Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus goyazensis was originally described by Charles Tate Regan in 1908 as Plecostomus goyazensis, with the account published in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (1907, part 4, page 798, Figure 207). The type locality is given at the state level only — Goiás, Brazil — with no specific coordinates or precise collection site recorded. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Hypostomus goyazensis (Regan, 1908), with Plecostomus goyazensis treated as the basionym.
Regan's original description placed the species in the then-broadly-used genus Plecostomus, which has since been broken up extensively; the vast majority of its former members now reside in Hypostomus or one of several segregate genera erected over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. H. goyazensis has remained in Hypostomus throughout this taxonomic reorganisation.
No synonyms beyond the basionym are currently listed, and no common name is registered in the aquarium hobby literature or on PlanetCatfish. The species belongs to subfamily Hypostominae of Loricariidae — the largest loricariid subfamily, encompassing the nominal 'sucker-mouth' armoured catfishes.
Morphology
Hypostomus goyazensis is a large-bodied Hypostomus, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 10 in TL; PlanetCatfish lists the size as 10 in SL, consistent with a fish in the upper range of the genus. The discrepancy between these two figures likely reflects measurement convention (SL versus TL) rather than a genuine conflict, as FishBase often lists TL while hobby databases prefer SL.
Beyond size, specific morphological details for H. goyazensis are sparsely documented. As a member of Hypostomus, the species can be expected to display the typical loricariid body plan: a ventral sucking disc formed by modified lips, a body armoured in overlapping bony scutes, a large triangular dorsal fin, and the ability to lock the pectoral and dorsal fin spines in an erect position as a defence. Colouration and any diagnostic pattern characters are not described in accessible sources.
Sexual dimorphism follows the genus-level pattern: males in Hypostomus typically develop evertible interopercular odontodes during reproductive season, and the pectoral spines of males often bear odontodes along their dorsal margin. Whether these features have been specifically confirmed in H. goyazensis is not documented.
Habitat
Hypostomus goyazensis is distributed across the upper Araguaia River basin of central Brazil, with records also from the lower Tocantins and Araguaia river systems — both large rivers draining the cerrado (tropical savanna) plateau of Goiás and Mato Grosso states. The Araguaia and Tocantins converge before emptying into the Amazon system, and their upper reaches flow through gallery forests and open cerrado landscape where river beds can include sand, gravel, and exposed rock depending on local geology.
The cerrado river environment is strongly seasonal: the wet season (roughly October through March) brings high water, inundating floodplain margins and connecting previously isolated pools; the dry season produces low, clear, warmer water confined to the main channel. Hypostomus species in this region must contend with wide temperature and oxygen fluctuation across seasons. The facultative air-breathing capability noted for the genus as a whole is an important adaptation in this context.
No specific water chemistry data (pH, temperature, hardness) have been recorded for H. goyazensis at its collection sites.
Feeding
Feeding behaviour specific to H. goyazensis is undocumented. Hypostomus in the cerrado river systems of central Brazil are generally algae scrapers and periphyton grazers, using the ventral sucking disc and bi-cuspid teeth to rasp biofilm from rock and submerged wood surfaces. Detritus and fine organic particulate matter ingested along with algae contribute to the diet, and some species in the genus also consume wood material.
In captivity, a diet consistent with the genus is appropriate: spirulina-based sinking wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato), and algae growing naturally on tank glass and decor. Supplementary protein in the form of sinking carnivore pellets or thawed bloodworm can be offered periodically. A large species of this body size produces considerable waste, making robust biological filtration essential.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been documented for H. goyazensis. Based on the broader Hypostomus biology, males are expected to establish and defend territories around rocky crevices, submerged logs, or undercut banks that serve as potential spawning sites. Competition between males in these systems can be intense, and established territory-holders show persistent site fidelity.
The wide, seasonally flooded rivers of the upper Araguaia basin provide an abundance of exposed rock substrate during low water, and submerged logs accumulate in channel margins — both are typical Hypostomus spawning microhabitats. No field observations specific to this species are on record.
Breeding
No breeding reports for H. goyazensis appear in the scientific literature or in aquarium databases. PlanetCatfish lists no breeding records for the species, and no images are on file, reflecting its near-complete absence from the hobby.
By analogy with better-documented Hypostomus, the species is likely a cave-spawner with paternal brood care: males fan and guard the adhesive egg clutch deposited on cave walls or crevice surfaces until the fry are free-swimming. Whether H. goyazensis has ever been kept in captivity long enough for breeding to be attempted is unknown from available sources.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus goyazensis is not recorded as an aquarium species. PlanetCatfish carries no spot records, no registered keepers, and no images — the species is essentially unknown in the hobby as of 2026. It carries no L-number or other trade designation.
Its large adult size — approaching 10 in TL — places it in the category of plecos that require substantial space: a minimum tank of 80–105 US gal with strong filtration, adequate oxygenation, and a mixed substrate of sand and smooth rock would be appropriate for an adult. Rocky caves and driftwood tangles provide essential shelter and feeding substrate consistent with the genus.
Should specimens become available through specialist importers or research collections, care parameters derived from the cerrado river environment (warm water in the 75–82 °F range, near-neutral to slightly acidic pH reflecting the soft, blackwater-influenced rivers of the cerrado) would be a reasonable starting point in the absence of published data.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus goyazensis as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018), reflecting the absence of identified major threats to the species within its range in the upper Araguaia and Tocantins basins at the time of assessment.
The cerrado biome is one of the world's most threatened tropical savannas, having lost more than half of its original extent to agricultural conversion since the mid-twentieth century. The rivers draining this region face ongoing pressures from sedimentation caused by deforestation, altered hydrology from irrigation and impoundment, and direct habitat modification. While H. goyazensis is not currently considered threatened, the long-term trajectory of the cerrado river system warrants continued monitoring of benthic loricariid communities, including this species.
