Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus chrysostiktos was described by Birindelli, Zanata and Lima in 2007 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 5, number 2, pages 173–180). The type locality is the rio Paraguaçu basin, Bahia State, Brazil — a river system draining the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Brazil before emptying into the Baía de Todos os Santos near Salvador. The species is an endemic of this drainage and has not been recorded elsewhere.
The species epithet is formed from two Greek roots: *chrysos* (gold) and *stiktus* (spotted), together meaning 'gold-spotted'. The name is an unambiguous reference to the bright yellow spots on living specimens — a character so visually striking that it provides an immediate identification cue in the field and serves as one of the primary diagnostic features in the formal description.
Within the genus Hypostomus, H. chrysostiktos is distinguished from all congeners by the combination of conspicuous yellow spots and an elevated count of 10–11 branched dorsal-fin rays — most Hypostomus species carry fewer branched dorsal rays, making this count a useful meristic marker alongside the colour pattern. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus chrysostiktos Birindelli, Zanata & Lima, 2007 as the valid name. The IUCN Red List assessed the species as Least Concern in November 2018.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum recorded standard length of 10 in (SL). The body plan follows the typical Hypostomus blueprint: dorsoventrally flattened, armoured with interlocking bony scutes, and equipped with a large ventrally positioned oral disc. The dorsal fin is prominent, arising near the mid-body and capable of being locked erect by the first unbranched ray — a defensive posture used when wedged in crevices.
The most immediately recognisable feature is the colour pattern: bright yellow to gold spots distributed across a darker base colour on the head, body, and fins. In living fish the spots are reported as particularly vivid, fading somewhat in preserved specimens (as is common in colour-based diagnoses in the family). The 10–11 branched dorsal-fin rays are the key meristic separator from most congeners within the genus.
Like other Hypostomus, H. chrysostiktos is capable of facultative air-breathing — ingesting atmospheric oxygen via specialised stomach tissue when dissolved oxygen is low, an adaptation useful in the warm, sometimes sluggish dark-water stretches it inhabits. No specific data on sexual dimorphism are published for this species; the standard Hypostomus pattern of male odontode development on the interopercle during the breeding season is likely.
Habitat
Hypostomus chrysostiktos is restricted to the rio Paraguaçu basin, Bahia State, northeastern Brazil. The rio Paraguaçu drains an area influenced by the semi-arid caatinga biome before descending to coastal lowlands; its upper and middle reaches are rocky and seasonally variable in flow, while vegetation cover along the banks can be sparse compared to the wetter Atlantic Forest streams farther south.
FishBase records the species from altitudes of 164–2172 ft above sea level across the basin, indicating it uses a broad elevational range within its restricted geographic footprint. Habitat is described as dark-water stretches of rivers with rocky substrates — the dark water colour suggesting dissolved organic matter (tannins and humic acids) typical of slower, vegetated sections or streams draining organically rich soils, and the rocky substrate reflecting the species' dependence on hard surfaces for grazing and refuge.
The basin is a relatively small, isolated drainage, which is consistent with the endemism of H. chrysostiktos: river fish restricted to a single, geographically limited river system have had limited opportunity for dispersal and speciation across multiple basins.
Feeding
Hypostomus chrysostiktos is presumed to share the algae-scraper and periphyton-grazer feeding mode characteristic of the genus. The broad oral disc armed with bicuspid teeth is structurally adapted for rasping biofilm — the complex community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine detritus that colonises submerged rock surfaces and woody debris. The long, convoluted intestine typical of Hypostomus supports extended digestion of plant-cell-wall material through microbial fermentation.
No specific dietary observations for H. chrysostiktos are published. Given its rocky-substrate habitat in dark-water stretches, the primary food source in nature is almost certainly aufwuchs on rock faces, supplemented by organic detritus accumulating in crevices and eddies.
In an aquarium setting, the standard Hypostomus diet applies: algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, spinach), and sinking catfish pellets. Natural rock and wood surfaces promoting biofilm growth benefit any Hypostomus. The diet should be predominantly plant-based; heavy protein supplementation is not recommended.
