Ancistrus stigmaticus is a bristlenose catfish described by Rosa and Carl Eigenmann in 1889 from the upper Amazon drainage of Peru, with specimens known from the Río Huallaga and associated tributaries in the Andean-foothill transition zone. One of several small to medium-sized Ancistrus from the western Amazon, it occupies fast-flowing, clear rivers draining the Peruvian sub-Andes and remains one of the less frequently encountered members of the genus in both the scientific and aquarium literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus stigmaticus was described by Rosa Smith Eigenmann and Carl H. Eigenmann in their 1889 monograph 'Preliminary notes on South American Nematognathi' published in Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences (series 2, vol. 2, pp. 28–56). The species epithet stigmaticus derives from the Greek stigma, meaning mark or spot, in reference to the spotted colouration noted in the type specimens. The type locality is the Río Huallaga, Peru — a major tributary of the upper Marañón–Amazon system that descends from the eastern Andes into the Amazonian lowlands.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Ancistrus stigmaticus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 as a valid species, distinct from the numerous synonyms that have accumulated around other Ancistrus taxa. It is placed in the genus Ancistrus Kner, 1854, within subfamily Hypostominae and the tribe Ancistrini. The genus is one of the largest in Loricariidae, with the number of valid species having grown substantially since molecular and morphological revisions began in the early 2000s.

The internal phylogeny of Ancistrus remains incompletely resolved, and A. stigmaticus has not been included in any recent comprehensive molecular study to the author's knowledge. Its precise systematic position within the genus — and whether it belongs to a recognisable western-Amazonian species group — is not established. No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

Ancistrus stigmaticus conforms to the standard Ancistrus body plan: a strongly dorsoventrally flattened body, a broad head with an inferior suckermouth, and the characteristic bony dermal scutes (odontodes on lateral plates) of all loricariids. The ventral surface is unarmoured and pale. Maximum reported standard length is approximately 4.5–5 in, placing it in the medium range for the genus.

As in all Ancistrus, the most visually distinctive feature is the development of fleshy tentacles on the snout margin and dorsal head surface in adult males. These tentacles are absent in juveniles of both sexes and remain reduced or vestigial in adult females, providing a clear sexing character once fish reach sexual maturity. Males also develop hooked interopercular odontodes visible externally as fine spines along the cheek margin.

The species epithet refers to spotting — preserved and live specimens show small pale spots or flecks on a dark brown to grey-brown ground colour across the dorsum and fins, a pattern common to many Ancistrus species from Andean drainages. No formal redescription or detailed morphometric study of A. stigmaticus has been published since the Eigenmanns' original description, meaning precise meristic data and limits relative to congeners from the Huallaga and adjacent systems remain inadequately characterised.

Habitat

Ancistrus stigmaticus is known from the Río Huallaga drainage in Peru, a right-bank tributary of the Río Marañón that forms part of the upper Amazon basin. The Huallaga originates in the Andes of Junín and Huánuco departments and descends through a series of rapids and gorges before entering the Amazonian lowlands — the sub-Andean foothills section, where the type specimens were likely collected, is characterised by rocky, fast-flowing river reaches with high oxygen concentrations and relatively clear water.

Water in such sub-Andean Peruvian rivers tends to be moderately warm (72–82 °F), slightly to moderately soft, and close to neutral in pH — conditions that reflect mixing of Andean mineral-rich runoff with upper Amazonian blackwater influences. Substrates are predominantly rock and cobble in faster reaches, with sand and fine gravel in slacker sections. Epilithic algal biofilm (periphyton) is abundant on sunlit rock surfaces.

FishBase records the species as a freshwater, benthic (demersal) species. Its depth range within rivers is not specifically documented; like other Ancistrus, it presumably occupies the littoral zone of rocky riverbanks and the undersides of submerged boulders and woody debris. There are no records of the species from still or slow-moving waters.

Feeding

Ancistrus stigmaticus is a periphyton grazer, rasping epilithic algae, biofilm, and associated organic material from rock surfaces with its ventral suckermouth and multi-cusped spatulate teeth. This trophic mode is universal among Ancistrus and reflects the genus's morphological specialisation for scraping hard substrates in flowing-water habitats.

Gut content data specific to A. stigmaticus are not published in the available literature. By analogy with related species from similar Andean-foothill environments, the diet in the wild is likely dominated by diatoms, filamentous green algae, and the detrital fraction of periphyton communities, supplemented by small invertebrates encountered incidentally during foraging.

