Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus temminckii was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1840 in the monumental Histoire naturelle des poissons (volume 15, p. 514), co-authored with Georges Cuvier. The type locality is given simply as 'Suriname'; Boeseman (1972) later identified the holotype as RMNH 3123 and clarified the type-locality details. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination as Ancistrus temminckii (Valenciennes 1840), with the earlier combination Hypostomus temminckii and the synonym Plecostomus aculeatus both now subsumed.
The species name honours Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778–1858), the Dutch zoologist and Director of the Leiden Natural History Museum, who arranged and donated the type specimen. Temminck's name is therefore eponymous rather than descriptive — a common practice in 19th-century ichthyology when Cuvier and Valenciennes were systematically working through fishes deposited by museum correspondents across the globe.
Within Loricariidae, Ancistrus belongs to the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004). The genus is characterised above all by the interopercular odontodes — the 'bristles' — which are simple, unbranched, and soft-tipped in contrast to the rigid spines of some allied genera. The CoF distribution places this species in the Saramacca, Suriname, Commewijne and Maroni River basins of Suriname and French Guiana, with records also reported by Borstein et al. (2022) and Chuctaya et al. (2022) further expanding the confirmed occurrence data.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 4 in standard length (SL) — a modest size even by Ancistrus standards — making A. temminckii one of the smaller, slimmer members of the genus. The body is fully armoured in bony scutes arranged in the characteristic loricariid overlapping rows. Ground colour is dark brown to near-black or olive-grey, overlaid with pale cream to white spots of variable size that tend to fade and coarsen as fish age; the overall pattern is similar to many other Surinamese Ancistrus and is not reliably diagnostic without locality data.
The defining feature of all Ancistrus is the interopercular odontodes: fleshy, tentacle-like processes that emerge from the snout in mature fish. In males these develop into an elaborate branching fringe of soft tentacles spreading across the entire rostral disc, typically 10–20 or more processes reaching several millimetres in length. Females may develop shorter, less numerous tentacles along the snout margin, but never the full male crown. This sexual dimorphism is the most practical sexing tool available to aquarists.
The mouth is ventrally placed, with a broad oral disc bearing fine, bicuspid rasping teeth suited for scraping aufwuchs from hard surfaces. The teeth are noticeably finer and more numerous than those of the wood-eating Panaque lineage. The pectoral-fin spine is stout and bears fine odontodes; the caudal fin is slightly forked with elongated upper lobe rays in mature males, giving a subtly asymmetric profile.
Habitat
Ancistrus temminckii is native to the river systems of northern Suriname and adjacent French Guiana: confirmed from the Saramacca, Suriname, Commewijne, and Maroni (Marowijne) basins. These are lowland Guiana Shield rivers flowing north to the Atlantic across the coastal plain, transitioning from swift upland rapids over granite and laterite bedrock to slower, blackwater-influenced lowland channels.
In the Guiana Shield rivers, Ancistrus species typically occupy rocky rapids and boulder fields where current is strong and dissolved oxygen is high. Bedrock shelves, crevices, and root tangles beneath fallen trees provide both feeding surfaces and shelter from flow. Water chemistry varies with drainage: the Suriname River system includes whitewater reaches with moderate conductivity and near-neutral pH, while tributaries draining deeper forest carry softer, more acidic blackwater. FishBase records a temperature range of 70–75 °F and hardness up to 25 dH for this species, consistent with the varied character of Guiana lowland rivers.
The species has also been noted as introduced outside its native range, suggesting both its hardiness and the trade pressure on wild populations — though the extent and ecological impact of such introductions is not well documented in the primary literature.
Feeding
Ancistrus temminckii is primarily an aufwuchs grazer — it uses its broad oral disc and fine bicuspid teeth to rasp algae, biofilm (bacteria, diatoms, and protists), and fine organic detritus from hard substrates: rocks, roots, and submerged wood. Unlike the Panaque and Panaqolus lineages, Ancistrus is not a true xylophage; it scrapes the biofilm surface of wood rather than excavating the wood grain itself. Nonetheless, access to submerged wood enhances its welfare and provides a substrate-rich microhabitat in the aquarium.
In captivity the diet should reflect this herbivorous-omnivorous bias. Algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking discs, and blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, peas, sweet potato, and leafy greens — form the backbone of a sound diet. The fish will also readily consume small amounts of high-quality meaty foods: frozen or live daphnia, bloodworm, or small commercial sinking pellets. A varied diet prevents deficiencies and supports immune function, particularly important during the breeding season when nutritional reserves are drawn on heavily by guarding males.
