One of the older formally described Guiana-shield Hypostomus species, Hypostomus gymnorhynchus has been collected from rocky rapids across the coastal rivers of the Guianas since J.R. Norman's 1926 description from an Approuague tributary in French Guiana. A rheophilic medium-sized pleco that rarely grows beyond 8 in in practice, it inhabits sun-drenched boulder rapids from French Guiana to Suriname — a habitat niche that has kept it scarce in the aquarium trade but secure enough to hold Least Concern status.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus gymnorhynchus was described by John Roxborough Norman in 1926, published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 9, volume 18, number 103, page 95). The type locality is Iponcin Creek, a tributary of the Approuague River in French Guiana. The original name was Plecostomus gymnorhynchus Norman, 1926; subsequent generic revision moved it to Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Hypostomus gymnorhynchus (Norman, 1926), with the earlier combination Plecostomus gymnorhynchus treated as a heterotypic synonym.

A full redescription was provided by Le Bail et al. in 2000 (a French Guiana ichthyofaunal reference), and the species is treated in the comprehensive review of Guiana Hypostomus by Weber, Covain & Fisch-Muller (2012) in Cybium (36(1): 195–227), which remains the authoritative modern account of Hypostomus diversity across the Guiana shield.

Within Hypostominae (tribe Hypostomini), Hypostomus is the largest loricariid genus, with over 150 valid species. Armbruster (2004) established the broad phylogenetic framework within which Hypostomus species are grouped; H. gymnorhynchus sits within the Guiana-shield radiation of the genus, most closely related to other coastal Guiana species such as H. surinamensis and H. coppenamensis.

Morphology

Hypostomus gymnorhynchus is a medium-sized Hypostomus. FishBase records a maximum published standard length of 10.5 in SL and a maximum weight of 253 g, both from Weber et al. (2012); in practice, field and aquarium records suggest most individuals remain below 8 in SL, consistent with the FishBase note that it 'rarely attains a length of 8 in'. PlanetCatfish lists the species at 6.5 in SL based on aquarium and museum material.

The body plan is the typical Hypostomus profile: robust, somewhat depressed, covered in bony scutes bearing a pattern of dark, closely spaced spots on a lighter brown ground — a classic 'common pleco' appearance widespread in the genus. The head is broad and somewhat flattened; the mouth is ventrally positioned with a wide oral disc. Teeth are bicuspid, typical of algae-grazing Hypostomus.

The specific epithet gymnorhynchus (from Greek gymnos, naked; rhynchos, snout or beak) refers to the bare or unornamented snout — a feature distinguishing this species from others in the Guiana fauna that bear more prominent rostral odontodes or longer snout papillae. The upper and lower jaws each bear numerically modest tooth rows; precise tooth counts were provided in the original description.

Sexual dimorphism is not prominently documented for this species but is presumed to follow the standard Hypostomus pattern, where mature males develop more numerous and elongated odontodes on the body flanks and sometimes on the pectoral-fin spine during the breeding season, while females are more smoothly rounded in the trunk when gravid.

Habitat

Hypostomus gymnorhynchus is distributed across the coastal rivers of the Guianas, with confirmed records from French Guiana (type locality: Approuague basin), Suriname (Marowijne/Maroni and Coppename drainages), and Guyana. PlanetCatfish lists records from the Oyapock, Approuague, Mana, and Marowijne drainages.

FishBase characterises the species as a rheophile: it occurs in very sunny rapids with strong current and rocky bottom, and inhabits 'the largest part of freshwaters, from headwaters to upstream of the lower falls, with rocky substrate consisting of boulders, stones, gravels, and sand; the exposed wet rocks are often covered by the podostemaceous plants Mourera fluviatilis and Apinagia richardiana'. This rapids-associated flora is characteristic of the breakfall (chute) zones of Guiana shield rivers — exposed, high-energy habitats where few other macrophytes can survive.

The ecology of these Guiana coastal rivers is strongly influenced by the ancient shield geology: blackwater or clearwater, moderately acidic to neutral, low in dissolved minerals, and subject to seasonal flood-pulse dynamics. Temperatures in the lowland reaches are typically 79–84 °F; upstream highland sections may be marginally cooler. The fish is listed as demersal and tropical by FishBase, occupying depths down to several metres in larger rivers but shallow (< 3 ft) in smaller quebradas.

Feeding

As a typical Hypostomus, H. gymnorhynchus feeds primarily on epilithic algae and periphyton scraped from boulder and cobble surfaces in the rapids it inhabits. The wide oral disc and paired rows of bicuspid teeth are morphologically suited to this grazing lifestyle. In high-energy boulder rapids, the periphyton community is often dense and rich in diatoms, green algae, and cyanobacteria, supplemented by fine organic detritus trapped among the stones.