In captivity, as with all Ancistrus, the diet should be predominantly vegetarian: high-quality algae wafers or spirulina-based sinking pellets form the staple, supplemented by blanched vegetables such as courgette, spinach, and cucumber. Driftwood is beneficial both as a grazing surface and as a dietary supplement — Ancistrus regularly rasp biofilm and softer wood fibres. Protein-rich foods should be offered only in small quantities; an excess of animal protein is poorly tolerated and inconsistent with the natural periphyton-based diet.

Mating

No courtship observations specific to Ancistrus stigmaticus have been published or recorded in the hobbyist literature. As with most non-charismatic Peruvian Ancistrus, the species is absent from trade breeding records and has not been studied in a laboratory context.

Mating behaviour in Ancistrus broadly follows a consistent pattern. Males become strongly territorial around suitable cave sites — crevices, hollows beneath boulders, or sections of bamboo pipe in captivity — and guard these sites against rival males using the hooked interopercular odontodes as threat displays. A receptive female approaches the male's cave, and if accepted, enters to deposit eggs on the cave wall or ceiling. The male then bars the entrance and takes sole responsibility for the clutch.

Sexual dimorphism in the form of tentacle development on the male's snout allows experienced keepers to sex adults. Males tend to be slightly slimmer-bodied than gravid females when viewed dorsally. Multiple males in a confined space will engage in sustained aggression around cave territory; in sub-Andean species the level of aggression can be high, reflecting competition for limited crevice habitat in fast-current reaches.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Ancistrus stigmaticus has not been documented in the scientific literature or on specialist hobby platforms such as PlanetCatfish. The species has negligible trade presence, and verifiable breeding records are absent.

Breeding in the genus follows a well-documented pattern applicable to A. stigmaticus by inference. The male selects and defends a narrow, horizontal cave or crevice with a hard substrate ceiling on which adhesive eggs can be attached. The female enters, deposits a compact clutch of 30–80 (occasionally more) large, pale-yellow eggs, and then departs. The male guards the clutch, fanning water over the eggs with rhythmic pectoral fin strokes to maintain oxygenation and remove fungus. Eggs hatch in approximately 5–7 days at typical aquarium temperatures; fry are encumbered by a large yolk sac for several days and begin grazing within 1–2 weeks.

For this sub-Andean species, conditioning water to the cooler end of the recommended range (72–77 °F) and ensuring very high dissolved oxygen levels — as would be found in a fast-flowing Andean foothill river — are likely important preconditions for successful spawning. No clutch size or incubation period data specific to A. stigmaticus are available.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus stigmaticus is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade. It does not circulate under a popular common name and has no L-number designation. Occasional importation alongside wild-caught Peruvian loricariids is theoretically possible but undocumented. For practical purposes, hobbyists seeking a Peruvian Ancistrus of this body type will more commonly encounter A. dolichopterus, domesticated A. cf. cirrhosus forms, or undescribed 'LDA' bristlenose varieties.

Should specimens become available, care should mirror the sub-Andean environment: an aquarium of at least 20 US gal, with robust circulation and filtration providing high water movement and dissolved oxygen, a rocky hardscape with multiple caves and crevices, and a substrate of smooth cobbles and gravel. Temperature 72–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water are appropriate. Regular partial water changes of 20–30% weekly are important for maintaining water quality.

Diet should be algae wafer and vegetable-based, with driftwood available as a supplementary grazing surface. The species will be territorial toward conspecific males; females and juveniles can generally be housed together with adequate space. Compatible with peaceful mid-water fish of appropriate size. Because this species is so rarely encountered in captivity, any verified observations of behaviour, water preferences, or reproduction would be a meaningful contribution to knowledge.

Conservation

Ancistrus stigmaticus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List as a distinct species — it falls into the large category of Ancistrus not yet individually evaluated. For practical purposes it should be treated as Data Deficient in the absence of a specific assessment. The Río Huallaga drainage, its known home, is one of the more ecologically pressured river systems in the Peruvian Amazon.

The Huallaga valley has experienced several decades of intensive coca cultivation, associated deforestation, and the use of agrochemicals that reach the river system via runoff. Infrastructure development, including road construction along the valley, has contributed to sediment loading and watershed degradation. The middle Huallaga has been particularly affected, though the sub-Andean upper reaches — where A. stigmaticus likely occurs — are somewhat less altered than the lowland agricultural sections.

Hydroelectric development along Andean tributaries of the Peruvian Amazon represents a growing threat, as dams alter flow regimes, raise water temperatures in impounded sections, and block longitudinal connectivity important for rheophilic species such as Ancistrus. A species adapted to clear, fast-flowing sub-Andean rivers would be particularly vulnerable to increased sedimentation and reduced water velocity. Formal survey work and a specific IUCN assessment would be valuable contributions to this species' conservation status.
