A dwarf bristlenose from the headwater igarapés of the upper Tapajós basin in Mato Grosso, Ancistrus parecis is Near Threatened — its small streams sit squarely in Brazil's Arc of Deforestation, and a cascade of planned hydroelectric dams on the Juruena tributaries could fragment what remains of its already restricted range. Anatomically distinctive within the genus for lacking a well-formed adipose fin, it has not reached the ornamental trade and is known only from a handful of scientific collections.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus parecis was described by Sibylle Fisch-Muller, Alexandre R. Cardoso, João F. P. da Silva, and Vinicius A. Bertaco in 2005 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 3, number 4, pages 525–532), alongside the related Ancistrus verecundus. The type series was collected at Campos de Júlio, Río Formiga — a tributary of the Río Juruena in the upper Tapajós basin — on highway BR-364 (13°41'01"S, 59°12'11"W), Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus parecis as the valid name.

The genus Ancistrus Kner, 1854 is placed within tribe Ancistrini, subfamily Hypostominae, family Loricariidae. The genus is broadly defined by eversible interopercular odontodes — the bristles — and a primarily Neotropical distribution. Ancistrus parecis was described as part of the Amazonian fauna of the Tapajós headwaters, an area with relatively high loricariid diversity.

The specific epithet parecis is a noun in apposition referring to the Chapada dos Parecis, the flat tableland plateau in western Mato Grosso from which the type locality river systems drain. The name honours the geographical and cultural landscape of the Parecis indigenous people who have inhabited this plateau for centuries.

Morphology

Adults of Ancistrus parecis are small: the maximum recorded size is 2.5 in SL (2.5 in; PlanetCatfish data), and the IUCN assessment cites a maximum total length of 2.5 in, indicating a genuinely diminutive species even within the size-variable genus Ancistrus.

The most diagnostically significant morphological character is the absence of a well-formed adipose fin. Whereas the large majority of loricariids — including most Ancistrus — possess a distinct adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, A. parecis instead bears a series of 4–6 small median unpaired platelets forming a low postdorsal ridge in this position. This character, documented in the original description (Fisch-Muller et al., 2005, Figs. 3–4), is unusual within the genus and serves as a reliable identification feature distinguishing A. parecis from the many superficially similar small Ancistrus of Amazonian headwaters.

Otherwise, the body is covered in the typical loricariid bony scute armour, with an unarmoured abdomen. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus standard: mature males develop branched, fleshy tentacles on the snout that are absent or minimally expressed in females. Females may show short marginal tentacle stubs but never the elaborate branched arrays seen in adult males.

Habitat

Ancistrus parecis is endemic to Brazil and is restricted to small rivers and streams — locally termed igarapés — with intact riparian forest in the Campos de Júlio region of Mato Grosso, in the upper Juruena tributary system of the Tapajós basin. The type locality streams lie on or near the Chapada dos Parecis plateau (approximately 1969 ft elevation), in the transition zone between cerrado (savanna) and rainforest.

The IUCN assessment (2018) places the species within a confined extent of occurrence of approximately 1,373 mi² — an extraordinarily restricted range. Known records are confined to the Rios Juína and Formiga, both tributaries of the upper Río Juruena. These are small, clear to turbid blackwater streams with riparian gallery forest providing shade and organic matter inputs. The plateau origin suggests cooler temperatures and moderate current rather than the extreme rapids of some Ancistrus habitats.

The species is not recorded from any protected area, leaving it entirely dependent on the maintenance of privately held or unprotected riparian forest.

Feeding

No stomach content analyses for Ancistrus parecis have been published. Diet is inferred from genus-level ecology: Ancistrus are primary algal grazers and periphyton scrapers, using the ventral sucker-mouth to rasp biofilm — algae, diatoms, bacteria, and associated fine organic matter — from hard substrates including rock, wood, and leaf litter.

In the clear, forest-shaded streams of the Chapada dos Parecis, epilithic algal growth is likely moderate compared to open-canopy rivers; particulate organic matter delivered by overhanging riparian vegetation and decomposing leaf litter may represent an important dietary supplement. No aquarium husbandry data exist for this species, which has not been recorded in the ornamental trade.

Mating

No mating observations have been published for Ancistrus parecis. Courtship behaviour in the genus involves males establishing and defending territories centred on a suitable cavity — a crevice between rocks, a hollow in submerged wood, or an undercut bank. Males display their snout tentacles to rivals and to potential mates; territorial disputes involve lateral displays and occasionally brief physical contact.

The modest tentacle development typical of smaller Ancistrus species, combined with the absence of any aquarium data, means nothing specific can be said about mate-choice or territorial dynamics in A. parecis beyond the genus-level pattern.

Breeding

No captive breeding has been reported for Ancistrus parecis, and the species has not reached the ornamental trade. Breeding mode is inferred from the genus: Ancistrus are cave spawners with exclusive paternal brood care. The male selects and aggressively defends a narrow cavity, the female deposits adhesive eggs on the interior walls, and the male then fans and guards the clutch until fry absorb their yolk sacs and begin feeding independently.

Sabaj et al. (1999) documented this spawning mode across Ancistrus and proposed that the male's fleshy snout tentacles may function as larval mimics, reducing nest predation by deceiving approaching predators. Whether this applies to A. parecis — whose tentacles are not described as particularly elaborate — has not been investigated. PlanetCatfish lists no registered keepers or breeding reports for this species as of 2026.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus parecis has not been collected for the ornamental trade and is unknown in the aquarium hobby. No hobbyist accounts, tank-derived water chemistry tolerances, feeding observations, or breeding reports exist. The species should be considered data-absent for husbandry purposes.

If specimens were hypothetically available, the small adult size (maximum 2.5 in SL) would make A. parecis one of the most compact Ancistrus available — manageable in relatively modest aquaria by the standards of the genus. The plateau headwater origin suggests cooler temperatures (perhaps 72–79 °F), soft to moderately soft water, and clean, well-oxygenated conditions consistent with forested highland streams. Until the species enters the trade and hobbyists gain direct experience, any further husbandry guidance would be speculative.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus parecis as Near Threatened in November 2018 under criterion B1b(iii), reflecting its restricted extent of occurrence (approximately 1,373 mi²) combined with projected ongoing habitat quality loss. The population trend is assessed as decreasing.

The species' entire known range falls within Brazil's Arc of Deforestation — the advancing frontier of agricultural and urban expansion eating into Amazonian and cerrado-transition landscapes. Specific threats identified in the assessment include urbanisation, agribusiness expansion (soybean and cattle), and ranching, all of which drive riparian forest loss, sedimentation of small streams, elevated water temperature, and reduced dissolved oxygen. Several planned small hydroelectric dams (PCHs) on both the Río Juína (Juína I, Presente de Deus, Comodoro) and Río Formiga (Divisa, Nordeste, Ilhotas, Formiga) threaten to fragment and alter flow regimes in the very streams where this species is known to occur.

Critically, A. parecis is not recorded inside any protected area. The IUCN assessors recommended riparian forest maintenance, population monitoring, and additional ecological research as conservation priorities. No commercial use of the species is documented. Given these pressures on a restricted-range endemic with no protected-area refuge, ongoing monitoring of the Juína and Formiga drainages is warranted.
