Restricted to a single river basin in eastern Paraguay and assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, Hypostomus dlouhyi is a poorly known mid-sized pleco whose narrow range and habitat pressures make it one of the more conservation-significant members of its genus in the Paraná drainage.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus dlouhyi was described by Claude Weber in 1985 in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie (volume 92, number 4, pages 955–966, figures 1–5), based on specimens collected from a lake in an arm of the Río Yguazú within the Río Paraná system, at approximately 25°25'30"S, 55°20'W, in Paraguay. No synonyms have been recorded for this species; it entered the literature under the name that remains valid today.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus dlouhyi as a valid species within Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803. Weber later treated the subfamily placement comprehensively in his 2003 contribution to the Checklist of Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (EDIPUCRS), where Hypostominae is defined as the largest subfamilial group within Loricariidae.

The species is named in honour of Carlo Dlouhy, a biologist and ichthyologist of Czech origin who relocated to Paraguay in 1975 and worked at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève. Dlouhy's collecting work in Paraguayan rivers contributed substantially to the documentation of loricariid diversity in the country, and this species stands as a formal acknowledgement of that contribution. No common name has been assigned in the scientific literature or in aquarium trade sources.

Morphology

Hypostomus dlouhyi reaches a recorded maximum of 9.5 in standard length (SL). The body conforms to the typical hypostomine plan: a broad, flattened head; robust keeled scutes arranged in rows along the dorsal, lateral, and ventral body surfaces (with the belly itself remaining soft and unplated); and a large ventral sucker-mouth bearing bicuspid teeth adapted for scraping substrate biofilms.

Beyond the basic body form documented at description, detailed published descriptions of coloration patterns, fin ray counts, and morphometric data for H. dlouhyi are limited in widely available sources. The genus Hypostomus is notoriously diverse — over 130 valid species — and many species descriptions were made prior to modern integrative taxonomic approaches that combine molecular and morphological data. The species remains incompletely characterised in the broader literature.

Sexual dimorphism follows the Hypostomus pattern: mature males develop interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and show more pronounced odontodes on the dorsum and leading fin spines during the breeding season. The genital papilla is the most reliable indicator, with females showing a broader, rounded papilla when ripe compared with the small, pointed male structure.

Habitat

Hypostomus dlouhyi is known only from the Yguazú River basin within the middle Paraná River drainage of Paraguay, making it one of the more geographically restricted Hypostomus species in the Río de la Plata system. The type locality — a lake in an arm of the Río Yguazú near the border between Paraguay and Brazil — places the species in eastern Paraguay's highly biodiverse but now heavily impacted Atlantic Forest zone.

The Yguazú (known as the Iguaçu in Brazil) drains one of the most biologically significant river systems in South America, famous for the Iguaçu Falls and for having historically supported exceptional freshwater fish diversity. The middle Paraná drainage in Paraguay has been substantially altered by the Itaipú Dam (completed 1984), the largest hydroelectric facility in the world by annual energy production, which inundated extensive areas of the upper Yguazú and its tributaries. How the construction and operation of Itaipú affected H. dlouhyi populations is not documented in the literature, but the coincidence of dam completion and original species description (both 1984–1985) is noteworthy.

Water parameters specific to H. dlouhyi habitats are not recorded in available sources. The middle Paraná and its Paraguayan tributaries are generally warm subtropical waters, with temperatures ranging across seasons and conditions varying between the clear, rocky forest streams of the upper reaches and more turbid lowland stretches.

Feeding

No specific feeding ecology data have been published for Hypostomus dlouhyi. As a member of Hypostomus, it is most plausibly a benthic grazer, using the ventral sucker-mouth to rasp biofilm, algae, and periphyton from hard substrate surfaces including rock, submerged wood, and root masses. Detritus is incidentally ingested. This generalised scraping strategy is common across the genus and represents the ancestral feeding mode in Hypostominae.

Whether this species has any wood-eating tendency beyond incidental grazing is unknown. No aquarium observations or gut-content analyses are on record. Husbandry inference from genus-level biology suggests that algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and sinking pellets with a vegetable-protein bias would represent appropriate captive diet.

Mating

No observations of courtship behaviour in Hypostomus dlouhyi have been published, and no aquarium records exist. The species follows the general loricariid pattern inferred for the genus: territorial males defend cave sites — undercut banks, submerged hollows, rocky crevices — using interopercular odontodes in lateral displays and, when necessary, direct physical contact with rival males. The relatively restricted natural range of this species, confined to the Yguazú basin, limits the number of collections from which behavioural data might be gathered.

Conditioning and seasonal cues — temperature shifts associated with the austral spring, photoperiod change, or simulated rainfall effects on water chemistry — are expected to play a role in initiating reproductive behaviour, following patterns documented in subtropical congeners.

Breeding

No confirmed breeding records exist for Hypostomus dlouhyi in the scientific or aquarium hobby literature. General Hypostomus breeding biology provides the only framework: males defend cavities, females deposit adhesive eggs on cavity walls, and the male fans and guards the clutch through incubation (typically five to eight days in the genus at tropical temperatures) until fry are free-swimming and dispersing.

Given the species' Vulnerable conservation status and limited documented occurrence even in the wild, captive breeding would be of significant conservation value if it could be achieved. However, no husbandry pathway is currently documented, and establishing a captive population would require co-operation between zoological institutions and access to legally obtained wild specimens — a high bar given the species' restricted range and the pressures on its habitat.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus dlouhyi is not an established aquarium species. PlanetCatfish records no registered keepers, no water parameter data, and no husbandry observations for this taxon. It does not appear to have entered the ornamental fish trade.

Aquarium guidance for this species cannot be given in good conscience beyond the broadest genus-level inference: a large tank (at least 55 US gal) with robust mechanical and biological filtration, provision of cave structures and driftwood, and water conditions appropriate for a subtropical Paraná drainage fish. Specific temperature range, pH tolerance, and behavioural notes are absent from the record.

Prospective keepers should be aware that this is a Vulnerable species with a narrow natural range. Wild collection without appropriate permits and documentation is inconsistent with conservation responsibility for a species in this assessment category.

Conservation

Hypostomus dlouhyi is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(ii) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 3 February 2021. This category reflects a restricted extent of occurrence combined with evidence of continuing decline in the quality or extent of its habitat within the Yguazú River basin.

The primary threats are habitat degradation associated with deforestation in eastern Paraguay's Atlantic Forest region — one of the most threatened forest biomes on Earth, with less than 10% of its original extent remaining — and the resulting increases in sedimentation, altered hydrology, and turbidity that degrade the rocky and woody substrates on which Hypostomus species depend. The legacy of the Itaipú Dam, which transformed large areas of the upper Yguazú drainage, has also permanently altered the character of the basin.

The species is known only from Paraguay, a country with significant ongoing deforestation pressure driven by agricultural expansion. The Yguazú basin represents a narrow geographic footprint for any species; range-restricted loricariids with specific substrate requirements are disproportionately exposed to localised habitat events. The Vulnerable assessment should be taken seriously: this is not a species with the distributional buffer that allows most Hypostomus to absorb landscape-level pressures. Formal monitoring of known populations and protection of riparian forest within the Yguazú catchment are the most meaningful conservation actions available.
