Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus dardanelos was described by Zawadzki and Carvalho in 2014 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 12, number 1, pages 43–51). The type locality is the Rio Praia Grande at its mouth into the Rio Aripuanã, immediately downstream of the Dardanelos and Andorinhas waterfalls, in the municipality of Aripuanã, Mato Grosso State, Brazil (10°02'51"S, 59°23'21"W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid name Hypostomus dardanelos (genus id 553, species id 73247) with no synonyms recorded.
The species is placed within the Hypostomus cochliodon group, a well-characterised assemblage of Hypostomus united by large, spoon-shaped (spatulate) teeth with pronounced mesial cusps — a tooth form highly derived relative to the bicuspid teeth of most other Hypostomus and convergently similar to the dentition of Panaque. The cochliodon group name derives from the formerly recognised genus Cochliodon (Heckel, 1854), which is now treated as a junior synonym of Hypostomus, but the group name persists as a clade designator in the systematic literature.
The species epithet dardanelos is a noun in apposition — the name of the waterfall — rather than a Latin adjective, a common convention in ichnthyological nomenclature when naming species after geographical features.
Morphology
The maximum recorded length is 7 in standard length (SL), based on the type series (FishBase reference 95498). The body follows the typical loricariid pattern: elongated, dorsoventrally flattened, and covered in rows of keeled bony scutes. Strong keels are present on the dorsal, mid-dorsal, and median plate series; the mid-ventral series lacks strong keeling.
The most diagnostic feature of H. dardanelos is the colour pattern: a yellowish-brown ground colour overlaid with well-defined, dark, evenly spaced spots of relatively equal size across the dorsal region of the body and fins. Notably, spots are absent from the ventrolateral caudal peduncle and from the proximal portions of the anal and caudal fins, creating a zonal patterning that distinguishes this species from close relatives. The caudal fin consistently shows dark spots distally on both lobes.
Dentally, H. dardanelos possesses 10–13 large, spoon-shaped teeth per jaw ramus — characteristic of the cochliodon group — with a distinctly pronounced mesial cusp. The dentary angle is less than 80° (more acutely angled than in many other Hypostomus), and the tooth morphology includes a notch between the hyomandibular and metapterygoid and a massive rounded-tooth form with large spoon-shaped mesial cusp. The medial buccal papilla is absent. Meristics: 2 dorsal spines, 7 dorsal soft rays, 5 anal soft rays.
Habitat
Hypostomus dardanelos is known from the Rio Aripuanã drainage in Mato Grosso and Amazonas states, Brazil — a major right-bank tributary of the Rio Madeira, itself the largest tributary of the Amazon. The known distribution is restricted to the area downstream of the Dardanelos and Andorinhas waterfalls, a major vertical barrier on the upper Aripuanã that acts as a natural biogeographic boundary.
The IUCN assessment notes that these waterfalls function as a natural barrier isolating the population from the reaches above. The Rio Aripuanã in this region flows through Amazonian lowland forest; the type locality at the mouth of Rio Praia Grande (a small tributary) is representative of a clear to blackwater forest stream environment characteristic of the upper Madeira basin.
No specific water parameter data (temperature, pH, conductivity) for the collection localities appear in the sources reviewed. The Aripuanã drainage at these latitudes (approximately 10°S) experiences warm, humid Amazonian conditions with pronounced seasonal variation in water level.
Feeding
As a member of the Hypostomus cochliodon group, H. dardanelos is inferred to be a xylophage — a wood-rasper — on the basis of its spoon-shaped teeth. The cochliodon group is defined in part by this derived dentition, which is highly effective at gouging into submerged wood to access cellulose-rich material and associated microbial biofilm. This feeding guild is shared with the better-known Panaque species and represents a dietary specialisation convergently evolved in multiple loricariid lineages.
No gut-content analyses or direct feeding observations for H. dardanelos are available in the literature reviewed. The inference of wood-feeding rests entirely on the tooth morphology and group assignment.
Mating
No mating observations have been recorded for H. dardanelos in the wild or in captivity. The species has not been collected for the ornamental trade at any documented scale, and no hobbyist accounts of courtship or pair behaviour exist in accessible databases.

Breeding
No breeding records exist for H. dardanelos. The species is confined to a geographically restricted drainage in an area of Brazil that is not a major focus of ornamental fish collection, and no aquarium breeding attempts have been reported.
Cave-spawning with paternal brood care is the most common reproductive strategy documented in Hypostomus and related loricariids, and the cochliodon-group species for which breeding data are available (including some Panaque) follow this pattern. Whether H. dardanelos conforms to this pattern is an inference from the group, not an observation.

In the aquarium
Hypostomus dardanelos does not appear in the ornamental fish trade and has no recorded common name or L-number designation. No husbandry data appear in any hobbyist database reviewed.
As a cochliodon-group species with spoon-shaped teeth, if it were ever to enter the trade, it would require the same driftwood-centred setup recommended for other wood-rasping plecos: multiple large pieces of quality hardwood as both food source and refuge, supplemented with algae wafers and blanched vegetables, in a well-filtered tank large enough for an 7–7.5 in adult. These are inferences from group biology, not documented observations for this species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus dardanelos as Least Concern (LC) on 30 October 2020 (assessment URL: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/164513713/164513717). The assessment notes that no major threats have been identified and that the population within its known range — restricted to below the Dardanelos and Andorinhas waterfalls in the Rio Aripuanã drainage — appears stable.
The IUCN evaluation specifically recognises the Dardanelos/Andorinhas falls as a natural barrier that both defines the species' range and, effectively, isolates it from some upstream pressures. While this restricted distribution might appear to increase vulnerability, the falls also prevent upstream impacts from propagating directly into the known habitat.
The broader Rio Aripuanã and Madeira basin face ongoing deforestation, mining, and hydroelectric development pressures. The Rio Aripuanã has historically been subject to hydroelectric planning; any future dam construction on the Aripuanã downstream of the falls could affect the single known population of this species. At present, the LC assessment reflects the absence of documented threats rather than a confirmed resilience to them.
