Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus maracasae was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1946, making it one of the earlier formally named members of the sprawling genus Ancistrus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus maracasae Fowler, 1946 as a valid species. The type locality is associated with Trinidad, and the species epithet refers to Maracas — a locality name on the island.
Ancistrus is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in Loricariidae, with well over 70 described species and an unknown number of undescribed populations. All Ancistrus belong to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae. The genus is distinguished from most other loricariid catfishes by the presence of branched, fleshy tentacles ('bristles') on the snout of adult males and, to a lesser degree, females — a feature not shared by Panaqolus, Hypostomus, or most other plecos.
Trinidad is a continental island, geologically derived from the South American mainland and separated from northeastern Venezuela only by the shallow Gulf of Paria. Its freshwater ichthyofauna has strong affinities with northern Venezuelan drainages, particularly those flowing through the Orinoco delta region, so A. maracasae likely belongs to a fauna with South American roots.
Morphology
The maximum recorded standard length for Ancistrus maracasae is 4 in SL according to FishBase. Like other members of the genus, it carries the characteristic loricariid body armour of interlocking bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows, and the underslung, disc-like mouth adapted for rasping surfaces.
The most recognisable feature of adult Ancistrus is the array of fleshy, branched tentacles arising from the snout — more numerous and elaborate in males than in females. These are unique to the genus and serve as a reliable generic identification character. Ancistrus maracasae is not a species commonly seen in the hobby, and no specific aquarium-keeping accounts have been located. General guidance for small Ancistrus is a reasonable starting point: a moderately sized aquarium (from around 20 US gal for a single fish, more for a group) with adequate filtration, plenty of surface area for grazing, and several caves or crevices for shelter and potential spawning.
As a Trinidadian species with probable affinities to northern Venezuelan drainages, a temperature range of approximately 75–82 °F and a pH near neutral (6.8–7.5) are likely appropriate, though these figures are inferred from the species' biogeographic context rather than direct field measurement. Water quality should be kept clean — Ancistrus are sensitive to elevated nitrates over sustained periods.
Driftwood and smooth rocks provide naturalistic grazing surfaces and retreats. This species should not be expected to rely on wood as a primary food source in the way that Panaqolus or Panaque do. If specimens become available, husbandry observations from keepers would be of genuine scientific and hobbyist value given the species' obscurity.
Conservation
Ancistrus maracasae has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and no specific conservation assessment or population-level data are available. Trinidad's freshwater habitats face ongoing pressures from urban development, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and introduced species — factors that affect island endemics with limited range particularly acutely.
