Named for the llanero music of the Colombian Orinoco plains, Chaetostoma joropo is a recently described rubber-nose pleco whose range spans the Meta and Guaviare sub-basins of Colombia — and whose Vulnerable listing on the IUCN Red List reflects the mounting pressure on the rocky piedmont streams it inhabits.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma joropo was described by Ballen, Urbano-Bonilla, and Maldonado-Ocampo in 2016, published in Zootaxa (volume 4105, number 2, pages 183, Figures 1–2, 3 left; doi:10.11646/zootaxa.4105.2.6). The type locality is given as the Río Güejar in the upper Guaviare River basin, Meta department, Colombia (Mesetas, Reserva municipality). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Chaetostoma joropo.

The specific epithet joropo honours the joropo, a traditional music and dance form of the Colombian and Venezuelan Llanos — the Orinoco plains across which this species' rivers flow. The name connects the fish to its biogeographic and cultural landscape.

No hobbyist L-number or C-number has been assigned to this species. It belongs to subfamily Hypostominae within Loricariidae, and its distribution in the Colombian Orinoco piedmont places it within a hotspot for Chaetostoma diversity that has been the subject of active ichthyological survey work, including the broader distribution study by Urbano-Bonilla et al. published in ZooKeys 733:65–97 (2018).

Morphology

The maximum recorded size for C. joropo is 5 in standard length (SL; approximately 4.9 in), making it one of the larger members of the genus. This figure comes from PlanetCatfish records cross-referenced with the original description; FishBase did not carry a length entry for this species at the time of writing.

The body form is the typical Chaetostoma plan: heavily armoured with bony scutes, a broad depressed head with a ventrally positioned sucking disc, and interopercular odontodes behind the gill cover. Diagnostic negative characters separate it from superficially similar genera: no plates on the abdomen, no plates on the snout edge, no fleshy tentacles. These characters distinguish Chaetostoma from Ancistrus (which has snout tentacles) and from some Hypostomus (which have abdominal plates).

Sexual dimorphism in C. joropo follows the genus-wide pattern. Males develop a broader head and narrower ventral profile than females, and the pelvic fins of males are disproportionately enlarged — the same functional adaptation seen in C. machiquense, where the oversized pelvic fins serve to retain sperm against the egg clutch in fast water during fertilisation.

Habitat

Chaetostoma joropo is distributed across the Meta and Guaviare sub-basins of the Colombian Orinoco drainage. The Meta sub-basin records include the upper Meta, Cusiana, Casanare, Tocoragua, and Caja rivers; the Guaviare sub-basin records include the upper Guaviare, Ariari, and Güejar rivers. The species has been photographed at the Serranía de La Macarena — a biodiverse inselberg massif at the piedmont transition between the Andes and the Llanos.

Wild water parameters recorded across collection sites span a considerable range: pH 7.1–8.6 (slightly basic overall), dissolved oxygen 6.1–9.5 mg/L, conductivity 10.4–258.0 µS, and temperature 70–86 °F. This breadth likely reflects the topographic variation within the species' range — from cool, high-conductivity Andean foothill streams to warmer, lower-conductivity piedmont rivers. However, all sites share the characteristic Chaetostoma microhabitat: shallow, fast-flowing water over rocky substrates.

The species is rheophilic and appears to prefer current-exposed cobble and boulder habitats consistent with high dissolved oxygen demands.

Feeding

Chaetostoma joropo is an algae scraper and periphyton grazer. The sucking disc and robust dentition are specialised for rasping the biofilm and algal mat from rock surfaces in swift water — the same functional ecology seen across the genus and in other rheophilic loricariids.

In captivity, the diet should centre on algae-based foods: sinking algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables including courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and leafy greens. Strong current over smooth stones and pebbles in the aquarium will encourage natural biofilm development that the fish will graze continuously. High dissolved oxygen is important not only for respiration but appears correlated with appetite and activity in fast-water loricariids.

PlanetCatfish notes that C. joropo has more stringent water quality demands than many plecos, particularly regarding oxygenation — a care consideration that influences feeding behaviour as well as general health.

