Described only in 2024, Loricaria thomasi is among the most recently named whiptail catfishes — a long-bodied Loricariinae from the Orinoco basin, distinguished from every known congener by an extraordinary buccal tuft: a dense cluster of elongate papillae rising from a fleshy protuberance on the roof of the mouth.

Taxonomy & naming

Loricaria thomasi was formally described by Provenzano and Sabaj in 2024 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 168, pages 211–220). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises it as a valid species within the genus Loricaria Linnaeus, 1758.

The genus Loricaria is the nominate genus of the subfamily Loricariinae and one of the oldest loricariid names — coined by Linnaeus himself in the tenth edition of Systema Naturae. Loricariinae is one of the five major subfamilies of Loricariidae, characterised by the greatly depressed and elongated body, a long whip-like caudal filament in many species, and the absence of an adipose fin.

Within Loricaria, L. thomasi is distinguished from all described congeners by its buccal tuft — a medial cluster of 25 to 29 simple, elongate papillae supported by a fleshy protuberance from the anterior roof of the buccal cavity, internal to the premaxillae. This structure is unique among known members of the genus at the time of description and provided the primary diagnostic character separating the new species from its closest relatives.

Morphology

Loricaria thomasi attains a maximum recorded size of 7.5 in standard length (SL). The body conforms to the classic Loricaria bauplan: strongly depressed, oval in cross-section, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle typically ending in an elongated upper caudal ray. The dorsal fin carries 7 soft rays; the anal fin carries 5.

The most distinctive morphological feature is the buccal tuft — a dense tuft of 25 to 29 simple, elongate papillae arising from a fleshy protuberance on the anterior roof of the mouth, internal to the premaxillae. This structure, visible when the mouth is gape-open, immediately separates L. thomasi from congeners examined at the time of description.

Beyond the buccal apparatus, the species shares the general loricariid armour of overlapping bony scutes covering the dorsal and lateral surfaces. Like all loricariids, the mouth is ventrally positioned and adapted for scraping substrate. The genus is known to be capable of facultative air-breathing, a trait shared with many loricariiid lineages inhabiting seasonally variable tropical waters.

Habitat

Loricaria thomasi is known from the Orinoco basin, with records from Colombia and Venezuela. The Orinoco system encompasses a wide range of aquatic environments, from Andean-fed whitewater rivers to blackwater tributaries draining the Guiana Shield.

Members of the genus Loricaria are typically benthic, occupying sandy or fine-substrate river bottoms and areas of accumulated leaf litter in moderate to slow current. They are demersal fishes, resting on or near the substrate during the day and becoming more active at night. Tropical freshwater conditions prevail across the known range.

Because L. thomasi was described only in 2024, detailed water-chemistry data from type-locality field collections have not yet been widely reported in the secondary literature.

Feeding

Gut examination of Loricaria thomasi specimens revealed detritus and chironomid larvae, including representatives of Cryptochironomus and Pelomus (Chironominae) as well as Coelotanypus (Tanypodinae). This diet profile places the species at trophic level 2.5 (±0.2), consistent with a detritivore and invertebrate-picker rather than a strict algivore or scraper.

The ventral, disc-shaped mouth of Loricaria is well suited to vacuuming fine organic material and picking small invertebrates from soft substrate. Members of the genus do not show the highly keratinised teeth of the wood-eating panaquine lineages; instead they possess flexible, finely cusped teeth suited to softer food material.

In the aquarium, similar whiptail loricariids accept sinking tablets, spirulina wafers, blanched vegetables, and live or frozen small invertebrates such as bloodworm and Tubifex. A sandy substrate allows natural foraging behaviour.

Mating

No direct observations of courtship behaviour in Loricaria thomasi have been published as of the date of description. Based on well-documented patterns in congeners and the broader Loricariinae, sexually mature males of Loricaria develop hypertrophied odontodes on the head and along the pectoral-fin spines during the reproductive season — a secondary sexual character used in male–male competition and courtship display.

Females tend to be broader-bodied when gravid. Males establish and defend spawning territories, typically in sheltered areas near substrate, roots, or debris. The male selects and prepares the spawning site and plays the dominant role in subsequent parental care.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Loricaria thomasi were available at the time of writing — the species is too recently described (2024) to have an established hobby presence. Based on the extensively documented biology of congeners, breeding in Loricaria follows a paternal egg-guarding strategy: the male fans and guards the adhesive egg mass after spawning, maintaining water circulation across the clutch until hatching.

In many Loricaria species and in the closely related Rineloricaria, the male remains in close contact with the eggs, using fin movements to prevent fungal colonisation and anoxic conditions. Fry of similar species emerge as miniature adults and begin feeding on biofilm and fine particulate matter almost immediately.

Aquarists keeping L. thomasi may reasonably apply husbandry strategies used for other small Loricaria species: a soft sandy substrate, subdued lighting, shaded shelter sites, clean well-oxygenated water, and conditioning with varied live and frozen foods.

In the aquarium

Loricaria thomasi is not yet established in the ornamental trade; as a species described in 2024 from the Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela, it is likely encountered only through specialist importers dealing in wild-caught South American catfishes.

For aquarists who obtain specimens, husbandry should follow best practices for small whiptail loricariids. A soft, fine sandy substrate is important — these fish spend much of their time resting directly on the bottom, and coarse gravel can cause abrasion to the ventral surface. Water should be clean, well-filtered, and moderately well-oxygenated, with temperature in the tropical range appropriate to Orinoco-basin species.

Diet should include sinking foods: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and occasional live or frozen chironomid larvae or bloodworm, reflecting the invertebrate component found in wild gut contents. Decor should include driftwood, leaf litter, and sheltered areas consistent with the benthic lifestyle of the genus.

Conservation

Loricaria thomasi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The species was described in 2024 and is too recently named for a formal assessment to have been conducted.

The Orinoco basin, where L. thomasi is known to occur across Colombia and Venezuela, is one of South America's major river systems and supports high aquatic biodiversity. The basin faces pressures including deforestation, agricultural runoff, artisanal gold mining in parts of Venezuela, and proposed hydroelectric development. Whether L. thomasi is locally abundant or restricted in range is not yet documented.

No trade or fisheries interest has been recorded for this species.