Mating
Courtship in Ancistrus temminckii, like most of the genus, is driven principally by male territory establishment. Males select and aggressively defend cavities — natural crevices between rocks, hollow sections of wood, or purpose-made breeding tubes — and signal fitness via the elaboration of their tentacles, which reach maximum development during the breeding season or in the presence of females. Rival males will contest ownership of prime sites with vigorous displays and occasional physical skirmishes involving pectoral-spine locking.
A receptive female, recognisably rounder-bodied when viewed from above and distinguished by her shorter, less elaborate tentacles, will be enticed or shepherded into the male's chosen cavity. The male may court multiple females sequentially, and in larger enclosures a single well-fed male can successfully spawn with several females across a breeding season. Water temperature, water quality, and the availability of good spawning sites are the primary environmental triggers; simulating seasonal cues with modest temperature drops of 34–36 °F followed by warming, combined with a heavy water change, often stimulates spawning in captive pairs.
Breeding
All Ancistrus species are confirmed cave-breeders with paternal brood care — A. temminckii follows this pattern precisely. Once a female has deposited her eggs on the cave interior wall, the male remains at the entrance or inside, fanning the clutch continuously with his pectoral and caudal fins to oxygenate the eggs and remove any infertile or fungused ones.
Eggs are adhesive, relatively large for the fish's size, yellow to amber in colour, and typically number between 30 and 100 per clutch depending on the female's size and conditioning. Incubation at 73–77 °F takes approximately 5–7 days. The newly hatched larvae are initially immobile, attached by an adhesive organ to the clutch wall, and feed on their yolk sacs before becoming free-swimming juveniles that immediately begin rasping algae and biofilm. The male guards the fry for several days after they become free-swimming, until they begin to disperse independently.
Breeding A. temminckii is reliably achieved by providing multiple cave options (ceramic tubes, halved coconut shells, tight rock crevices), feeding a varied and protein-supplemented diet to conditioning adults, and performing regular partial water changes. The species has been kept and bred in European aquaria since at least the early 20th century, though precise captive-breeding records for this specific nominal species are sparse compared to the widely hybridised 'aquarium bristlenose' strains derived from A. cirrhosus and other species.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus temminckii is an excellent community fish: modest in size, peaceful toward non-conspecific tankmates, and genuinely useful as an algae-grazer on glass and hardscape. A single adult can be kept comfortably in a 60-litre aquarium, though 20–25 US gal provides more territory and better long-term health. A pair or small group benefits from at least 30 US gal with multiple cave options to reduce male–male tension.
Water parameters should reflect the Guiana Shield origin: temperature 70–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (up to ~15 dH). The species is adaptable within this range and not especially sensitive to water chemistry, but low ammonia and nitrite are non-negotiable — the loricariid respiratory system can compensate for reduced dissolved oxygen via aerial breathing, but chronic poor water quality degrades fins and immune function. Weekly partial water changes of 25–30% are strongly advisable.
The fish is compatible with most peaceful to moderately boisterous community species: tetras, rasboras, livebearers, corydoras, dwarf cichlids, and similarly sized plecos from different genera. Two males of the same species in a small tank will quarrel; one male and one or more females coexist well. Ancistrus generally leave plants alone, though fine-leaved carpeting plants or delicate mosses in direct contact with a grazing fish may be nibbled at; robust Anubias, Java fern, and similar tough species are entirely safe. The species is nocturnal but will emerge readily during the day in a well-structured tank with hiding places.
Conservation
Ancistrus temminckii is currently listed as Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List — a gap that reflects the difficulty of assessing the large and taxonomically complex Ancistrus genus rather than confirmed population health. The species' native range in Suriname and French Guiana is relatively intact compared to heavily deforested South American river systems, and both countries maintain significant proportions of primary forest cover over their Guiana Shield drainages.
Commercial collection for the ornamental trade has been ongoing for many decades, and A. temminckii appears in the European aquarium trade intermittently, though it is far less common than the mass-farmed long-fin and albino Ancistrus strains (which are predominantly derived from other species, likely A. cirrhosus). Captive breeding in the hobby is straightforward and well-established across the genus, meaning demand can in principle be met without sustained wild collection.
The Suriname river systems face environmental pressure from small-scale gold mining (ASGM) that generates mercury contamination and sedimentation — a documented threat to loricariid communities across the Guiana Shield. Long-term population monitoring for this and other narrow-range Surinamese Ancistrus species would benefit conservation planning.
