A species from the upper Rio Paraná basin of central Brazil, Hypostomus heraldoi was described in 2008 alongside a second new Hypostomus from the same system and named in honour of one of Brazil's most distinguished ichthyologists. It remains a scientific species only — not recorded in the ornamental trade — known from the Rio Corumbá and adjacent drainages of Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus heraldoi was formally described by Zawadzki, Weber, and Pavanelli in 2008, in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 6, number 3, pages 403–412), under the title 'Two new species of Hypostomus Lacepède, 1803 (Teleostei: Loricariidae) from the upper Rio Paraná basin, Brazil'. The holotype was collected from the Rio Corumbá drainage and is deposited at NUP (Núcleo de Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ictiologia e Aquicultura, Maringá). The species is accepted under the valid combination Hypostomus heraldoi Zawadzki, Weber & Pavanelli, 2008 per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

The species is placed in the large, diverse genus Hypostomus Lacepède, 1803, subfamily Hypostominae, family Loricariidae. The upper Rio Paraná basin has proven productive for Hypostomus discovery; several other species have been described from its headwater tributaries in recent decades. FishBase records additional specimens from the Rio Grande, another upper Paraná tributary, extending the known distribution slightly beyond the type locality.

The species was described simultaneously with a second new Hypostomus from the same basin in the same publication, reflecting the complexity and incomplete documentation of loricariid diversity in central Brazilian river systems. No L-number or trade code has been assigned.

Morphology

Hypostomus heraldoi reaches a maximum documented length of 9.5 in standard length (SL), placing it in the mid-to-large range for the genus. The FishBase record lists this as a male or unsexed specimen.

The original description characterises H. heraldoi as a typical plated Hypostomus with a largely naked ventral surface — unplated or only partly plated on the abdomen — which is a diagnostic feature used to separate species groups within the genus. Coloration is described as a dark-spotted pattern over a lighter background, a pattern common across much of Hypostomus but variable in spot size, density, and contrast between individuals and populations.

The suckermouth is ventrally positioned, armed with numerous slender teeth for rasping aufwuchs from hard substrates. Like all Loricariidae, the body is covered dorsally in interlocking bony scutes arranged in rows; the leading edge of the pectoral fin is stiffened into a robust spine. Sexual dimorphism in H. heraldoi has not been described in detail but is expected to follow the general Hypostomus pattern: males develop more elaborate odontodes on the cheeks and pectoral spines, particularly during reproductive condition, and gravid females are visibly broader in the mid-body region.

Habitat

Hypostomus heraldoi is known from the Rio Corumbá and the Rio Grande — tributaries of the upper Rio Paraná basin — in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás, central Brazil. This region occupies the Cerrado biome, a vast tropical savanna characterised by seasonally variable rivers with pronounced wet and dry seasons, often running over rocky or sandy substrates with varying amounts of submerged wood.

The upper Rio Paraná basin is a large, complex system whose headwater tributaries in the Cerrado differ substantially from the lowland floodplain habitats farther downstream. Cerrado rivers typically carry warmer, moderately mineralised waters and are subject to seasonal flooding during the wet season (October–March) followed by extended low-water periods. The rio Corumbá is a clear-to-turbid river over a predominantly rocky and sandy bed.

No specific water chemistry data from collection sites are recorded in the secondary literature for this species.

Feeding

No diet data specific to H. heraldoi are published. The genus Hypostomus is characterised by benthic algae and biofilm scraping — rasping periphyton, diatoms, filamentous algae, fine detritus, and associated microorganisms from rock and wood surfaces using the multi-cusped teeth of the lower jaw. Some species ingest significant quantities of sediment incidentally. Hypostomus in Cerrado rivers likely encounter a seasonal variation in food availability tied to wet-season flooding, which disperses and dilutes periphyton communities, versus low-water concentrations of algae on exposed rock surfaces.

Mating

No behavioural observations exist for H. heraldoi. The mating system of Hypostomus in general involves territorial males defending shelter sites — crevices between boulders, undercut riverbanks, or cavities in submerged wood — during the breeding season. Males in reproductive condition display enlarged odontodes on the opercular region and pectoral spines, which are likely used in male–male assessment and possibly in tactile courtship interactions. Females are attracted to and coaxed into the male's defended cavity for spawning. This pattern is inferred from the genus and is not documented for this species.

Breeding

No breeding records exist for H. heraldoi in captivity or the wild. The species has not been documented in the ornamental trade and does not appear in aquarium literature or hobbyist databases. Cave-spawning with paternal egg-guarding is the reproductive mode consistently documented across Hypostomus and the broader Loricariidae, and this is the expected breeding pattern for H. heraldoi, though it has not been confirmed for this species specifically.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus heraldoi has not been recorded in the ornamental trade, and no aquarium husbandry data are available. Its maximum documented size of 9.5 in SL would require a substantial aquarium — at minimum 55 US gal — with appropriate benthic structure: flat rocks, submerged wood, and sandy zones that replicate Cerrado river substrates. Water parameters consistent with upper Paraná tributaries would be appropriate: warm tropical temperatures, moderate hardness reflecting Cerrado geology, and good filtration to maintain water quality for a benthic fish with significant waste output.

Without direct keeper observations, nothing further can be stated.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus heraldoi as Least Concern in 2018. The range is restricted to the upper Rio Paraná basin in central Brazil, encompassing the Rio Corumbá and Rio Grande drainages, but no major threats were identified at the time of assessment. Population trend is unknown.

The upper Rio Paraná basin faces substantial pressure from agricultural expansion (the Cerrado is one of the most heavily converted biomes in South America), siltation from deforestation and soybean cultivation, dam construction on major tributaries, and water extraction for irrigation. These pressures affect the clarity and substrate integrity of streams that Hypostomus species depend upon. The Rio Corumbá system in particular has been subject to hydroelectric development. While H. heraldoi is not currently considered threatened, the ongoing transformation of the Cerrado river network warrants continued monitoring of its restricted range.
