One of the few Ancistrus endemic to the Atlantic coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil, Ancistrus multispinis is a robust bristlenose catfish whose range runs from the Macacú River in Rio de Janeiro state south to the Maquiné River in Rio Grande do Sul — entirely outside the Amazon basin. It was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1912 from material originally misidentified by Steindachner as Ancistrus stigmaticus, and has since been confirmed by molecular phylogenetics as a distinct lineage with a largely overlooked presence in the Brazilian hobby and domestic research literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus multispinis was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1912 in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (1912, part 3, article 36, page 668, Plate 76, figure 1). The type locality given on PlanetCatfish is the Rio Humboldt and Rio Itapocú, Santa Catarina, southeastern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid 4960) records the valid combination as Ancistrus multispinis (Regan 1912) in Loricariidae: Hypostominae.

The species has accumulated a notable synonymy that reflects decades of confusion with sympatric and geographically proximate Ancistrus. PlanetCatfish lists the following synonyms: Ancistrus multispinus (a misspelling variant), Hemiancistrus albocinctus, Peckoltia albocincta, and Xenocara multispinis — the last being the original combination used by some subsequent authors before the genus Xenocara was synonymised with Ancistrus. FishBase notes that Steindachner (1911) provided a description of the species as Ancistrus stigmaticus; Muller (1989) provided morphological data and illustrated the lectotype; and Buck & Sazima (1995) published ecological observations with photographs of living specimens. Montoya-Burgos et al. (1997, 1998) placed the species in a molecular phylogeny based on 12S and 16S mitochondrial rRNA sequences.

No L-number or LDA-number has been assigned; the species has not been formally registered under the DATZ/DATZ-Extra photo-coding system used for new pleco imports, consistent with its native range being southern Brazil rather than the Orinoco, Negro, or Xingu systems that typically supply the ornamental trade.

Morphology

Adults reach up to 5.5 in standard length (SL) per FishBase (referencing Fisch-Muller 2003) — a size consistent with the mid-range of the Ancistrus genus, comparable to the familiar Ancistrus dolichopterus of the trade. Like all Ancistrus, A. multispinis bears the family's characteristic bony scute armour and a ventrally positioned, sucker-like mouth.

The defining character of the genus, and the easiest way to distinguish Ancistrus from superficially similar plecos, is the presence of fleshy tentacles on the snout. In Ancistrus multispinis, as in other species of the genus, mature males develop an elaborate array of soft, branched tentacles covering the entire rostral pad and the dorsal snout — structures with no parallel in other loricariid genera. In females, tentacles develop only along the snout margin, if at all, and to a much lesser extent than in males.

The epithet multispinis (Latin: 'many spines') refers to the interopercular odontodes — the hooked, spine-like projections on the cheek plates that are characteristic of the genus Ancistrus (from Greek agkistron, 'hook'). In A. multispinis these interopercular odontodes are numerous, giving the lateral head a distinctly bristled appearance beyond that of some congeners. Muller's (1989) morphological study illustrated these features in detail using the lectotype.

Habitat

Ancistrus multispinis is an Atlantic coastal drainage endemic, restricted to the series of short, independent river systems that drain the Serra do Mar and adjoining escarpments directly to the Atlantic coast of southeastern Brazil. FishBase (citing Fisch-Muller 2003) gives the distribution as the coastal drainage from the Macacú River (Rio de Janeiro state, ca. 22°S) in the north to the Maquiné River (Rio Grande do Sul state, ca. 29°S) in the south — a latitudinal range of about 435 mi spanning four states.

These Atlantic coastal rivers are geologically and hydrologically distinct from the Amazonian and Paraná-Paraguay systems. They originate in the Atlantic Forest biome, one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened terrestrial ecosystems. Water chemistry varies by locality but is generally soft to moderately hard, slightly to moderately acidic, and cool to warm (61–79 °F) depending on altitude and season. Buck & Sazima (1995) published ecological observations of the species in the field, noting typical loricariid microhabitat use: rock surfaces, crevices, and submerged wood in flowing sections of rivers and streams.

At least part of the range extends into subtropical conditions — the southern limit (Rio Grande do Sul) experiences seasonal winter temperatures substantially below those typical of Amazonian or Orinoco species, suggesting a somewhat wider thermal tolerance.

Feeding

Ancistrus species are broadly herbivore-detritivores, using the modified ventral mouth — equipped with numerous small, fine teeth — to rasp biofilm, periphyton, and soft algae from rock surfaces and submerged wood. Ancistrus multispinis feeds in the same manner as its congeners: primary diet in the wild consists of algae, biofilm (bacteria, diatoms, cyanobacteria), fine organic detritus, and — based on gut analyses of similar Atlantic-coast loricariids — occasional aquatic invertebrate material.

FishBase notes that the species is a facultative or obligate air-breather (citing reference 126274), which reflects a physiological adaptation common in loricariids inhabiting oxygen-variable environments such as shallow, seasonally warm or organically-loaded streams — consistent with the summer conditions in some Atlantic coastal streams of southeastern Brazil.

