Taxonomy & naming
Rhadinoloricaria laani was described by Nijssen and Isbrücker in 1988 and is treated as a valid species by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). The parenthetical authority — (Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1988) — indicates that the species was originally placed in a different genus and has since been recombined into Rhadinoloricaria, a genus of slim-bodied whiptail catfishes within the subfamily Loricariinae of the suckermouth-armoured catfish family Loricariidae.
FishBase records the eponymy: the species honours Louis André van der Laan of the Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam, recognised by the authors for supplying photographs of the fishes. Beyond the original description and the standard taxonomic checklists, the species has attracted very little literature. The principal modern reference is Ferraris (2003), the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America.
Morphology
Rhadinoloricaria laani reaches a maximum recorded length of 5 in standard length (FishBase, based on a male or unsexed specimen). As a member of the Loricariinae, it has the elongate, depressed body and attenuated caudal peduncle — the 'whiptail' form — characteristic of the subfamily, with the body encased in rows of bony dermal plates and a ventral suckermouth.
Detailed meristic and colour-pattern characters lie in the original 1988 description and are not reproduced in the readily available secondary sources; no data on live coloration is published here. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for this species.
Habitat
The species is a freshwater, demersal, tropical fish of the Orinoco drainage, recorded from the Meta River basin in Colombia — part of the Orinoco Llanos ecoregion of the FEOW classification. As a bottom-dwelling loricariine it would be expected to associate with sandy or detritus substrates in flowing water, but specific microhabitat data (current, substrate, depth, water chemistry) have not been published for R. laani.
Feeding
No direct feeding study exists for Rhadinoloricaria laani. FishBase assigns a model-based trophic level estimate of 2.5, consistent with the detritivorous and aufwuchs-grazing habits typical of whiptail loricariines, which rasp biofilm, algae and fine organic matter from submerged surfaces. This remains an inference from the genus and subfamily rather than an observation of this species; dietary data are sparse.
Mating
No data on courtship or mating behaviour have been published for Rhadinoloricaria laani.
Breeding
No data on reproduction, spawning mode, clutch size or parental care have been published for Rhadinoloricaria laani. Many loricariines are substrate or crevice spawners with paternal egg-guarding, but this has not been confirmed for this species and is not asserted here.
In the aquarium
Rhadinoloricaria laani has no recorded presence in the ornamental-fish trade and carries no L-number. There is no published aquarium husbandry experience for the species, so no care recommendations can be given. Any keeping notes would have to be extrapolated from better-known Loricariinae rather than from data on this fish itself.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rhadinoloricaria laani as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 7 October 2020. CITES and CMS list the species as Not Evaluated. The Least Concern listing reflects the absence of evidence for significant range decline or major threats across its Orinoco-basin distribution, rather than detailed population monitoring.
