One of the most geographically distinctive Hypostomus in southeastern Brazil, the gold speckled pleco is a river fish of the Paraíba do Sul system — a drainage that flows not toward the Amazon but into the South Atlantic north of Rio de Janeiro. Its golden-yellow spots on a dark ground colour make it immediately recognisable, and its appearance in the hobby under the LDA035 code has kept it on the want-lists of pleco enthusiasts for decades, even though captive breeding remains unrecorded.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus auroguttatus was described by Rudolf Kner in 1854 in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien (volume 7, p. 269 [p. 19 of the separate], Plate 2 figure 3), from syntypes of unknown provenance collected by Johann Natterer and Johann Jakob Heckel during their Brazilian expeditions. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Kner as the formal author but notes that Natterer and Heckel contributed the original material; Armbruster (2004) cited the authority as 'Kner ex Natterer & Heckel'. A synonym is Plecostomus luetkeni Steindachner, 1877, described from the Paraíba do Sul system and subsequently placed in synonymy.

The distribution was restricted by Weber (2003) to the Paraíba do Sul River basin, Brazil — a key clarification, since earlier records from Argentina and Uruguay (under the luetkeni synonym) were re-evaluated by Koerber (2014) and Litz & Koerber (2014) as misidentifications. The type locality is listed as 'unknown' in the original description, but the synonym luetkeni provides a confirmed geographic anchor to the Paraíba do Sul drainage and its tributaries in Rio de Janeiro state.

The current status is valid as Hypostomus auroguttatus Kner 1854, placed in the tribe Hypostomini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster 2004). The species is included in the LDA (Das Aquarium) number series as LDA035, assigned during the 1990s by European hobbyist journals before the formal name was consistently used in trade.

Morphology

Hypostomus auroguttatus is a moderately large Hypostomus, reaching approximately 11.5 in standard length (SL) per PlanetCatfish data; FishBase records a maximum total length of 13.5 in. Like all Hypostomus, the body is robust and strongly dorsoventrally flattened, broadest across the pectoral girdle, covered in overlapping bony scutes arranged in lateral and ventral series. The snout is rounded in dorsal view; the ventral oral disc is large, with many rows of fine, elongate, bicuspid teeth that are adapted for scraping aufwuchs from rock.

The most immediately striking feature is the colour pattern: a dark brown to blackish-brown or dark olive ground with numerous small to medium, bright golden-yellow to ochre spots covering the dorsal and lateral surfaces, the head, and the fins. The ventral surface is paler and spotting may be reduced there. The spots are generally round to slightly irregular and are distributed fairly evenly, without forming stripes or blotches. Fin membranes — particularly the dorsal — display the same gold-on-dark pattern. This pattern is consistent with the LDA035 trade material and is the basis for the common name 'Gold Speckled Pleco'.

The caudal fin is distinctly forked with a slight asymmetry (lower lobe slightly longer in some individuals). The dorsal fin has one spine and typically 7 branched rays (I,7), which is consistent with the broader Hypostomus pattern. The pectoral spine is long and stout.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle: breeding males may show more pronounced odontodes on the pectoral spines and along the snout margin, and gravid females appear noticeably wider-bodied when viewed from above.

Habitat

Hypostomus auroguttatus inhabits the Paraíba do Sul River basin — a geographically significant river system that drains the southeastern Brazilian escarpment and flows northeast into the South Atlantic north of Rio de Janeiro city. This places the species firmly within Brazil's Atlantic Forest ecoregion, in a drainage system entirely separate from Amazonian and Orinoco-basin fish assemblages.

FishBase describes the species as inhabiting 'big and rapid waters with rocky bottom' — a concise but accurate characterisation of the Hypostomus microhabitat in the Paraíba do Sul. The river system transitions from fast, rocky upper reaches in the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar highlands to a broader, lower-gradient valley as it descends toward the coast. H. auroguttatus is principally a fish of the larger river channels with swift current over clean, rocky substrate — contrasting with some Hypostomus species that tolerate lentic or turbid conditions.

The Paraíba do Sul system is subtropical to tropical at its lower elevations. Water temperatures in the valley sections range roughly 64–79 °F depending on season and altitude, with cooler conditions in the higher headwater zones. pH is near-neutral to slightly acidic, and hardness is variable but generally soft to moderate — typical of the granitic and gneissic geology of southeastern Brazil's Atlantic watershed.

Koerber & Weber (2014) clarified that Argentine records of H. auroguttatus (attributed to Perugia 1891) were likely misidentifications, and the species should be considered confined to Brazil, probably within the Paraíba do Sul drainage and its tributaries in Rio de Janeiro state.

Feeding

As a Hypostomus, H. auroguttatus is primarily an aufwuchs grazer: it uses its large sucker-like oral disc and rows of fine bicuspid teeth to rasp algae, diatoms, and biofilm from submerged rock surfaces in its preferred fast-water habitat. The genus also includes species with harder, more molariform teeth adapted for scraping harder substrates (the 'cochliodont' group), but H. auroguttatus belongs to the typical, fine-toothed mainstream of Hypostomus — a generalist scraper.

In the wild, the diet would include epilithic algae, periphyton, diatom mats, fine organic detritus, and the small invertebrates (midge larvae, copepods, ostracods) embedded in the biofilm. The rapid rocky-river habitat of the species would supply ample epilithic algae where light penetrates the water column.