Mating
No specific mating behaviour has been documented for Hypostomus chrysostiktos. The species' IUCN assessment (Least Concern, 2018) and endemic status in a relatively small river basin suggest a naturally limited population, but no ecological studies detailing reproductive behaviour in the wild have been published.
By analogy with the genus, territorial males likely defend suitable crevice or cavity sites during the breeding season, with exaggerated odontode development serving as an indicator of male condition. In the rio Paraguaçu's rocky-substrate reaches, suitable spawning sites would include undercut ledges, deep crevices between boulders, and hollow sections within submerged wood.
Seasonal rainfall patterns in the Paraguaçu basin — characterised by a relatively dry period followed by wet-season influx — probably drive reproductive timing, with temperature drops, increased flow, and improved water quality acting as proximate cues. No captive breeding records are documented.
Breeding
No confirmed breeding records for Hypostomus chrysostiktos in captivity are known from the available literature. The species does not appear to have entered the ornamental trade in significant numbers, and husbandry experience is minimal.
The genus Hypostomus is a cave or crevice spawner across all well-studied members; H. chrysostiktos is presumed to follow this pattern. The male would select and defend a tight cavity, the female would deposit adhesive eggs on the internal surface, and the male would guard and fan the clutch through incubation and early fry development. Clutch size in comparably sized Hypostomus species (around 10 in SL) is typically in the hundreds of eggs.
Any future captive breeding attempts should prioritise a large aquarium with robust filtration, adequate rocky cave structures or ceramic tubes, a diet varied between plant-based foods, and a period of simulated seasonal variation (slight temperature reduction, increased water changes) to mimic the rio Paraguaçu's wet-season cues.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus chrysostiktos is not established in the ornamental fish hobby and is rarely if ever available in trade. The species has no L-number and its vivid gold-spot pattern — the most immediately attractive character — has not been sufficient to drive significant collection for export from Bahia.
At up to 10 in SL, this is a mid- to large-sized pleco requiring a spacious aquarium: 80 US gal or more for a single adult, with strong biological filtration, regular water changes, and good oxygenation. Rocky substrate with numerous crevices and overhangs is important both behaviourally and nutritionally. Driftwood, while not as critical as it is for xylophagous species, provides additional grazing surface and refuge.
Water chemistry should lean toward the soft, slightly acidic to neutral range consistent with dark-water Bahian rivers: pH roughly 6.0–7.0, low to moderate hardness. Temperature information from field sources is not available, but the subtropical to tropical Brazilian interior context suggests 72–82 °F as a working range. Good water quality is essential — benthic loricariids produce substantial nitrogenous waste and are sensitive to elevated ammonia and nitrite.
The gold spotting should intensify under good conditions and a varied diet; stress, poor water quality, or monotone lighting tend to dull the pattern. Any specialist pleco keeper obtaining this species would be working largely without published husbandry precedent.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus chrysostiktos as Least Concern in November 2018. The assessment acknowledges the species' endemic distribution within the rio Paraguaçu basin, Bahia, but concluded that no critical decline or threat sufficient to warrant a threatened category was evident at the time of evaluation.
Endemism in a single, geographically bounded river system is inherently a vulnerability. The rio Paraguaçu basin in Bahia State has experienced pressures associated with agricultural expansion into the caatinga and cerrado transition zone, dam construction (the Pedra do Cavalo reservoir on the lower Paraguaçu affects hydrological continuity), and water abstraction for agriculture in a region prone to drought. Changes in flow regime, sedimentation, and thermal dynamics can all affect benthic loricariids reliant on rocky-substrate biofilm.
As a range-restricted endemic with no known alternative drainage, any significant degradation of the rio Paraguaçu's rocky river reaches would directly threaten the only wild population of H. chrysostiktos. The Least Concern status should be understood in the context of an assessment conducted in 2018; updated surveys would be valuable to confirm population stability.