Particulate detritus, decomposing plant matter, and any invertebrate material encountered during grazing would supplement the algal diet. Larger Hypostomus in rapids habitats have been recorded consuming aquatic insect larvae, particularly chironomids and ephemeropterans, opportunistically. The presence of aquatic macrophytes (Mourera, Apinagia) on exposed rocks in the rapids may also provide additional plant material.

In captivity, the standard Hypostomus diet is appropriate: algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking pellets as staple, supplemented by blanched vegetables (courgette, sweet potato, spinach) and occasional protein. Driftwood for grazing is beneficial. Unlike wood-eating Panaque, this species does not require driftwood as a dietary component but will rasp the surface biofilm from it.

Mating

No field or aquarium observations of courtship behaviour specific to H. gymnorhynchus have been published. The species' breeding biology is expected to follow the general Hypostomus pattern: males become territorial in the vicinity of a suitable spawning cavity — a natural hole in a rock, a hollow boulder underside, or a submerged root — during the breeding season, which in wild Guiana populations likely corresponds to pre-flood or early flood-season timing.

Hypostomus breeding males typically develop more conspicuous body odontodes during the breeding season, used in territorial displays and male–male competition. The female is broader-bodied than the male when gravid. Courtship involves the male directing the female toward the selected cavity.

PlanetCatfish records no captive breeding reports for this species. Given the rheophilic habitat preference — strong-current, high-oxygen boulder rapids — replicating breeding conditions in captivity would be challenging without specialised high-flow equipment. Stream-simulation tank designs with powerheads or tidal-flow pumps creating powerful surface current over a rocky bed would be the closest practical approach.

Breeding

Hypostomus gymnorhynchus has not been bred in captivity in any documented report (PlanetCatfish: no breeding reports). This is unsurprising given the species' combination of a challenging rheophilic habitat preference, modest presence in the trade, and the general difficulty of replicating the high-oxygen, strong-current environment of Guiana shield boulder rapids in a standard aquarium.

The inferred breeding mode, based on the Hypostomus genus, is cave-spawning with paternal brood care. The male fans and guards the egg mass in a sheltered cavity; eggs are demersal and adhesive. Incubation periods across the genus are typically 5–8 days at tropical temperatures. Fry are large relative to many catfish (yolk-sac absorbed over one to two weeks), and juveniles are initially cryptic among the substrate before taking up a more active grazing lifestyle.

For any serious attempt at captive breeding, providing high-current conditions with a powerful circulation pump, well-oxygenated water, and rocky spawning cavities would be essential prerequisites. Seasonal temperature cycling (slightly cooler in dry season) may also function as a reproductive trigger.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus gymnorhynchus is rarely available in the aquarium trade and carries no L-number, reflecting its commercial obscurity relative to flashier Guiana Hypostomus. PlanetCatfish records only two registered keepers, confirming its scarcity. Specimens do occasionally reach specialist importers, particularly alongside other Guiana species collected as by-catch in the pleco trade.

For the aquarist who obtains this species, the main considerations are size and water movement. At up to 10.5 in SL maximum (though commonly smaller), H. gymnorhynchus requires a tank of at least 55 US gal for a single adult; the heavy bioload of a Hypostomus of this size demands powerful filtration. The most important environmental requirement is vigorous water movement: a powerhead or wave pump creating strong turbulent flow is not optional but essential for long-term health. Stagnant conditions will compromise gill function and immune competence.

Water parameters: temperature 77–84 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 (reflecting the slightly acidic to neutral Guiana coastal rivers), soft to moderately hard (up to ~12 °dH). The fish is hardy within this range and tolerant of water-chemistry variation, consistent with the relatively wide geographic range across several Guiana river systems.

A rocky aquascape with smooth boulders and cobbles, supplemented by driftwood, provides appropriate shelter and foraging surfaces. Plants are generally safe from an herbivory standpoint but may be uprooted by a large pleco moving through the substrate.

Compatibility: generally peaceful toward non-competing tankmates. Intraspecific and interspecific aggression toward similar-sized bottom-dwellers can occur when cave sites are contested; provide multiple separated shelters.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus gymnorhynchus as Least Concern (LC) in January 2021, reflecting the species' relatively wide distribution across several Guiana coastal river systems and the absence of documented significant population decline. The rheophilic boulder-rapids habitat, while demanding, is broadly stable across the Guiana shield, which retains some of the highest forest cover in tropical South America.

The Guiana shield rivers have not experienced the large-scale hydroelectric impoundment that has affected Amazonian rivers to the south and west; as a result, H. gymnorhynchus has not faced the disruption of migratory or dispersal routes that threatens rapids-specialist fish in the Amazon. Small-scale gold mining (garimpo) does occur in several Guiana watersheds and can cause local sedimentation and mercury contamination, but the species' range extends across multiple drainages and no single catchment-level threat is considered sufficient to elevate conservation concern at this time.

The species is listed as a commercial aquarium fish by FishBase, though as noted above it is rare in trade. There is no evidence of over-exploitation for the ornamental market.
