A rare bristlenose discovered in the remote headwaters of the Ventuari River in Venezuelan Amazonia, Ancistrus yutajae was formally named only in 2019 and remains essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. Its Endangered status reflects one of the most geographically restricted ranges in the entire genus — a single river tributary accessible only by light aircraft.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus yutajae was described by de Souza, Taphorn, and Armbruster in 2019 as part of a comprehensive revision of northwestern South American Ancistrus in Zootaxa (volume 4552, pages 1–67). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the species under genus id 406, species id 75690, with no synonyms on record. It belongs to subfamily Hypostominae within Loricariidae, nested within the speciose genus Ancistrus — a group of armoured catfishes collectively known as bristlenoses for the branched dermal tentacles that develop on the snouts and interopercular regions of mature males.

The species epithet yutajae is a latinised genitive of Yutajé, the river at the type locality. The Yutajé River is a remote headwater tributary of the Ventuari, itself a major right-bank tributary of the upper Orinoco in Amazonas State, Venezuela. Naming the species after its type river is a standard convention in Ancistrus systematics and accurately captures both the geographic origin and the extremely restricted known distribution. No hobbyist codes or L-numbers have been assigned to this species.

Morphology

Ancistrus yutajae reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in (SL), placing it in the mid-range of the genus. Like all Ancistrus, it carries the characteristic loricariid armour of overlapping bony scutes covering the head and trunk. The body is typically depressed (flattened ventrally), with a broad, rounded head and a subterminal mouth adapted for clinging to and scraping hard substrates.

The most distinctive feature of mature males is the elaborately branched tentacles — fleshy dermal projections — that develop on the rostrum (snout tip) and along the interopercular margin (cheek). These are the defining feature of the genus and are absent or very poorly developed in females. The specific pattern and branching complexity of these tentacles varies among Ancistrus species and between individuals, and the 2019 revision used tentacle characteristics alongside meristics and pigmentation to distinguish A. yutajae from its congeners.

Beyond the sex-specific tentacles, sexual dimorphism follows the usual loricariid pattern: males tend to be somewhat more slender in body profile, while females, when gravid, are noticeably broader when viewed from above. Detailed coloration data for this species are sparse in the literature; the 2019 description provides the definitive meristic and morphological account (Figure 28 of the Zootaxa paper).

Habitat

The type locality is the Yutajé River at the end of the airstrip at Campamento Yutajé, a tributary of the Ventuari River, at approximately 6.146°N, 61.492°W in Amazonas State, Venezuela. This is a remote location in the Guiana Highlands region, reachable primarily by small aircraft, which underscores how geographically isolated the known population is.

The Ventuari River drains forested upland terrain in southwestern Venezuela and flows into the upper Orinoco. Its headwater tributaries such as the Yutajé are typically clear-water or blackwater streams running over rocky substrates, with moderate to swift current in riffles and quieter pools in bends. Water is likely soft and mildly acidic to neutral — consistent with Guiana Highlands drainages generally — but no specific physicochemical measurements for the Yutajé at the collection site have been published. Microhabitat for Ancistrus in such rivers is typically rocky riffle zones and submerged wood, where the fish cling and forage for biofilm and algae.

Feeding

Ancistrus are primarily aufwuchs feeders — they scrape periphyton (biofilm, algae, diatoms, and associated microorganisms) from hard surfaces using their specialised ventral mouths. The dentition of Ancistrus is adapted for rasping rather than the deep-wood gouging seen in wood-eating genera such as Panaque and Panaqolus. Submerged rocks and driftwood surfaces coated in biofilm are the natural feeding substrate.

Like other Ancistrus, A. yutajae likely also consumes detritus, decaying plant matter, and small invertebrates incidentally. In the aquarium, members of this genus accept a broad range of foods: sinking algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and occasional protein supplements. Driftwood in the tank is beneficial both as a feeding surface and as a behavioural resource. Specific feeding data for A. yutajae are not documented, but the biology of the genus is well characterised and applies by extension.

Mating

No mating observations for Ancistrus yutajae have been published, and the species is not known to have been kept or spawned in captivity. Courtship behaviour in Ancistrus generally follows a consistent pattern across the genus. Males establish and defend cavities — natural crevices between rocks, undercut banks, or hollow sections of wood — and signal readiness through display of their snout tentacles and interopercular odontodes, which are more elaborate in dominant males. Rival males contest territories through lateral displays and, in close-range encounters, through interlocking of the interopercular spines.

Females assess males and their chosen cavity sites before entering to spawn. The female's decision is influenced by cavity quality and the male's condition; in congeners, males in prime territories have been observed spawning with multiple females across a season. The general Ancistrus mating system is therefore best characterised as a resource-defence polygyny mediated by cavity ownership.

Breeding

No captive breeding records exist for Ancistrus yutajae. Based on the biology of closely related Ancistrus species, the reproductive mode is expected to be cavity spawning with paternal brood care — the universal pattern in the genus. The male would select and defend a tight cavity, the female would deposit adhesive eggs on the interior walls, and the male would remain with the clutch to fan the eggs with his pectoral fins, maintaining oxygenation and removing fungused eggs.

Incubation periods in Ancistrus congeners at tropical temperatures typically span five to ten days, after which fry emerge as yolk-sac larvae that remain in the cavity for several more days before dispersing. Clutch sizes in comparable mid-sized Ancistrus species range from a few dozen to over a hundred eggs, varying with female size and condition. Given the Endangered status of A. yutajae and the inaccessibility of its type locality, wild-caught specimens are extremely unlikely to appear in the hobby, and captive experience with this species is essentially nil.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus yutajae is not available in the aquarium trade and is not established in captive collections. Any individual encountered would almost certainly be a mislabelled specimen of another Ancistrus species — the genus is taxonomically complex and misidentification is common in the hobby. Formal identification requires examination of meristics and tentacle morphology against the 2019 Zootaxa revision.

If correctly identified specimens were to become available through legitimate channels — such as a scientific captive-assurance programme given the species' Endangered status — husbandry guidance from related Guiana Highlands Ancistrus would provide the best baseline: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.2), temperature in the 75–81 °F range consistent with upland Orinoco tributaries, strong filtration and oxygenation, rocky decor with hiding crevices, and a diet centred on biofilm and vegetable matter. Wood and smooth rocks for grazing are standard Ancistrus requirements.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus yutajae as Endangered (EN) in December 2022, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii). These criteria reflect a very restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy — the species is known only from the Yutajé River, a single headwater tributary of the Ventuari in Venezuelan Amazonia — combined with inferred ongoing decline in habitat quality.

The remote location of the Yutajé provides some incidental protection from direct anthropogenic disturbance, but the species' extreme range restriction means that any localised event — drought, sedimentation, illegal mining, or watershed alteration — could threaten the entire known population. Gold mining activity (illegal and semi-legal) is a documented pressure in parts of the Ventuari watershed and adjacent Guiana Highlands drainages.

The species is not established in captivity and has no ex-situ safety net. Its formal description was published only in 2019, meaning it has had limited exposure to conservation attention. Monitoring and formal protection of the Yutajé drainage would be the highest-priority measures for safeguarding this species.
