Ancistrus yanesha carries a pattern no other bristlenose can match — four parallel black stripes running unbroken from the head to the caudal fin, set against a paler body crossed by black vermiculations on the head. Hobbyists had known this distinctive Peruvian pleco under the DATZ code L267 since 1998; it took until late 2023 for science to catch up and give it a formal name.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus yanesha was formally described by Emanuel Bruno Neuhaus, Vanessa Meza-Vargas, Julio Ramírez Herrera, and Nathan K. Lujan in the Journal of Fish Biology (volume 104, number 4, pages 969–978, April 2024; published online December 2023; DOI: 10.1111/jfb.15637). The holotype was collected from Caño Pichanas, a tributary of the Palcazú River, in the town of San Pedro de Pichanas, Villa Rica District, Oxapampa Province, Pasco Department, Peru — within the Pachitea–Ucayali drainage of the upper Amazon basin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus yanesha as a valid species.

The aquarium trade had encountered this fish much earlier. Claus Schaefer assigned it the DATZ code L267 in 1998, nearly 26 years before its formal description — a common situation in the loricariid world, where the commercial collection of pleco diversity has consistently outpaced taxonomic revision. Hobbyists know it primarily as the L267 or the Four-Stripe Ancistrus, and the Pyjama Bristlenose name has also circulated in the trade.

Within Ancistrus — a genus of subfamily Hypostominae containing well over 70 named species and an unknown number still awaiting description — A. yanesha is distinguished most immediately by its unique colour pattern: four continuous, parallel black lateral stripes running from head to caudal fin, combined with black vermiculated lines covering the head. No other described Ancistrus shares this precise combination, making field identification unambiguous for those familiar with the genus.

Morphology

Ancistrus yanesha is a notably large member of its genus. The holotype measured 6 in standard length — a record size for Ancistrus — though typical wild and aquarium specimens are substantially smaller, usually 4–5 in (approximately 4–5 inches), with the German aquarium society IG BSSW reporting common trade sizes around 4.5 in. FishBase records a maximum of 6 in SL, consistent with the holotype.

The body carries the standard loricariid armour of interlocking bony scutes across the dorsal and lateral surfaces, with a soft, unplated ventral surface. The mouth is positioned ventrally — a ventral sucking disc edged with fleshy papillae and bearing fine, comb-like teeth suited for rasping biofilm and algae from hard substrates.

The colour pattern is the species' most immediately recognisable feature: four bold, parallel black lateral body stripes extending continuously from the snout region to the base of the caudal fin, overlaid on a lighter body ground colour. The head is additionally covered in black vermiculated lines, giving a reticulated or brain-like pattern on the snout and cheeks. Fins are pale with dark markings.

As in all Ancistrus, males develop the genus's characteristic branched fleshy tentacles (odontodes) on the snout and across the interopercular region. In A. yanesha these form the bushy "bristlenose" apparatus familiar to hobbyists. Females either lack tentacles or bear only minor, unbranched studs confined to the snout margin. Males are typically slimmer-bodied than females of equivalent size.

Habitat

Ancistrus yanesha is known from the Pachitea River drainage of Pasco Department, Peru, specifically the Palcazú River sub-basin — a tributary of the Pachitea, which itself drains westward into the Ucayali and ultimately the Amazon. The Palcazú flows through montane and premontane Amazonian forest in the Oxapampa Province, a region of high biodiversity and significant endemism in the eastern Andes foothills.

Field collections associated with the original description document medium to large streams with clear, slow-flowing water. Channel width at collection sites ranged from 20 to 25 metres, with depth of 0.5 to 1.0 metre at the time of collection (dry season). Substrates included sand, gravel, boulders, leaf litter, and submerged wood — a diverse mosaic typical of Amazonian foothill streams. The combination of clear water and structural complexity (rocks, wood, leaf litter) provides the conditions in which Ancistrus forage and shelter.

Hobbyist sources report aquarium water parameters consistent with Amazonian foothill origin: temperature 72–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. These figures align with the broader Palcazú–Pachitea system but derive from hobbyist experience rather than field measurements at the type locality.

Feeding

Like all Ancistrus, A. yanesha is a generalist biofilm and algae grazer. In its natural habitat — clear Amazonian foothill streams with diverse substrate — the species rasps periphyton communities from rock surfaces, submerged wood, and coarser gravel using its fine, comb-like teeth. The ventrally positioned sucking mouth enables sustained contact with hard surfaces while water current flows around the fish.

