Known in the trade as L303 and occasionally as the red pepper pleco for the warm tones sometimes visible in its spotted livery, Hypostomus macushi inhabits the swift, rocky rivers that straddle the Guyana–Brazil border — the ancestral territory of the Macushi people, for whom the species is named. It is a modestly sized Hypostomus with large, widely spaced spots and notably spoon-shaped teeth, reaching around 6.5 in in standard length.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus macushi was described by Armbruster and de Souza in 2005, with the account published in Zootaxa (number 920, page 3, Figure 1). The type locality is the Ireng River, 4 mi west-southwest of Karasabai, within the Takutu–Negro River drainage, Guyana (coordinates: 04.01957°N, 059.60170°W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus macushi Armbruster & de Souza, 2005 as the valid name, with no synonyms listed.

The species sits within the subfamily Hypostominae of Loricariidae and was assigned to Hypostomus on the basis of its overall morphology and its position in the phylogenetic framework established by Armbruster's broader loricariid work. No reclassification has occurred since the original description.

In the aquarium trade the species circulates under the L-number designation L303, assigned by the German fishkeeping press before the formal description was published — a common situation for South American loricariids imported ahead of their scientific description. The trade name 'Red Pepper Pleco' alludes to the reddish or orange tint sometimes visible in life, though this colouration is variable and not always present.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 6.5 in SL according to FishBase (maximum recorded 6.5 in SL). PlanetCatfish records a smaller figure of 5.5 in SL; the discrepancy likely reflects the measurement of a smaller sample or a different growth series, and FishBase's figure is taken as the reference here.

The body is armoured in the standard loricariid pattern of interlocking bony scutes. Ground colouration in life is pale greyish to light tan, overlaid with large, widely spaced dark spots that extend across the head, body, and fins. In some individuals and lighting conditions a reddish or orange suffusion is visible across the body, giving rise to the trade name. The spotting pattern — large, discrete, well-separated — is a useful character distinguishing H. macushi from fine-spotted or reticulate congeners.

A notable dental character is the large, spoon-shaped (spatulate) teeth noted in the original description — larger and more strongly spatulate than in many Hypostomus — suggesting an enhanced capacity for scraping hard substrates. This morphology is typically associated with herbivory and biofilm grazing on rock surfaces.

Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: specific data are not recorded for H. macushi in available sources, but males in Hypostomus typically develop evertible interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and odontodes along the dorsal surface of the pectoral spines during the reproductive season.

Habitat

Hypostomus macushi is distributed across a network of rivers along the Guyana–Brazil border: the Ireng River (type locality), Rupununi River, Essequibo River system, Takutu River, and rivers of the Negro/Amazon drainage including the Branco (Roraima, Brazil) and Nhamundá. This distribution spans two major drainage systems — the coastal Essequibo (draining to the Atlantic via Guyana) and the Amazon (via the Negro and Branco) — joined by the seasonal Rupununi Portal, a low-lying floodplain connection between the two that is inundated during wet season and allows fish movement.

The microhabitat is associated with rocky substrates in swift-flowing water — typical for a species with strong spatulate teeth well-suited to scraping algae and biofilm from boulder and bedrock surfaces. The rivers of southern Guyana and adjacent Roraima are generally clear to slightly tea-coloured (blackwater-influenced), soft, and slightly acidic, draining ancient Precambrian shield geology. No specific water chemistry data have been published for collection sites of H. macushi.

As with all Hypostomus, facultative air-breathing is a genus-level trait that would aid survival during low-water periods when dissolved oxygen may drop in warmer, shallower pools.

Feeding

Feeding behaviour specific to H. macushi has not been studied in the field. The large, spoon-shaped teeth described by Armbruster and de Souza are a clear morphological signal of herbivory and hard-substrate grazing: this tooth form is well adapted for rasping epilithic algae and periphyton from rock surfaces, which is the primary feeding mode expected for this species.

In the aquarium, a diet dominated by plant-based sinking foods is appropriate: spirulina wafers, algae discs, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, peas) form the dietary backbone. Biofilm and algae growing naturally on rocks and glass should be allowed to develop and will be actively grazed. Occasional protein supplementation with sinking pellets or thawed invertebrate foods can be offered, though heavy protein feeding is not in keeping with the species' herbivore profile.

Mating

Mating behaviour has not been documented for H. macushi in the field or in the aquarium. Only two keepers and four spot records are listed on PlanetCatfish as of the time of cache collection, and no breeding report has been filed.

Within Hypostomus, males typically establish territories around rocky crevices, boulder outcrops, and submerged wood in flowing water. The rocky swift-water habitat of H. macushi in the Guiana Shield rivers provides abundant crevice and cave structure in the form of fissures and overhangs in bedrock. Males display elongated cheek odontodes to rivals and potential mates during the reproductive season.

Breeding

No breeding reports for H. macushi exist in the available literature or in the PlanetCatfish database. The species has been kept by a small number of aquarists, but captive spawning has not been publicly documented.

By genus-level analogy, H. macushi is expected to be a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, consistent with the Hypostomus breeding pattern: eggs are deposited adhesively on the interior surface of a rocky crevice or cave, and the male fans and guards the clutch until the fry are free-swimming. Hobbyists attempting to breed this species should provide suitable rocky cave structures, condition adults on a varied plant-based diet, and consider mild temperature fluctuation to mimic the seasonal cycle of its Guiana Shield rivers.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus macushi is an uncommon aquarium species, available occasionally through specialist loricariid importers and collectors of L-number catfishes. Its trade designation of L303 gives it a place in the catalogued L-number system, which aids identification and connects it to a small community of dedicated hobbyists.

At up to 6.5 in SL, H. macushi is a manageable mid-sized pleco suitable for a tank of 55–80 US gal with robust filtration. Rocky substrate, flat slate or smooth boulders, and cave-forming rock arrangements are strongly recommended to provide both shelter and grazing surfaces consistent with the species' swift-water, rocky-bottom natural habitat. Smooth or fine gravel substrate is preferable to coarse material that might abrade the unarmoured ventral surface.

Water parameters should reflect the soft, slightly acidic character of Guiana Shield rivers: temperature 75–82 °F, pH modestly below neutral (6.5–7.2 is a reasonable working range given the blackwater influence in the natural range), and low to moderate hardness. Strong water movement and high oxygen levels are appropriate for a fish adapted to swift rocky rivers. Weekly water changes of 25–30% are recommended.

H. macushi is generally peaceful toward other species and can be kept with other community fish appropriate to its water chemistry preferences. As with all Hypostomus, conspecific males may show territorial aggression; if multiple individuals are kept, ensure sufficient cave space to allow each fish an exclusive territory.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus macushi as Least Concern (assessed 12 November 2020). The assessment cites the species' distribution across multiple river drainages in Guyana and adjacent Brazil as a buffer against extinction risk, and identifies no major threats at the time of the evaluation.

The Guiana Shield rivers that H. macushi inhabits are among the least degraded river systems in South America — their remote headwaters in southern Guyana and Roraima remain largely intact, with low human population density and limited agricultural conversion compared to other Amazonian regions. The Rupununi Wetlands of Guyana, which connect the species' Essequibo and Amazon range components, are a recognized biodiversity hotspot with some formal protection.

Ornamental collection of L-number loricariids occurs in this region, but the trade volume for H. macushi specifically appears low based on the limited number of registered keepers and absence of widespread availability. Continued monitoring of collection pressure would be prudent as demand for unusual L-number species can increase rapidly.
