Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus krikati was formally described by de Oliveira, Guimarães, Brito and Ottoni in 2022, published in Zootaxa (volume 5219, number 4, pages 339–352, December 2022). The species is placed in the Hypostomus plecostomus species group — one of the larger and more taxonomically complex assemblages within the genus — and is assigned to subfamily Hypostominae of family Loricariidae. The type locality is in the Mearim River basin, state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil; precise coordinates were not published in the accessible description.
As a species described in 2022, H. krikati is not yet indexed in the public version of FishBase and has not received a formal IUCN Red List assessment. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name and authorship.
Morphology
Hypostomus krikati is described as a large-bodied member of its genus. Precise holotype measurements were not reported in the accessible abstract of the description paper. Within the Hypostomus plecostomus group, the species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of conspicuous lateral plate keels, lower tooth counts relative to other members of the plecostomus group, a completely plated abdomen (rather than partially naked), and dark spots that are not arranged in horizontal rows — a pattern arrangement that separates it from several sympatric or geographically proximate relatives.
The fully plated abdomen and well-developed lateral keels are morphological features associated with strong-current rheophilic habitats, consistent with life in a large river system such as the Mearim.
Habitat
Hypostomus krikati is restricted to the Mearim River hydrographic basin in Maranhão state, northeastern Brazil. The Mearim is a large pre-Amazonian river draining the transitional ecotone between Amazon rainforest and Brazilian Cerrado — a biogeographically distinctive region sometimes referred to as the Gurupi Mosaic. This zone is characterised by a mosaic of forest types, seasonal rainfall, and rivers that differ in chemistry and hydrology from both the core Amazon and the more arid Caatinga to the east.
Water chemistry in the Mearim basin is expected to be soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH approximately 6.5–7.0) with temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F, reflecting the hot tropical lowland climate of Maranhão. No field water-chemistry data were published in the species description.
Feeding
No dietary study has been published for H. krikati. By analogy with the broader Hypostomus plecostomus group and other large riverine Hypostomus, the species is presumed to be a benthic scraper feeding primarily on periphyton — the biofilm of algae, bacteria, and fine detritus growing on hard substrates in the river. The morphology of the H. plecostomus group, with robust teeth suited to scraping firm surfaces, is consistent with aufwuchs grazing on submerged rocks and woody debris.
Mating
No observations of courtship behaviour have been published for H. krikati. The mating system of large Hypostomus in general involves male territory defence around rock crevices or cavities that serve as spawning sites. Sexual dimorphism, particularly in odontode development on the cheeks and body, is typically more pronounced in reproductively active males across the plecostomus group. No captive maintenance of this species is known.
Breeding
No breeding data have been published for H. krikati. Genus-level biology indicates cave spawning with paternal brood care as the typical reproductive mode in Hypostomus: males defend a sheltered cavity, the female deposits adhesive eggs on the interior walls, and the male guards and fans the clutch until hatching. Whether this species has ever been maintained in captivity is unknown.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus krikati is not present in the aquarium trade and is known only from the scientific type series collected in the Mearim River basin. No husbandry data are available. As a large-bodied Hypostomus — likely exceeding 12 in total length at full size, consistent with other members of the plecostomus group — it would require a large aquarium if it ever entered the hobby. The transitional forest rivers of Maranhão are remote, and collection pressure on this newly described species is not known.
Conservation
Hypostomus krikati has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it was described in 2022 and has not yet entered the formal assessment cycle. Its known range is restricted to the Mearim River basin in Maranhão — a naturally circumscribed distribution that increases vulnerability to localised threats.
The Cerrado-Amazon ecotone where this species lives is one of the most rapidly transforming landscapes in South America. Agricultural expansion — particularly soya and cattle production — combined with fire and selective logging drives severe deforestation in Maranhão's transition zone. The Gurupi Mosaic region, which encompasses the type locality area, has experienced significant forest loss in recent decades. River sedimentation and altered hydrology from catchment deforestation are the most direct threats to benthic loricariids dependent on clean, rock-substrate rivers. No specific conservation measures are known to address H. krikati.
