A specialist of rapids and cataracts in the upland rivers of Suriname, Hypostomus crassicauda is a stocky rheophilic pleco known from only a narrow range within the Corantijn drainage. Its thick caudal peduncle — the source of its name — is a structural adaptation to life braced against fast current, and the species has never established itself in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus crassicauda was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Marinus Boeseman in his 1968 monograph on the genus Hypostomus in Surinamese rivers, published in Zoologische Verhandelingen (Leiden) 99:1–89. That monograph simultaneously introduced several Surinamese Hypostomus and remains the primary taxonomic reference for the group. The type locality is the Sipaliwini River, a tributary of the upper Corantijn drainage, Suriname.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus crassicauda Boeseman, 1968 as a valid name with no junior synonyms currently listed. No L-number has been assigned, and the species has not entered the registered aquarium trade.

Hypostomus is the largest genus in Loricariidae by species count, containing several hundred valid species distributed across virtually every major South American river system. Most are demersal benthic grazers with armoured bodies and ventral sucking mouths. Boeseman's 1968 work subdivided Surinamese material into several discrete species, and H. crassicauda represents the endemic Corantijn highland element of that assemblage.

Morphology

Adults reach up to 5.5 in standard length (SL), placing H. crassicauda in the mid-size range for the genus. The body follows the typical Hypostomus plan: heavily armoured with interlocking bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows, a broad depressed head, and a ventrally positioned sucking disc. The dorsal fin is large and sail-like when erect, as in most Hypostomus.

The species epithet crassicauda derives from the Latin crassus (thick) and cauda (tail), referring to the notably robust caudal peduncle — the narrow region connecting the body to the tail fin. A thick, muscular caudal peduncle is a recurring adaptation in rheophilic loricariids: it provides mechanical advantage for holding station and maneuvering in fast current. Beyond this feature, detailed morphological data from the original description are the primary source; no subsequent redescription or colour photography from life is available in the accessible literature.

As with other Hypostomus, members of this genus are capable of facultative air-breathing, surfacing to gulp atmospheric air when dissolved oxygen is low — a trait of particular relevance during dry-season conditions when water levels drop and pools may become poorly oxygenated.

Habitat

Hypostomus crassicauda is known from the upper Sipaliwini River and associated drainages within the Corantijn river system of Suriname. Boeseman (1968) documented the species from cataracts, rapids, and adjacent rocky zones characteristic of the Surinamese interior highlands. Substrate at known collection sites includes boulders, stones, gravel, and sand; exposed rocks in the spray zone are frequently colonised by podostemaceous plants — aquatic flowering plants of the family Podostemaceae, notably Mourera fluviatilis and Apinagia richardiana, which anchor to rock faces in fast flow and whose mats provide a rich biofilm grazing surface for rheophilic plecos.

The IUCN assessment (Ballen 2021, published 2023) notes that the species may survive dry periods in well-oxygenated stagnant or semi-stagnant pools when the main current slackens, consistent with the facultative air-breathing capacity documented for the genus. Water conditions in the Sipaliwini highlands are typical of Guiana Shield upland rivers: warm, soft, and often tannin-tinted with low conductivity, though specific physico-chemical measurements for this exact locality are not available in the accessible literature.

Some occurrences fall within preserved areas of the Surinamese interior, contributing to the species' Least Concern assessment.

Feeding

Like the majority of Hypostomus species, H. crassicauda is inferred to be a periphyton and biofilm grazer, using its rasping oral disc to scrape algae, diatoms, and organic matter from rock surfaces and submerged wood. The podostemaceous plant mats documented at collection sites would constitute a particularly rich grazing surface, providing both algal film and attached invertebrates.

No dietary study specific to H. crassicauda has been published in the accessible literature. The rheophilic habitat and rocky substrate strongly suggest a rock-scraping feeding mode consistent with other upland Hypostomus from Guiana Shield drainages. Gut-content analyses of related Surinamese Hypostomus collected from similar habitats record predominantly algae, detritus, and mineral sediment, with minor contributions from aquatic invertebrates.

Mating

No observations of courtship or mating behaviour for H. crassicauda have been published. The species has not been documented in captivity, and fieldwork on its reproductive biology has not been reported in the accessible literature.

Behavioural inferences from the broader Hypostomus genus suggest that males likely defend crevice or cave territories in rocky substrate and that some degree of male guarding of eggs occurs — as documented for other Hypostomus. However, applying specific details from other species to H. crassicauda without direct evidence would be speculative, and the data for this species are sparse.

Breeding

No breeding data for Hypostomus crassicauda are available. The species is not known from aquarium culture, and no captive spawning events have been reported. Field information on clutch size, incubation, or parental care is absent from the literature accessed.

The rheophilic, cataract-dwelling ecology of this species would present significant challenges for any future captive husbandry, as high-flow, well-oxygenated conditions with appropriate rocky structure would be prerequisites for maintaining the fish in a healthy state, let alone inducing reproduction.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus crassicauda has not been documented in the aquarium trade and is not available through standard ornamental fish channels. No registered keepers have been reported on PlanetCatfish. Its narrow endemic range, rheophilic specialisation, and absence from commercial collection areas mean it is effectively unknown in the hobby.

Any hypothetical husbandry would need to replicate the fast-flow, highly oxygenated, rocky conditions of Surinamese cataracts — conditions substantially different from those required by the vast majority of Hypostomus available to aquarists. Water parameters would likely reflect the soft, warm, low-conductivity character of Guiana Shield upland rivers.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus crassicauda as Least Concern, with the evaluation conducted by G.A. Ballen on 14 January 2021 and published in 2023 (reviewed by J.W. Armbruster). The assessment cites no major threats currently identified for the species. Its occurrence within the Surinamese interior, portions of which fall within protected areas, contributes to a relatively stable outlook.

Population trend is listed as unknown. The species' restricted range — confined to the Corantijn drainage highlands of Suriname — means it has a naturally small geographic footprint, which can make endemic species more vulnerable to localised threats even when globally assessed as Least Concern. Mining and logging in the Surinamese interior represent potential future pressures, particularly if they affect water quality or alter flow regimes in the cataracts and rapids that H. crassicauda depends upon.
