A compact bristlenose pleco from the Ampiyacu River basin of northern Peru, Ancistrus malacops is one of the smaller species in its genus at under 3 in standard length. Known from submerged logs and shaded stream margins in primary forest, it is collected for the ornamental trade at a level considered non-significant by the IUCN, which assesses it as Least Concern with populations relatively abundant at some sites.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus malacops was described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1872 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 23, pp. 287, pl. 5, figs. 2a–b). Cope placed it in Chaetostomus — a now-deprecated genus — as Chaetostomus malacops. The species was later treated as a subspecies (Chaetostomus aculeatus malacops) before being transferred to Ancistrus. Both of those combinations are currently treated as synonyms of the valid name Ancistrus malacops (Cope, 1872), as recognised by Fisch-Muller (2003) and maintained by the Catalog of Fishes.

The type locality, recorded by Cope as Río Ambyiacu, Peru, corresponds to the Ampiyacu River in the Loreto region of north-eastern Peru — a blackwater tributary of the Amazon. PlanetCatfish records the species under its type locality as 'Amazon, Upper Amazon, Ampiyacu'.

In the FAO literature the species is referred to locally as 'Carachama', a vernacular name applied in Peru to various small plecostomus-type loricariids. No L-number has been assigned. Ancistrus malacops belongs to subfamily Hypostominae within Loricariidae. The name Ancistrus occidentalis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum of 3 in standard length (SL), making A. malacops one of the smaller Ancistrus species documented in the literature. Three photographic records are held on PlanetCatfish showing lateral, dorsal, and ventral views, confirming the typical Ancistrus body plan: broad depressed head, compact armoured body covered in bony scutes, and a ventrally positioned rasping oral disc.

As in all Ancistrus, sexual dimorphism is pronounced in adults. Males develop the genus-defining fleshy branched tentacles on the snout and along the interopercular margin — prominent in breeding condition and used in display. Females typically develop minor tentacles at most, and gravid females show a distinctly broader body profile when viewed from above. This dimorphism makes sex determination straightforward in adults and is a reliable guide for identifying breeding pairs.

The species epithet malacops comes from the Greek malakos (soft) and ops (eye or face), likely referring to a textural or colour characteristic of the type specimen. Beyond size and the standard Ancistrus body plan, detailed morphological notes specific to A. malacops are limited to the original Cope description.

Habitat

Ancistrus malacops is known from the Ampiyacu River drainage in Loreto, north-eastern Peru — a blackwater tributary flowing through lowland Amazonian primary forest. The IUCN assessment describes the habitat as permanent rivers and streams with mixed, black, and white waters; the species is found in areas with abundant woody debris and organic material, typically in stretches shaded by intact primary forest canopy.

A key microhabitat is submerged logs and large pieces of woody debris — consistent with the general Ancistrus ecological pattern of associating with wood for shelter, grazing surface, and spawning substrate. The IUCN notes the species is found in 'submerged logs' specifically. Blackwater environments in this region are characterised by soft, acidic water rich in humic and tannic compounds from leaf litter decomposition; specific physico-chemical measurements for the Ampiyacu are not given in the assessment.

The species occurs in at least one protected area within its range, which supports the Least Concern assessment. The IUCN further notes that populations are 'relatively abundant at some sites', suggesting it is not rare within suitable habitat.

Feeding

The IUCN assessment records the diet of A. malacops as aquatic and terrestrial arthropods and, to a lesser degree, periphyton — an unusually animal-protein-rich diet for an Ancistrus compared with the predominantly algae-grazing mode typical of the genus. This composition is consistent with the heavily shaded, low-light habitat in primary forest, where algal productivity on submerged surfaces is reduced and invertebrates associated with woody debris and leaf litter become a proportionally more important food source.

PlanetCatfish characterises the species as primarily vegetarian/algae-based, reflecting the general Ancistrus feeding profile. The two dietary descriptions are not mutually exclusive: Ancistrus in low-light forest environments opportunistically consume invertebrates while maintaining a baseline biofilm and periphyton scraping mode. Submerged logs in the Ampiyacu carry rich invertebrate communities (aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms) alongside algal and fungal films.

Mating

No field observations of courtship in A. malacops have been published, and captive breeding accounts in the accessible literature are limited. The genus Ancistrus is well-characterised in the aquarium hobby as cavity-breeding with pronounced male territoriality, and these patterns apply broadly across the genus.

Mature males defend crevice territories around preferred log hollows or rocky overhangs, using their branched tentacles in visual display toward rival males and potential mates. A receptive female is attracted into the cavity, where spawning takes place on the interior walls. Males may be aggressively territorial toward other males; in aquaria multiple females can generally be accommodated by a single male in a sufficiently space-rich environment.

Breeding

Ancistrus malacops is a cave spawner with paternal brood care, following the reproductive pattern universal in Ancistrus. Eggs are adhesive and deposited on the walls or ceiling of a sheltered cavity — a submerged log hollow, undercut root, or rocky crevice in the wild. The male remains in the cavity throughout incubation, fanning the egg mass with his pectoral fins to maintain water circulation and oxygen delivery, and removing infertile or fungused eggs.

Fry emerge bearing the miniature adult body plan and begin scraping surfaces shortly after becoming free-swimming. No clutch size data specific to A. malacops appear in the accessible literature; Ancistrus generally produce clutches of a few dozen to over 100 eggs depending on species and female size. Incubation at tropical temperatures typically spans five to seven days across the genus.

The IUCN notes that A. malacops is collected for the international ornamental trade, implying some level of wild capture; captive breeding would reduce pressure on wild populations, though no dedicated breeding programme is documented.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus malacops is collected for the ornamental trade from its Ampiyacu River range, though it does not appear under its scientific name in mainstream hobby channels and may reach the trade unlabelled or under generic 'bristlenose pleco' labels. Its small adult size — under 3 in SL — makes it a genuinely manageable pleco for modest aquaria.

As a forest blackwater species associated with submerged wood, it would benefit from husbandry that includes driftwood (both as a grazing surface and as potential spawning site), shaded conditions, and soft, slightly acidic water reflecting its Amazonian origin. Suitable tankmates include other small, peaceful species tolerant of soft, warm water.

Dietary provision should include algae-based foods (algae wafers, spirulina), blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich supplementation (small invertebrates, bloodworm) consistent with the higher arthropod component noted in the wild diet. Providing multiple cave or crevice options — hollow logs, ceramic caves, sections of PVC pipe — supports natural behaviour and breeding potential in males.

Water parameters based on the Ampiyacu blackwater environment would suggest: warm (75–82 °F), soft, and acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0), though specific measurements from the collection locality are not available.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus malacops as Least Concern, with the evaluation conducted by M. Velasquez, L. Chocano, and M. Hidalgo del Aguila on 23 April 2014, published in 2016 (reviewed by N.A. Cox). The assessment notes that the species is not exposed to any major threats and occurs in at least two protected areas. Populations are described as relatively abundant at some sites, though the overall trend is unknown.

Ornamental collection is noted as a trade use but is not considered a significant threat at current levels. The annotation on the assessment indicates it needs updating — a decade has elapsed since the last review, and conditions in the Loreto region have evolved. Habitat pressures in north-eastern Peru include deforestation, agricultural expansion into primary forest, and the associated degradation of shaded, debris-rich stream habitats that this species depends upon. The protection status of key populations provides some buffer against localised decline.
