Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus spinosus was formally described by Seth Eugene Meek and Samuel Hildebrand in 1913 in the Field Museum of Natural History Zoological Series (volume 10, number 15, page 252), from specimens taken in a tributary of Río Calobre, itself a tributary of the Río Bayano drainage in Panama. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus spinosus Meek & Hildebrand, 1913 as a valid species, with no synonyms currently listed.
The genus Ancistrus Kner, 1854 is the largest genus within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae, and encompasses the fish broadly known as bristlenose or bushynose plecos — named for the remarkable fleshy tentacles adult males develop on the snout. The species epithet spinosus is derived from the Latin spina (thorn or spine), alluding to the pronounced odontodes (spine-like dermal denticles) that arm the body and fin rays of this species.
A. spinosus represents the northernmost confirmed Ancistrus in Central America, making it biogeographically notable: the vast majority of the genus is distributed across South America, and the Río Bayano drainage in eastern Panama marks a distinct outpost at the edge of the genus's range.
Morphology
Ancistrus spinosus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 7 in (SL), making it one of the larger species in a genus where most members stay below 4.5–5 in. The body follows the typical loricariid plan: dorsoventrally flattened, encased in rows of overlapping bony scutes, with a ventral mouth adapted for grazing on hard surfaces and a large first dorsal spine and pectoral spines fortified with robust odontodes.
The most striking feature of the genus — and one that immediately identifies any adult male Ancistrus — is the elaborate array of branched, fleshy tentacles covering the snout and interopercular region. These are not spines but soft, dermal outgrowths that can become elaborate in older males, branching repeatedly and extending several millimetres forward from the rostrum. The functional role of these tentacles remains debated; mate assessment and species recognition are both proposed. Females lack prominent snout tentacles, though some may develop modest, unbranched growths around the snout margin.
Body colouration in the genus is generally dark — brown to near-black — often marked with pale spots or a reticulate pattern across the scutes. Specific colouration for A. spinosus is not fully documented in available sources.
Habitat
Ancistrus spinosus is known from the Río Bayano drainage of eastern Panama — a Pacific-slope river that drains a large watershed before reaching the Gulf of Panama. The type locality is a tributary of Río Calobre, a smaller stream within the broader Bayano system.
The Río Bayano basin encompasses a range of habitats from highland streams in the Serranía de San Blas to broader lowland river channels. Ancistrus species in general favour swift, well-oxygenated streams and rivers with hard substrates — bedrock outcrops, cobble, and submerged wood — to which they cling using their ventrally positioned mouths and pectoral spines. Tropical river conditions in this region include warm temperatures year-round, with seasonal variation in water volume and turbidity corresponding to the wet (April–November) and dry seasons.

Feeding
Like all Ancistrus, A. spinosus is primarily a periphyton and biofilm grazer — using its ventral, scraper-type mouth to rasp algae, diatoms, biofilm, and associated fine detritus from rock surfaces, submerged wood, and hard substrate. The teeth of Ancistrus are bicuspid and moveable, adapted to scraping rather than wood-boring; unlike true xylophages such as Panaque, Ancistrus digests the organic material coating hard surfaces rather than cellulose itself.
In the aquarium, the genus readily accepts algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato), and will graze actively on surfaces that have developed a thin algal film. Small amounts of protein-rich foods can be offered occasionally, but the diet should remain predominantly plant-based.
Mating
Courtship behaviour in Ancistrus species centres on the male's selection and defence of a suitable spawning cavity. Males compete for access to caves, hollow wood sections, or crevices in rock, and the development of elaborate snout tentacles in mature males is thought to play a role in mate assessment — females of many Ancistrus species preferentially select males with more developed, branching tentacles, which may signal age, health, or genetic quality.
Males signal their readiness and territorial claim through postural displays and by occupying and maintaining the chosen cavity. A receptive female will approach and inspect the male and his cave; if conditions are suitable, she will enter to spawn. After the female has deposited her eggs, she departs and the male takes over sole responsibility for the clutch.
Breeding
Ancistrus species are cave-spawners with paternal brood care — a well-established pattern across the genus. The male selects a narrow cavity and guards it, coaxing a ripe female inside to deposit a clutch of adhesive eggs on the cavity walls or ceiling. Once spawning is complete, the male remains in the cave and fans the eggs continuously with his pectoral and pelvic fins, maintaining oxygen flow and removing any eggs that fungus or fail to develop.
Incubation periods across the genus typically span five to seven days at tropical temperatures. Newly hatched fry remain attached to their yolk sacs for several more days before becoming free-swimming; during this period the male continues to guard. Fry are already capable grazers by the time they leave the nest and quickly begin rasping algae from available surfaces.
No aquarium breeding records specifically for A. spinosus are documented in available sources, and the species is not currently reported in cultivation. General Ancistrus husbandry principles apply where specific data are absent.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus spinosus is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It does not carry an L-number or LDA code and appears on no registered keeper lists in available hobbyist databases, which is consistent with the species' remote Central American range and its apparent absence from the ornamental trade.
Its larger adult size — up to 7 in SL, considerably larger than the common bristlenose (A. cirrhosus and trade relatives, typically 4–5 in) — would place it among the more substantial Ancistrus if it were to enter cultivation. In principle, care requirements would follow standard Ancistrus practice: clean, well-oxygenated water with strong filtration, plenty of hiding spaces and flat wood surfaces for grazing, a predominantly vegetable diet, and a temperature range appropriate for tropical Central American rivers (roughly 75–82 °F).
Any specimens encountered should be treated with care; given the limited distribution of this species in a single Panamanian river system, the conservation status of wild populations is unknown, and collection for trade has not been assessed.
Conservation
Ancistrus spinosus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is currently unknown. The species has a restricted known range — the Río Bayano basin in Panama — and has not been formally re-evaluated since its original description in 1913.
The Río Bayano watershed has experienced significant alteration since the mid-twentieth century, most notably through the construction of the Bayano Hydroelectric Dam (completed 1976), which created a large reservoir and altered the hydrology, sediment dynamics, and fish community structure of the lower basin. The long-term impact of these changes on endemic fish species such as A. spinosus is not documented in available literature.
The restricted distribution, apparent rarity in collections, and habitat alteration in its native watershed suggest that a formal IUCN assessment of this species would be valuable. Until such an assessment is conducted, its conservation standing cannot be determined.
