Ancistrus erinaceus, and the species has no confirmed aquarium history from which captive observations could be drawn. By genus-level inference, Ancistrus are predominantly vegetarian scrapers: they use their suctorial mouth and fine teeth to rasp algae, biofilm, and soft plant material from hard surfaces, and in the aquarium they readily consume algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables, and occasional small meaty foods.
PlanetCatfish notes the genus as 'mainly vegetarian — algae wafers, spirulina, zucchini/courgette; occasional meaty foods,' a characterisation drawn from the better-known domesticated bristlenose species (particularly Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus and its cultivated forms). Whether A. erinaceus — if ever live specimens are located — conforms fully to this profile cannot be confirmed from available data.
Mating
No mating observations exist for Ancistrus erinaceus. The genus is well-studied through captive breeding of other species and is known for pronounced sexual dimorphism in snout tentacle development: mature males bear elaborate, branched soft tentacles across the snout and around the interopercular region, while females typically have shorter tentacles or stubs confined to the snout margin. These structures are used in male display and territorial competition.
Male Ancistrus are cave-territorial and defend spawning sites against rival males. Females select a mate and enter the defended cavity for spawning. Given the absence of any confirmed specimen of A. erinaceus beyond the degraded holotype, none of this can be stated as species-specific observation — it is genus-level context only.
Breeding
No breeding record exists for Ancistrus erinaceus. The species is not known in the aquarium trade and no captive specimens have been registered on PlanetCatfish. The Welsfans database lists breeding status as unknown/unrecorded.
Ancistrus in general are cave spawners with strong paternal brood care: the male remains with the adhesive egg clutch, fanning it continuously with his fins, removing infertile or fungused eggs, and guarding the fry after hatching. This pattern is consistent across the genus in captivity. Its applicability to A. erinaceus remains entirely untested.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus erinaceus is not available in the aquarium trade. No living specimens have been collected since the original holotype, and the holotype itself is in poor condition. The species cannot currently be recommended or described as a candidate for aquarium keeping.
If live specimens were discovered and identified, the husbandry template for the genus would serve as a starting point: a tank of at least 23.5 in length (the Welsfans minimum recommendation), clean and well-oxygenated water with a vegetarian-dominated diet, rockwork or ceramic caves for shelter, and separation of males to reduce territorial conflict. Ancistrus generally tolerate a range of tropical water parameters, though provenance-matched conditions would be preferable — which in this case cannot be determined.
The IUCN has not evaluated this species (Not Evaluated), reflecting the near-total absence of biological data.
Conservation
Ancistrus erinaceus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The species is known only from a single degraded holotype with a doubtful type locality. It has not been re-collected since its original description in 1840, a gap of more than 180 years.
Whether this reflects genuine rarity, misidentification in the original material, or simply a lack of targeted collecting in the correct location is impossible to determine. If the holotype truly represents a valid, distinct species with a real but unknown South American provenance, it may be extremely localised or even extinct. Until additional specimens are collected and a reliable locality confirmed, any conservation assessment is premature. The species is not commercially exploited.