In the aquarium, hobbyists report acceptance of the standard Ancistrus diet: algae wafers and spirulina-based foods form the staple, supplemented with fresh or blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, peas) and occasional protein in the form of small live or frozen invertebrates. Like other large Ancistrus, individuals may graze the biofilm from driftwood surfaces, and providing wood in the aquarium is widely recommended — both for dietary contribution and for the species' apparent preference for wood-associated microhabitat in the wild.

The species does not appear to be a xylophage (dedicated wood-eater) in the manner of Panaqolus or Panaque, but will use wood as a foraging and refuge substrate.

Mating

Mating in Ancistrus yanesha has not been documented specifically in the scientific literature, but hobbyist reports confirm that captive breeding is achievable — an indication that natural courtship behaviour proceeds to completion under aquarium conditions.

Male Ancistrus are site-territorial during the reproductive period. A male in breeding condition develops fully elaborated, branching snout and interopercular tentacles and establishes ownership of a cavity — a hollow tube, crevice behind rocks, or section of driftwood — which he defends against rival males. Females assessing potential mates may inspect several sites; the male displays his tentacle development and the quality of the spawning cavity. After a period of male courtship activity inside the cave, the female enters and deposits eggs on the interior surface before departing, leaving the male in sole charge of the clutch.

Given A. yanesha's relatively large size for the genus, providing appropriately scaled cave structures — ceramic breeding tubes or sections of PVC pipe of at least 1.5–2 in diameter — is advisable when attempting captive breeding.

Breeding

Ancistrus yanesha is regularly kept and bred by hobbyists, particularly in Germany and among European loricariid enthusiasts, and captive reproduction is considered achievable with appropriate setup. The IG BSSW (Interessengemeinschaft Barben, Salmler, Schmerlen und Welse e.V.) documents hobby breeding of L267.

Breeding follows the genus pattern: the male selects and defends a tight cavity, courts the female, and after spawning assumes sole responsibility for brood care. Adhesive eggs are deposited on the cavity ceiling or wall, and the male fans them continuously with pectoral fins and tail to maintain oxygen supply, removing any that fail to develop. Incubation in related Ancistrus at 75–79 °F typically spans five to seven days. Fry emerge as miniature adults, already bearing the distinctive four-stripe pattern in juvenile form, and begin grazing biofilm surfaces rapidly.

Conditioning adults on a varied diet with regular large water changes — and optionally a modest temperature fluctuation to mimic seasonal cues — is the approach most commonly recommended by breeders. Providing multiple cave sites reduces male stress and may encourage a dominant male to spawn with more than one female. The species' relatively large adult size requires a tank of at least 25 US gal for a breeding pair.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus yanesha (L267) has been in the European hobby since at least the late 1990s and is occasionally imported from Peru; tank-raised specimens are produced by specialist breeders. It is not among the most commonly available bristlenoses — A. cf. cirrhosus and related trade 'common bristlenose' forms vastly outnumber it in shops — but it is obtainable through specialist loricariid dealers and aquarium society trades.

A minimum tank of approximately 25 US gal (roughly 45 × 45 × 19.5 in footprint) is appropriate for a single individual or pair given the species' potential adult size. Moderate current, high dissolved oxygen, and weekly partial water changes are all recommended. Water parameters: temperature 72–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. The species is not especially sensitive within this range, but clean, stable conditions reduce stress and support the immune system — particularly important for wild-caught imports adjusting to captivity.

Decoration should include substantial driftwood, smooth and rough-surfaced rocks, and cave structures. The four-stripe pattern functions as camouflage against dappled light on wood and leaf litter, and the fish will use caves as daytime retreats. Plants are generally tolerated; robust species (Anubias, Java fern anchored to wood) are best alongside a grazer this size.

A. yanesha is peaceful toward other species. Males may be intolerant of each other in confined quarters — limiting territorial conflict — but can coexist if the tank is large and caves are plentiful. Compatible with peaceful community fish: small to medium tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and similar non-aggressive species.

Conservation

Ancistrus yanesha has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The species was formally described only in late 2023, and it is typical for newly described taxa to remain unassessed for several years after description while evaluators gather distribution and population data.

The Pachitea–Palcazú drainage in Pasco, Peru, where A. yanesha is known to occur, lies within the Oxapampa Province — a region of the Peruvian Andes foothills that supports significant forest cover and biodiversity, including populations of indigenous Yanesha communities. However, the area is not without pressure: agricultural expansion, colonisation, and associated deforestation have affected stream habitats across the Pasco and Junín regions. Clear, slow-flowing foothill streams like those described for the type locality collection are sensitive to riparian deforestation, which increases sedimentation and water temperature.

The species is named for the Yanesha people (see Etymology), and the habitat where it lives overlaps with the territories of those indigenous communities. Sustaining both the cultural and ecological integrity of the Palcazú valley is thus intertwined with the species' long-term security.