In the aquarium, the feeding regime appropriate for Ancistrus generally applies: algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking foods form the staple; blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, peas, and sweet potato are accepted readily; driftwood for grazing is beneficial but not obligatory. Small amounts of protein supplement (bloodworm, Daphnia) round out the diet. Overfeeding or poor water quality rapidly degrades condition in this genus.

Mating

Courtship in Ancistrus multispinis is presumed to follow the pattern universal to the genus: males establish and defend cave territories (rock crevices, hollow wood, root tangles, or artificial caves in captivity) and display the elaborate tentacle array and interopercular spines — structures that serve as honest signals of male fitness and condition. A male in breeding condition is highly conspicuous: the tentacles are fully extended, the interopercular spine fans are erect, and the animal actively patrols and guards its chosen site.

Conditioned females show increased abdominal depth, particularly when viewed from above; their reduced tentacle development makes sex identification straightforward in well-conditioned adults. Male–male competition can result in bite injuries to the tentacles and fins if cave availability is limited. In tanks housing multiple males, providing at least one cave per male reduces chronic aggression to an acceptable level.

The southerly distribution of A. multispinis (extending to 29°S) means that seasonal temperature variation may play a stronger role in stimulating breeding condition than in equatorial Ancistrus species; lowering tank temperature by 36–37 °F in winter (to 64–68 °F) followed by gradual warming may mimic natural seasonal cues.

Breeding

All Ancistrus are obligate cave spawners with exclusive paternal brood care — one of the most well-studied breeding systems in the Loricariidae. After the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the cave ceiling or walls and fertilisation occurs, the male blocks the cave entrance and fans the egg mass with his pectoral fins for the entire incubation period, guarding the clutch against predators and removing non-viable eggs.

No formal breeding report for Ancistrus multispinis has been filed on PlanetCatfish (7 registered keepers as of 2026, no breeding blog), suggesting that captive propagation of this species, while certainly achievable given its close relationship to frequently-bred congeners, has not been formally documented. Based on the genus norm for similar-sized Ancistrus: clutch size is typically 50–150 eggs; incubation at 72–77 °F takes 5–7 days; fry begin free-swimming within 1–2 weeks, initially subsisting on their yolk sac before moving to algae and fine food. The male continues guarding until the fry have dispersed from the cave.

For southern Brazilian populations, cooler-season conditions (64–72 °F) followed by warming and increased feeding mimic the natural trigger; the species likely breeds in spring–summer in the southern hemisphere (October–January). Soft-to-moderate water (pH 6.5–7.5) is appropriate given the range of Atlantic coastal substrates.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus multispinis is rarely seen in the international ornamental trade; most Ancistrus bristlenoses offered commercially in Europe and North America are A. dolichopterus, A. temminckii, A. claro, or captive-bred hybrid 'bushy-noses' of ambiguous parentage. A. multispinis is primarily kept by Brazilian aquarists and researchers, and by specialists who acquire wild-caught or locally bred specimens.

Care requirements follow the genus pattern. Adult size of up to 5.5 in SL (approximately 6.5–7 in total length) means the species requires a tank of at least 25–30 US gal; a 150-litre aquarium with adequate caves and wood surfaces is a comfortable standard. Water parameters should reflect the Atlantic coastal origin: temperature 64–79 °F (tolerant of cooler winter temperatures, important for southern-latitude specimens), pH 6.5–7.5, and moderately soft water up to about 15 °dH. The species is sufficiently tolerant of cooler temperatures to be of interest to unheated or lightly heated aquaria in temperate climates during cooler months.

Decoration should include smooth-bore caves (PVC pipe, ceramic cave, or hollow driftwood of appropriate diameter — approximately 2 in for adults) and flat surfaces for algae grazing. Driftwood for grazing and shelter is beneficial; robust plants (Echinodorus, Anubias, Java fern) can be included.

The species is non-aggressive toward other fish and is compatible with most community fish that share its temperature range. As with all Ancistrus, males are territorial toward conspecific males; in tanks housing more than one male, multiple caves spaced apart with visual barriers reduce stress. Compatible tankmates include tetras, Corydoras, and mid-water fish from subtropical and warm-temperate Brazilian rivers.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus multispinis as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 7 November 2018. The distribution across the Atlantic coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil — spanning five states and multiple independent river systems — is a factor in the species' tolerably secure status at the level of the whole species.

However, the Atlantic Forest biome that these drainages traverse is one of the most threatened biomes on Earth: less than 12% of original cover remains, and the rivers of the southeastern Atlantic coast face intense pressure from urban and agricultural runoff, water abstraction, channel modification, and invasive species. The Rio de Janeiro state drainages at the northern end of the range are heavily urbanised and industrialised; the Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul portions are subject to intensive agriculture.

FishBase notes the species as of no commercial fisheries interest, which reduces direct collection pressure. The primary threats are indirect: habitat degradation through deforestation-driven sedimentation, urban effluent, agrochemicals, and the introduction of invasive species. Buck & Sazima (1995) noted the species using typical loricariid microhabitat in relatively intact streams; continued loss of riparian forest and stream shading degrades both the algal food base and the oxygenated riffle habitat these fish depend on. The subspecific-level Brazilian Atlantic coast fish fauna warrants sustained monitoring.
