A moderately sized armoured catfish from the coastal river systems of the Guianas, Hypostomus hemiurus is best known to ichthyologists for an unusual caudal-fin shape that inspired its evocative name — 'half-tailed' — and for its restricted range in the Guianan coastal drainages of northeastern South America.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus hemiurus was erected by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912, though the name itself appeared a year earlier in Eigenmann (1910) as a nomen nudum — a name without accompanying diagnostic characters. Full publication of those diagnostic characters followed in Eigenmann (1912), making that the valid date of description. The name was subsequently consolidated in the comprehensive monographic treatment of Boeseman (1968), which provided additional comparative material and placed the species within Hypostomus sensu lato.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the combination Hypostomus hemiurus as valid, seated within the family Loricariidae and subfamily Hypostominae — the most species-rich grouping within the family, encompassing the large and taxonomically complex Hypostomus, Pterygoplichthys, and related genera. The species was revisited in the thorough 2012 review of Guianan Hypostomus by Weber, Covain, and Fisch-Muller, which confirmed the validity of H. hemiurus and established the type locality as the Río Potaro in what was then British Guiana and is now Guyana. The holotype measures 5.5 in SL.

The genus name Hypostomus derives from the Greek hypo (under) and stoma (mouth), referring to the inferior, ventrally positioned mouth that is the defining external feature of the genus. The specific epithet is addressed under Etymology below.

Morphology

Hypostomus hemiurus reaches approximately 8 in standard length (SL), placing it in the mid-size range within a genus that spans from roughly 4.5 in to more than 23.5 in. The body follows the standard Hypostomus plan: dorsoventrally flattened in the anterior region, tapering to a more cylindrical posterior, and encased in interlocking rows of keeled bony scutes that form the characteristic loricariid armour.

The most diagnostically notable feature is the caudal fin, whose shape gives the species its name. Rather than the symmetrical or slightly forked caudal typical of many Hypostomus, H. hemiurus has an oblique, emarginate caudal fin in which the lower rays are usually less than twice the length of the middle rays — an unusual proportioning that creates the 'half-tailed' impression noted by Eigenmann. This trait was sufficiently consistent across the type series to merit its use as a specific epithet.

Like all Hypostominae, the species bears an evertible interopercular apparatus armed with stout odontodes, which functions in defence and in male–male competition. Ground coloration and precise spot patterning are not documented in accessible literature for this species beyond general Hypostomus norms (dark body with pale spots or reticulations). Water parameter and breeding data are not documented in the literature available.

Habitat

Hypostomus hemiurus is recorded from the Guianan coastal drainages — the rivers of Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana that flow northward from the Guiana Shield into the Atlantic Ocean. The type locality is the Río Potaro, a blackwater tributary of the Essequibo River in Guyana, famous for Kaieteur Falls. The species is demersal and freshwater-obligate.

The Guiana Shield drainage encompasses an enormous variety of river types: the shield rivers themselves tend to run over ancient crystalline bedrock with low ionic content, soft to very soft water, and acidic to neutral pH. Downstream coastal plains rivers may carry somewhat more sediment and higher conductivity. Specific water parameter records for H. hemiurus are not available in the literature accessed, but the general Guianan drainage chemistry suggests soft, mildly acidic to neutral conditions.

Like other Hypostomus in comparable systems, this species is presumed to associate with rocky substrates and submerged wood in moderate-current habitats, rasping periphyton and biofilm from hard surfaces. Its facultative air-breathing capability — documented for the genus — is advantageous in seasonally low-oxygen environments typical of Guiana Shield rivers during dry-season drawdown.

Feeding

Specific dietary studies on H. hemiurus are not available in the literature accessed. Based on the biology of the genus and subfamily, the species is a periphyton and biofilm grazer — rasping epilithic algae, cyanobacteria, diatoms, microinvertebrates, and associated organic matter from hard substrates using the scraping dentition characteristic of Hypostomus. The inferior mouth, reinforced jaws, and spine-lined oral disc are adapted for adhesion to irregular surfaces in current while feeding.

Hypostomus species in similar Guiana Shield habitats typically supplement algal scraping with fine detritus and organic particulates, particularly in slower-current or depositional microhabitats. Some congeners are known to rasp submerged wood, obtaining cellulose and associated biofilm, though H. hemiurus is not specifically documented as a xylophage.

In an aquarium context, the species would be expected to accept standard pleco fare: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and sinking catfish pellets. A diet heavily weighted toward plant matter and algae is appropriate for any Hypostomus of this origin.

Mating

Mating behaviour has not been documented for H. hemiurus specifically. Within Hypostomus more broadly, males typically establish and defend territories centred on a suitable cavity — a crevice between rocks, an undercut bank, a hollow log — into which gravid females are courted. Males develop more pronounced interopercular odontodes during reproductive condition, which serve both as combat weapons against rival males and as tactile signals during close-range courtship.

Sexual dimorphism in Hypostomus is generally subtle outside of the breeding season. The most reliable indicators are the size and morphology of the urogenital papilla — larger and rounder in mature females, smaller and more pointed in males — and the broader body profile of conditioned females when viewed dorsally. These indicators are presumed to apply to H. hemiurus, though no specific confirmation exists in the literature.

Breeding

No breeding records are documented in the literature for H. hemiurus, either in the field or in captivity. The species is not represented in the ornamental trade under this name and has not been kept widely in home aquaria, so hobbyist reports are absent.

By analogy with the many well-documented Hypostomus congeners, cave spawning with paternal egg-guarding is the expected reproductive strategy. The male would fan and guard adhesive eggs deposited on the interior walls of a rock cavity or hollow wood, with fry becoming free-swimming after a typical incubation of five to ten days depending on temperature. Fry of related species are miniature adults capable of scraping biofilm surfaces within days of emerging from the egg.

Until specific breeding observations are recorded for this species, these parallels should be treated as informed inference rather than confirmed fact.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus hemiurus is not established in the ornamental trade and is unlikely to be encountered in aquarium retail. No records of aquarium keeping appear in the accessible literature or hobbyist databases. The species is known only from field collections and museum specimens.

If specimens were to become available, husbandry parameters derived from the Guianan drainage would apply: soft to moderately soft, mildly acidic to neutral water (pH roughly 6.0–7.2 based on typical Guiana Shield river chemistry), warm tropical temperatures, strong filtration, and substrate consisting of smooth rocks, pebbles, and pieces of driftwood to replicate the benthic environment. At 8 in SL, adults would require a tank of at least 55 US gal to be maintained with appropriate swimming and territorial space.

Algae wafers, spirulina, and blanched vegetables would form the dietary base. The species should be treated as potentially aggressive toward conspecifics and other benthic species, in line with genus-wide behaviour patterns.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus hemiurus as Least Concern in 2007, citing no identified major threats across its Guianan coastal drainage range. The Guiana Shield is among the least disturbed large tropical river systems in South America, with much of the drainage basin retained in forest cover and subject to relatively low levels of agricultural conversion compared to the Amazon basin lowlands.

The primary pressures in this region include small-scale gold mining (which can introduce mercury and cause turbidity spikes in individual river reaches), some logging, and urban expansion near coastal centres. None of these has been specifically linked to population declines in H. hemiurus. The 2007 assessment is now nearly two decades old; an updated evaluation drawing on recent hydrological and biodiversity data from the Guianas would be informative, but the species' preference for clear-water shield rivers somewhat insulates it from the worst anthropogenic pressures affecting fish in more heavily developed South American lowland systems.
