A slender, big-eyed dwarf suckermouth catfish of the Amazon basin, Hypoptopoma steindachneri belongs to a genus of elongate, surface-clinging loricariids built quite differently from the bulky plecos most aquarists picture. Named for the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner, it is a small, peaceable aufwuchs-grazer rather than a wood-eater.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypoptopoma steindachneri honours Franz Steindachner (1834–1919), the prolific Austrian ichthyologist of the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Hypoptopoma steindachneri as the valid name within the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae; it should not be confused with the unrelated Pareiorhaphis steindachneri or Rineloricaria steindachneri, which are different genera that happen to share the same eponymous epithet.

The genus Hypoptopoma was the subject of a major revision by Aquino and Schaefer, who diagnosed its species on a suite of plate and canal characters. Diagnostic features cited for H. steindachneri include two or more paranasal plates between the pararostral plates and the second infraorbital, a single plate between the canal-bearing plate and the first three infraorbitals, a subdivided canal-bearing plate, and a laterally constricted basipterygium. The genus belongs to the Hypoptopomatinae, one of the loricariid subfamilies distinct from the wood-eating Hypostominae.

Morphology

Hypoptopoma steindachneri reaches about 4 in standard length (SL). The body is notably elongated and somewhat flattened — the typical Hypoptopoma form — with large, laterally and ventrally placed eyes that give the genus its distinctive 'looking-down' appearance. The vertebral count is 26.

Among the characters recorded in the genus revision, the caudal-fin ray tips are darkly pigmented, forming a vertical band across the tail. Mature males are distinguished by a membranous outgrowth between the pelvic spine and the first branched pelvic ray — a useful sexing character. As facultative air-breathers, members of the genus can gulp atmospheric air at the surface to supplement gill respiration when dissolved oxygen runs low.

Habitat

The species occurs in the Amazon River basin of South America. It is a freshwater, demersal fish of tropical waters, living close to the substrate and to submerged surfaces such as plant stems, leaf litter, and woody debris where it clings and grazes.

FishBase characterises the genus as inhabiting slow-moving to still tropical freshwater. Precise locality-by-locality water chemistry for H. steindachneri is not extensively published, but its membership in the demersal Amazonian fauna implies warm, soft to moderately soft water typical of the basin's whitewater and clearwater systems.

Feeding

Like other Hypoptopoma, H. steindachneri is an aufwuchs grazer rather than a wood-eater. It rasps the biofilm of algae, diatoms, microorganisms, and fine detritus that coats submerged surfaces — plant stems, broad leaves, sunken wood, and rock. Its elongate, mobile mouth and downward-set eyes suit a fish that works over flat surfaces feeding on this thin organic film. No species-specific dietary analysis has been published, but the genus is consistently reported as a microphagous grazer.

Mating

No detailed account of courtship or mating behaviour has been published for Hypoptopoma steindachneri. The presence of a sexually dimorphic pelvic membrane in mature males indicates the usual loricariid pattern of internal-to-external sexing differences, but the specific reproductive behaviour of this species has not been documented.

Breeding

There is no published breeding report for H. steindachneri. Some Hypoptopomatinae are known to deposit adhesive eggs on the undersides of broad leaves or on hard surfaces, but in the absence of direct observation this cannot be stated for H. steindachneri specifically. Its reproductive mode remains undescribed in the accessible literature.

In the aquarium

Hypoptopoma steindachneri has little established presence in the ornamental trade, though the genus as a whole includes species that occasionally reach hobbyists as slender, peaceful 'twig'-like suckermouths. Care for any Hypoptopoma centres on stable, clean, warm freshwater with gentle to moderate flow, plenty of broad-leaved plants and flat surfaces to graze, and a mature tank with established biofilm — these grazers can starve in a too-clean, brand-new aquarium. They are peaceable and unsuited to boisterous tankmates. Specific husbandry data for H. steindachneri itself, however, is not documented.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypoptopoma steindachneri as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 9 October 2020. The Least Concern listing reflects a wide distribution across the Amazon basin and the absence of identified major threats to the species. As with much of the Amazonian fish fauna, broad-scale pressures such as deforestation, sedimentation, and hydrological alteration affect the basin generally, but at present the species is not considered to be at risk of extinction.