Mating

Courtship in C. joropo has not been described in detail in the literature consulted. Based on genus-wide patterns, males are expected to establish territories around suitable spawning sites — flat rock surfaces or the underside of stable cobbles in fast-flowing sections of stream.

The enlarged pelvic fins of males play the same role reported for C. machiquense: during fertilisation in fast-moving water, the male inverts himself against the substrate and deploys the oversized pelvic fins over the egg clutch to retain milt against the eggs despite current dispersal. This adaptation is characteristic of fast-water Chaetostoma breeders and is likely shared by C. joropo given its rheophilic ecology.

No aquarium observations of territorial behaviour or courtship sequences for this species appear in the sources consulted.

Breeding

Breeding behaviour in C. joropo follows the fast-water substrate-spawning pattern documented for the genus. Spawning occurs on the underside of a flat object in shallow, turbulent water. The female deposits an adhesive egg clutch directly on the underside of the selected surface; the male then positions himself inverted against the clutch, pelvic fins deployed to retain sperm during fertilisation and subsequently to shelter the eggs from current.

The male remains with the clutch through incubation, fanning the eggs to maintain oxygen supply and removing any infertile or fungused eggs.

No specific captive breeding records — clutch size, incubation period, or fry development data — appear in the sources consulted for C. joropo. Achieving captive breeding would require replicating the key parameters of the wild habitat: high flow, high dissolved oxygen, smooth flat stones for spawning, and appropriate temperature within the recorded wild range of 70–86 °F.

In the aquarium

Chaetostoma joropo is not a standard trade species and carries no hobbyist catalogue number. It may appear in specialist collections alongside other Colombian Orinoco loricariids.

This species has been noted to have more demanding water quality requirements than many pleco species commonly kept in aquaria — a point flagged explicitly in hobbyist literature. High dissolved oxygen is the primary concern: at the upper end of its recorded temperature range (approaching 86 °F), water holds significantly less oxygen than at 72–75 °F, and a well-oxygenated, strongly circulated aquarium is non-negotiable. Powerheads, venturi aerators, or spray bars are recommended to maintain near-saturation oxygen levels, especially in summer or in warmer climates.

The tank should replicate the rocky piedmont stream: a substrate of rounded cobbles and pebbles, flat stones stacked to create caves and crevices, and vigorous flow from the filter or supplementary circulation. Fine-grained substrates should be avoided. The natural pH range (7.1–8.6) spans from neutral to moderately alkaline, so the species is not dependent on soft acidic water; standard dechlorinated tap water in good condition is generally suitable.

For group keeping or breeding attempts, a footprint of at least 80 × 15.5 in is advisable to provide multiple territories. C. joropo is not aggressive toward dissimilar species but intraspecific territorial behaviour among males is expected.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma joropo as Vulnerable (VU) on 14 December 2020, under criterion B2ab(iii). The assessment is based on a restricted area of occupancy (AOO) combined with evidence of continuing decline in habitat quality within the Colombian Orinoco piedmont.

The species' range is centred on the Colombian Orinoco piedmont — the transition zone where Andean rivers descend onto the Llanos plains through the departments of Meta and Guaviare. This region faces substantial and ongoing deforestation pressure, particularly driven by expansion of cattle ranching and agricultural frontiers that have accelerated in the post-conflict period following the 2016 peace agreement, when previously inaccessible areas opened to settlement. Deforestation in Andean piedmont catchments causes sedimentation of the rocky stream habitats on which C. joropo depends: fine sediment buries cobble substrates and suppresses the periphyton growth that is the species' food base.

The Serranía de La Macarena, within which C. joropo has been recorded, is a national park and UNESCO biosphere reserve, providing some habitat protection within the range. However, the broader Meta and Guaviare piedmont remains under pressure. The VU listing is a substantive conservation signal for a species described only in 2016 and barely known outside specialist ichthyology — it underscores the fragility of the Colombian Orinoco's loricariid fauna and the urgency of catchment-level habitat protection in this region.
