Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus falconensis was formally described by Taphorn, Armbruster and Rodríguez-Olarte in 2010 in Zootaxa (volume 2345, pages 19–32), from specimens collected at El Hueque River, Falcón State, Venezuela. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name as Ancistrus falconensis Taphorn, Armbruster & Rodríguez-Olarte, 2010. No synonyms are recorded.
The genus Ancistrus (Kner, 1854) is one of the largest and most species-rich genera in Loricariidae, currently encompassing more than 70 valid species across South America and Panama, all placed within the subfamily Hypostominae and tribe Ancistrini. The genus is diagnosed principally by the distinctive paired or single tentacles on the snout of adult males — an unusual trait within Loricariidae and the source of the popular name 'bristlenose'. Females of many species develop small rostral tentacles as well, but these remain shorter and less branched than in males.
A. falconensis is distinguished from its Venezuelan congeners by a combination of morphological characters detailed in the original description; the specific characters were examined from holotype and paratype material collected at the type locality. No subspecies or provisional trade codes (L-numbers) have been assigned.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3.5 in SL for A. falconensis. A note of caution is warranted: PlanetCatfish cites 6.5 in SL (6.5 in) for the largest known individual, which would make this one of the larger Ancistrus species; the discrepancy may reflect different measurement bases or specimen series, but FishBase's 3.5 in figure is used here as the conservative published value.
The body plan is typical of the genus: dorsoventrally flattened, covered in interlocking bony plates, with a broad, ventrally positioned suctorial mouth. Ground colour and pattern details for the live fish are not well documented in available literature; the original description focuses on morphometric and meristic characters from preserved material.
As with all Ancistrus, adult males bear conspicuous branched tentacles (odontode-bearing fleshy projections) arising from the snout and rostral plate. These tentacles are notably developed in sexually mature males and function in male–male competition and possibly female choice. Females typically develop short, unbranched or minimally branched rostral projections that remain much reduced compared to males. The interopercular region also bears stout odontodes in males during reproductive condition.
Habitat
The type locality is El Hueque River, Falcón State, Venezuela (approximately 11°09'41.4"N, 69°33'24.9"W), at a bridge on the highway between Churuguara and Coro. The species is recorded from both the Hueque and Ricoa rivers — small Caribbean coastal drainages in Falcón State that flow independently into the Caribbean Sea rather than joining the Orinoco system. This makes A. falconensis a member of a biogeographically distinct coastal ichthyofauna separate from the bulk of Venezuelan Ancistrus diversity.
FishBase places the species in tropical freshwaters between approximately 6°N–1°N and 68°W–58°W, in a demersal habitat. No specific water-chemistry measurements (temperature, pH, conductivity) are on record for the collection sites. The Caribbean coastal streams of Falcón State are generally short, steep, and seasonally variable — subject to drought in the dry season and flash flooding during the wet season. Substrate at the type locality is likely rocky or mixed rock-gravel, as is typical for fast-flowing highland coastal streams in Venezuela.
Feeding
No published feeding data are available specifically for A. falconensis. Based on general Ancistrus biology, the species is expected to be primarily a periphyton and biofilm grazer — using its suctorial mouth and fine comb-like teeth to rasp algae, diatoms, and associated organic matter from hard substrates including rocks, wood, and leaf litter.
In the aquarium, Ancistrus species are reliably maintained on a diet of high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach, sweet potato). Driftwood is beneficial both as a feeding substrate and as a source of structural shelter, though Ancistrus are not obligate xylophages in the manner of Panaqolus or Panaque. Small amounts of protein-rich food (bloodworm, daphnia) can be offered as a supplement but should not dominate the diet.
Mating
No field observations or aquarium breeding reports specific to A. falconensis are on record. The mating system is expected to follow the well-documented Ancistrus pattern: males are territorial, defending a preferred cave or crevice site that they prepare for spawning. Snout tentacles in males are thought to play a role in male–male competition, with more elaborately tentacled males potentially outcompeting rivals for prime territories.
Conditioned females recognise territorial males and will investigate potential spawning caves. The male's interopercular odontodes become more pronounced during the breeding season. Multiple females may be associated with one male's territory, and males may spawn sequentially with different females depending on tank conditions.
Breeding
No breeding reports for A. falconensis are documented in the available literature or hobbyist records. Based on Ancistrus reproductive biology, the species is expected to spawn in caves — the male selects a hollow in wood, a rocky crevice, or a ceramic tube, the female deposits adhesive eggs on the interior surface, and the male assumes sole parental responsibility: fanning the clutch with his pectoral and caudal fins to maintain oxygenation, removing infertile eggs, and guarding the emerging fry until they become free-swimming.
Typical Ancistrus clutch sizes range from a few dozen to over one hundred eggs depending on female size and condition. Incubation lasts approximately five to seven days at tropical temperatures. Fry are initially sustained by their yolk sac and begin active grazing shortly after becoming free-swimming.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus falconensis is not currently established in the aquarium hobby — no registered keepers or breeding reports appear in hobbyist databases as of the time of writing. Wild-caught individuals from Falcón State would be extremely rare in trade given the restricted range and the relative inaccessibility of small Venezuelan coastal drainages.
Should the species become available, care would likely follow standard Ancistrus guidelines. A tank of 15–20 US gal would suffice for a pair, furnished with flat stones, driftwood, and ceramic caves to satisfy territorial behaviour. Water temperature in the range of 72–82 °F is a reasonable working estimate for a Venezuelan coastal stream species, with soft to moderately hard water and a pH near neutral. Strong filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as with all Ancistrus.
The species' restricted distribution — two small Caribbean coastal drainages — makes it potentially vulnerable to any localised habitat disturbance, which adds conservation interest to any future captive-breeding effort.
Conservation
Ancistrus falconensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species is endemic to the Hueque and Ricoa rivers in Falcón State, Venezuela — a narrow range within small Caribbean coastal drainages. This restricted distribution makes it inherently susceptible to localised threats such as water extraction, agricultural runoff, and deforestation of riparian corridors.
No population data, abundance estimates, or collection pressure records are available. An IUCN assessment would require field surveys to document population size and trend. Until such an assessment is completed, the precautionary status remains Not Evaluated.
