A broadly distributed rubber-nose pleco of the upper Amazon's Andean foothills, Chaetostoma taczanowskii haunts fast-flowing, oxygen-rich rivers across the Huallaga, Marañón, and Urubamba drainages of Peru — grazing algae and aufwuchs from sun-lit boulders with the flat, sucker mouth that defines its rheophilic genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma taczanowskii was formally described by Franz Steindachner in 1882 in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien (volume 19, number 19, page 177). The type locality is placed in the upper río Huambo basin, specifically the Río de la Tortora, at approximately 6°26'S, 77°18'W, within the upper Amazon system of Peru. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Chaetostoma taczanowskii as the valid combination; the earlier spelling Chaetostomus taczanowskii is treated as a synonym.

The genus Chaetostoma belongs to the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae within the family Loricariidae. Members of Chaetostoma are distinguished from the superficially similar Ancistrus by the complete absence of fleshy, branched tentacles on the snout, by a lack of plates on the snout margin, and by the absence of abdominal plates — characters that, combined with the stout depressed body and enlarged pectoral-fin spine, mark them as dedicated rheophiles. Interopercular odontodes (small spines just behind the gill-cover) are present in both sexes.

The species epithet honours Władysław Taczanowski (1819–1890), the Polish zoologist and ornithologist who worked extensively on the fauna of Peru and made natural history collections from the Andean foothills during the same era Steindachner was describing new species from that region.

Morphology

Adults of C. taczanowskii are among the larger members of their genus, reaching up to 6.5 in total length (approximately 6.5 in SL in FishBase records). The body follows the Chaetostoma plan: strongly depressed, broad across the head, and narrowing to a slender caudal peduncle, with a ventrally flat surface well-adapted to pressing against smooth boulders in current. The dorsal and lateral surfaces are armoured with overlapping bony scutes; the belly is naked.

The head is wide and rounded in dorsal view, with the mouth positioned ventrally and equipped with numerous small bicuspid teeth arranged in a broad arc — well-suited to scraping algae and biofilm from hard substrates. The lips are fleshy and expanded, forming an effective suction disc that holds the fish against rock surfaces even in strong flow.

Sexual dimorphism follows the genus-wide pattern: males develop a larger, broader head and a slimmer ventral profile compared with females of equivalent body length. The pelvic fins of males are disproportionately enlarged — a feature thought to assist fertilisation in fast-flowing water, where the pelvic girdle may cup over the egg clutch to aid sperm delivery. Females tend toward a fuller, rounder ventral profile, most evident in ripe individuals.

Habitat

Chaetostoma taczanowskii occupies fast, clear, oxygen-rich rivers of the Andean foothills and adjacent lowland drainages in Peru. Its confirmed range spans the Huallaga, Marañón, Ucayali, and Urubamba river systems — all draining from the eastern Andes into the upper Amazon. These are predominantly cool, turbulent, well-oxygenated waters running over cobble, boulder, and bedrock substrates.

As a member of the rheophilic Chaetostoma guild, the species is strongly associated with riffles and rapids where current velocity is high, substrate is hard and often algae-encrusted, and dissolved oxygen is near saturation. The genus as a whole is adapted to life in the benthic boundary layer of fast water, where the flat ventral surface and powerful pectoral spines allow the fish to hold position without expending energy actively swimming. Like other Chaetostoma, this species is capable of facultative air-breathing — a useful adaptation where seasonal drought can reduce river volume and temporarily deplete dissolved oxygen.

Feeding

Chaetostoma taczanowskii is an aufwuchs and algae grazer. In its native fast-water habitats it uses the broad sucker mouth to rasp periphyton — the mixed community of diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and associated invertebrates that coats exposed rock and boulder surfaces in well-lit, high-current sections of river. This biofilm is nutritionally dense and forms the core of the diet in the wild.

In the aquarium, the species does well on a diet dominated by vegetable matter: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and sweet potato. Natural algae growth on tank glass and décor is readily grazed. Occasional protein supplementation with small invertebrate foods is acceptable, but the diet should remain predominantly plant-based to reflect the species' natural dietary profile.

Mating

Courtship behaviour in C. taczanowskii follows the general Chaetostoma pattern inferred from genus-level observations. Males establish and defend rock crevice or cavity territories, using their interopercular odontodes in lateral displays and occasional physical contests with rival males. The enlarged pelvic fins of males are thought to play a role during spawning, potentially cupping over the egg mass to assist sperm contact in the turbulent, high-current environments where this genus naturally breeds.

No specific field observations or documented captive breeding accounts are available in the sources consulted for this species. Details given here reflect genus-level biology; species-specific courtship behaviour may differ.

Breeding

Chaetostoma species are understood to be substrate spawners that deposit adhesive egg clutches on the underside of flat rocks or within shallow crevices in fast-flowing water. The male remains upside-down against the clutch, fanning the eggs and guarding the site. This brood-care mode — paternal, cavity-oriented, and adapted to high-current conditions — is consistent across the genus and has been observed in captive Chaetostoma.

No captive breeding records for C. taczanowskii specifically have been reported in the sources consulted. Given its larger adult size relative to many congeners, it would require a well-oxygenated tank with strong filtration, cool temperatures, and appropriate spawning sites (flat stones with crevice access) to replicate the conditions under which breeding might occur. Aquarists wishing to attempt breeding should treat species-level husbandry data as sparse and proceed with general Chaetostoma principles.

In the aquarium

At up to 6.5 in TL, C. taczanowskii is a larger Chaetostoma and requires more space than its smaller congeners. A tank of at least 55 US gal with a long footprint is appropriate for a single adult; more is better for a group. The priority in setup is replicating the fast, well-oxygenated riverine conditions the species demands: a high-flow filtration system, adequate surface agitation, and water temperatures in the cooler tropical range.

Substrate should consist of smooth river cobbles and flat stones that the fish can rest on and graze. Rock arrangements creating shallow cave-like spaces beneath flat stones will serve both as resting sites and potential spawning sites. Softer substrates or heavily planted tanks with stagnant zones are not well-suited to this species.

Water quality must be excellent; the genus is sensitive to elevated nitrate and particularly to low dissolved oxygen. Regular partial water changes are essential. The species coexists peacefully with fish that occupy different zones of the tank — mid-water schooling fish or other bottom dwellers that do not compete for the same rock-grazing territory are suitable companions. Intraspecific aggression between males of this or similar Chaetostoma is possible; multiple individuals should be kept only in large tanks with ample territory.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma taczanowskii as Least Concern in April 2014, based on a distribution spanning multiple drainages of the upper Amazon system in Peru (Huallaga, Marañón, Ucayali, Urubamba). No major threats were identified at the time of assessment, and the species is not known to be commercially exploited for the ornamental trade.

The Andean foothills rivers it inhabits face growing pressure from agricultural expansion, road construction causing sedimentation, and deforestation of riparian zones — factors that can degrade the clean, fast, cobble-substrate habitats on which rheophilic Chaetostoma depend. The species' relatively broad range across multiple drainages provides some resilience, but localised populations in headwater streams could be vulnerable to catchment-scale changes. The 2014 assessment is now more than a decade old; updated survey data would be valuable given the pace of land-use change in Andean Peru.
