Taxonomy & naming
Hypoptopoma thoracatum was described by Albert Günther in 1868 in the Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum, published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 4, volume 1, number 6, article 56, page 477). The type locality is Xeberos, upper Amazon River, Peru — a historical collection point on the Huallaga/Marañón drainage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypoptopoma thoracatum Günther, 1868 as the valid name; the synonym Hypoptopoma bilobatum has been applied to the same taxon.
The genus Hypoptopoma was established to accommodate a group of small, flattened loricariids with laterally placed eyes, a concave dorsal head profile, and a characteristic caudal-fin spot pattern used to distinguish species. Günther's 1868 paper established the genus and this species simultaneously, making H. thoracatum the type species of Hypoptopoma. The genus belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae within the diverse family Loricariidae — the armoured suckermouth catfishes.
Within the genus, species are distinguished primarily by the shape and extent of the elongated dark spot on the median caudal-fin rays. In H. thoracatum, this spot is notably NOT connected to the lanceolate plates at the base of the caudal fin, and it extends over more lower-lobe rays than upper-lobe rays, covering roughly one-half to more than two-thirds of the ray length — a combination diagnostic for this species and explicitly contrasting with the condition in H. guianense.
Morphology
Adults of Hypoptopoma thoracatum reach approximately 3 in standard length (SL), equivalent to roughly 4.5 in total length (TL), placing it among the larger members of the genus. Body weight in one FishBase reference specimen reached 15.5 g. The body is stocky, markedly flattened ventrally, and covered in rows of overlapping bony scutes that form the characteristic loricariid armour. The head is wide, with a distinctly concave dorsal profile — the broad, depressed head gives the genus its common name of Flat Head Dwarf Sucker.
The most diagnostic morphological feature — critical for distinguishing H. thoracatum from congeners in the aquarium trade — is the caudal-fin spot: an elongated patch of black melanophores along the branched caudal-fin rays. In this species the spot is NOT distinctly connected to the lanceolate plates at the base of the fin, and it covers more rays in the lower lobe than in the upper lobe, extending over one-half to more than two-thirds of the ray length. The vertebral count is 27.
The eyes are positioned laterally on the sides of the head rather than on the dorsal surface — a key feature of Hypoptopoma and a useful field character separating it from many other small loricariids. The suckermouth disc is well developed for rasping biofilm from hard surfaces. FishBase notes the species as a facultative air-breather, enabling short-term survival in oxygen-depleted waters.
Sexual dimorphism is not described in the available literature for this species.
Habitat
Hypoptopoma thoracatum is distributed across the Amazon River basin in South America. The type locality — Xeberos, upper Amazon (Huallaga/Marañón drainage), Peru — represents the westernmost edge of a range that extends broadly through Amazonian freshwaters. FishBase characterises the species as tropical, freshwater, and demersal.
Water chemistry parameters documented for the species (FishBase; PlanetCatfish) span pH 5.0–7.5, hardness 4–15 dH, and temperature 73–81 °F — a range consistent with the soft, warm, slightly acidic to neutral Amazonian waters typical of its basin. This relatively wide tolerance reflects the hydrological diversity of the Amazon system, which ranges from whitewaters rich in suspended sediment and near-neutral pH to blackwater tributaries with extremely low pH and negligible hardness.
Microhabitat is demersal; the species associates with submerged surfaces — plant stems, submerged logs, and vegetated banks — where biofilm and periphyton accumulate. The wide, flat body and lateral eye placement are consistent with a life spent pressed against submerged objects in moderate-current or slack-water environments.
Feeding
Hypoptopoma thoracatum is an algae grazer and aufwuchs feeder, using its suckermouth to rasp periphyton — the community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and associated organic matter — from submerged plant surfaces, wood, and other hard substrates. PlanetCatfish records the species' diet as primarily algae, consistent with the general feeding strategy of Hypoptopomatinae.
In the aquarium, the diet should be built around plant-based staples. Algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking pellets form the nutritional backbone; these should be supplemented with blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, spinach) offered in the evening when the fish is most active. A healthy growth of natural algae on aquarium glass and décor is beneficial and will be grazed constantly. Protein-rich foods are not a dietary requirement and should be offered only occasionally.
Mating
No specific courtship observations are documented for Hypoptopoma thoracatum. The genus's life history in the wild remains poorly studied. Among small Hypoptopomatinae, courtship is assumed to involve the male inspecting and selecting spawning surfaces in the territory and engaging in close-following behaviour toward receptive females, but this has not been confirmed for H. thoracatum specifically.
The laterally placed eyes, which give Hypoptopoma a wide visual field on both sides simultaneously, may play a role in social signalling and mate assessment, though this is speculative in the absence of behavioural studies.
Breeding
No captive breeding reports are on file for Hypoptopoma thoracatum. PlanetCatfish lists no breeding accounts for this species despite the existence of aquarium photographs confirming it has been kept in captivity. The lanceolate body plate structure and the caudal-fin spot pattern are better documented than any reproductive biology.
The reproductive mode of Hypoptopoma is not established in the available literature. Given the subfamily's general biology, spawning on plant surfaces or other flat substrates is plausible, but hobbyists attempting to breed this species are working without a documented protocol. Conditioning on a varied, plant-based diet and providing stable water conditions within the documented chemistry range (pH 5.0–7.5, 73–81 °F, soft to moderately hard water) would be the logical starting point.
In the aquarium
Hypoptopoma thoracatum has an established presence in the aquarium hobby — PlanetCatfish holds eight photographs on record, suggesting it reaches the trade with some regularity, though it is less common than Otocinclus species and most Corydoras. Its adult size of up to 3 in SL (roughly 4.5 in TL) places it in a mid-range for loricariids, larger than Otocinclus but smaller than most Ancistrus and far smaller than common plecos.
The aquarium should provide dense planting or natural algae growth on wood and glass, as this is the primary feeding resource and the species grazes continuously throughout the day. A soft substrate and moderate current with good oxygenation reflect the Amazonian conditions. Minimum tank size for a small group would be 15–20 US gal; the peaceful disposition makes it a suitable resident with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish — small tetras, rasboras, and dwarf cichlids are compatible.
Water parameters should remain within the documented range: pH 5.0–7.5, hardness 4–15 dH, temperature 73–81 °F. The species can tolerate moderately hard, neutral water and does not require blackwater chemistry, though it will thrive in soft, slightly acidic Amazonian conditions. Regular partial water changes maintain water quality; the fish is sensitive to nitrate accumulation at prolonged elevated levels.
Facultative air-breathing means the fish can supplement gill respiration by gulping atmospheric air at the surface — an adaptation to warm, oxygen-depleted environments — but this behaviour in captivity usually signals suboptimal oxygenation and should prompt a check of filtration and surface agitation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypoptopoma thoracatum as Least Concern in October 2020, citing its wide distribution across the Amazon River basin and the absence of identified direct threats. The Amazon basin, despite facing ongoing deforestation, agricultural expansion, and increasing hydroelectric development, remains largely intact as a functioning freshwater ecosystem across much of its extent, and a wide-ranging Amazonian species faces substantially lower extinction risk than one with a restricted range.
The ornamental fish trade collects H. thoracatum in modest numbers. No evidence of population-level impacts from wild collection has been documented. The species is not yet established in captive breeding programmes in the way that Otocinclus species are, meaning aquarium specimens are likely wild-caught; this is worth monitoring as trade volumes change.