In the aquarium, the species should receive a predominantly plant-based diet: algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato, peas). The periodic offering of protein-rich live or frozen foods is acceptable, but should remain a supplement rather than a staple. Being a large fish, H. auroguttatus produces substantial waste and will appreciate access to a well-stocked tank with active algal growth on the glass and hardscape.

Mating

No specific field observations or aquarium breeding reports exist for H. auroguttatus. The species carries no breeding reports on PlanetCatfish, and detailed mating behaviour has not been published in the ichthyological literature. What follows is inferred from the broader genus.

Hypostomus is a cave-spawning genus across all studied species: males claim and defend rocky cavities — natural undercut banks, cavities under boulders, or root chambers in the wild — and court females to deposit eggs within. Competitive male–male interactions involve body-locking and pectoral-spine engagement. The male fans and guards the clutch until hatching; whether he continues guarding through early fry development varies.

In aquaria, achieving mating in a large Hypostomus requires a large tank — given the 28+ cm adult size of H. auroguttatus, a minimum of 65 US gal is appropriate for a breeding pair or trio — with substantial cave furnishings (large clay pots, dense driftwood tangles, or commercial breeding caves scaled to the fish's body size). A simulated seasonal cycle with cooler temperatures (64–68 °F) in winter months followed by a gradual warming, combined with increased water changes, may help trigger spawning conditioning.

Breeding

Captive breeding of H. auroguttatus has not been documented on PlanetCatfish or in the accessible hobbyist literature. Given that the species is rarely imported and appears primarily on European pleco enthusiasts' wishlists under the LDA035 code, the absence of breeding records is unsurprising rather than indicative of particular difficulty.

Based on the general Hypostomus breeding template — cave spawning, moderate to large clutch size, paternal brood care — the practical requirements would be: a large aquarium (65 US gal minimum) with powerful filtration, a strong water-change regime, appropriate cave structures scaled to adult body size, and a temperature cycle that drops to 64–68 °F in winter before warming to 75–79 °F in spring. Some Hypostomus species from subtropical drainages (including parts of the Paraíba do Sul system) reproduce in the austral spring–summer (October–January), triggered by rising temperatures, increasing day length, and the arrival of seasonal rains.

The species' regional isolation in the Atlantic Forest drainage suggests it has been separated from Amazonian Hypostomus lineages long enough to have evolved specific reproductive cues. Hobbyists who manage to acquire this species and keep it long-term would provide a genuine contribution by documenting any spawning attempts, whether or not eggs hatch.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus auroguttatus (LDA035) occupies a curious niche in the hobby: it is well-known by name and number among serious pleco collectors, appears on wish-lists, and its attractive gold-spot livery makes it desirable — but actual specimens in captivity are rare, and aquarium maintenance information is correspondingly sparse.

At up to 11–13.5 in it is a substantial pleco, comparable in adult size to the common H. plecostomus group. A minimum tank size of 55–65 US gal is appropriate, though larger is always better for a fish of this body mass. Filtration must be powerful: a large Hypostomus produces considerable biological waste, and high water quality is essential. A canister filter rated for twice the tank volume, supplemented by a powerhead or surface skimmer for oxygenation, is appropriate. Water temperature 64–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard — all consistent with the Paraíba do Sul provenance.

The rocky-rapid habitat preference means the aquarium should feature significant stone hardscape — larger boulders, flat flagstones, and crevice-forming arrangements. Open sandy areas and some driftwood complete the setup. H. auroguttatus is described by FishBase as found in 'big and rapid waters with rocky bottom', so moderate to strong current from a powerhead is beneficial.

The species is not known to be aggressive toward non-Hypostomus tankmates, but like all larger plecos it can be territorial toward conspecifics in restricted quarters. Appropriate companions would include similarly sized, robust mid-water fish of the Paraíba do Sul or related drainages (larger Astyanax, Brycon, characid species), or other community fish that can tolerate moderate current.

Aquarists in Europe occasionally encounter LDA035 through specialist importers; it is not a regular retail item. The taxonomic clarifications of 2019 confirm that this fish is a product of the Atlantic Forest freshwater system, not an Amazonian species — a distinction worth noting for context and export-permit purposes.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus auroguttatus as Least Concern in 2018, based on its occurrence across the Paraíba do Sul River basin and the Paraná River drainage (Brazil) as recorded at the time. The CoF (Sarmento-Soares et al. 2024) confirms continuing records in the Paraíba do Sul basin; Koerber & Weber (2014) clarified that previous Argentine records should be excluded, which actually narrows the confirmed range to Brazil.

The Paraíba do Sul is one of the most modified rivers in Brazil — supplying water to the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, traversing the highly urbanised and industrialised São Paulo–Rio de Janeiro axis, and draining a watershed that has lost the vast majority of its original Atlantic Forest cover. Water quality concerns, heavy metal and industrial pollution, urban and agricultural effluent, dam construction, and gravel extraction from river beds all affect the system. For a species specialised to fast, clean, rocky-bottomed river sections, these pressures are real even if the species is presently widespread enough to qualify as Least Concern.

FishBase also notes that the taxonomy and nomenclature of H. auroguttatus may still require revision: Steindachner (1881) proposed a restricted type locality for the original material, and Zawadzki et al. noted that H. auroguttatus auctorum may require a replacement name if it proves to be a senior synonym of H. luetkeni. This nomenclatural uncertainty should not affect conservation assessments in practice but warrants monitoring.
