Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus minotauros was described by Zawadzki, Penido, Pessali and Lucinda in 2024 in Zootaxa (volume 5361, issue 1), published on 22 January 2024. The description appeared in the Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters series (reference IEF-1194). The type locality is in the upper rio Tocantins basin, Goiás State, central Brazil.
The species epithet derives from Latinised Greek: *Minotauros*, the mythological Minotaur — the creature with a bull's stout, massive head — chosen in allusion to the notably deep, blunt head profile of the new species, which is disproportionately deep relative to body length compared with most Hypostomus congeners. At 20.0–22.7% SL, head depth is a key diagnostic character separating H. minotauros from its allies.
Formal diagnosis distinguishes H. minotauros from all congeners by a combination of characters: deep head (20.0–22.7% SL), large eyes relative to head size, absence of keels on the lateral plate series, large faded dark blotches on a clearer background, a flap-shaped median buccal papilla, and teeth with an ellipsoidal medial cusp — a morphologically distinctive tooth form within the genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Hypostomus minotauros as a valid species. As of mid-2026 no IUCN assessment has been completed.
Morphology
Hypostomus minotauros is a small species, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 5 in (SL). Within a genus where adults of many species exceed 10–12 in SL, this places H. minotauros at the compact end of the Hypostomus size spectrum — a size that can make identification more challenging, as small Hypostomus are sometimes confused with juveniles of larger species.
The most distinctive external feature is the head: unusually deep (20.0–22.7% SL), broad, and blunt in dorsal and lateral profile — the character that inspired the Minotaur epithet. The eyes are large relative to head size. The lateral plate series lacks keels, giving the body flanks a smoother profile than in many congeners. Coloration is pale to moderate brown with large, diffuse (faded) dark blotches on a lighter background — not the sharply contrasting spots or bands seen in some relatives, but softer, less defined markings.
The oral disc bears teeth with an ellipsoidal medial cusp — a specific tooth crown morphology used as a diagnostic character in the original description. The median buccal papilla (a fleshy projection inside the mouth disc) is described as flap-shaped, another distinguishing character. Like other Hypostomus, the species is demersal and tropical, and facultative air-breathing capability is expected given the family's broad possession of this adaptation.
Habitat
Hypostomus minotauros is known from the upper and medium rio Tocantins basin in Goiás State, central Brazil. The rio Tocantins is a major river of the Brazilian interior, draining the cerrado (tropical savanna) plateau before joining the lower Amazon system near its mouth. In its upper reaches in Goiás, the river and its tributaries flow over rocky outcrops characteristic of the cerrado landscape.
Habitat is described as rocky-bottomed small to large rivers within the Tocantins basin — a broad characterisation that encompasses everything from larger main-channel stretches to smaller rocky tributaries. The cerrado rivers of central Brazil are typically clear to lightly tannin-stained, with seasonally variable flow driven by the pronounced wet-dry cycle of the Brazilian interior (wet season November–March, dry season April–October). Water during the dry season can become warmer and more concentrated; the wet season brings cooler, softer, oxygen-rich conditions.
The absence of keels on the lateral plates in H. minotauros may indicate a preference for slower-moving or less turbulent microhabitats within the rocky river system, since pronounced lateral keels are often associated with species occupying faster-flowing, more abrasive current environments. No depth or precise microhabitat data are available.
Feeding
No specific feeding data for Hypostomus minotauros have been published. The species is presumed to share the algae-scraper and periphyton-grazer diet typical of the genus, using the broad oral disc and bicuspid-to-multi-cusped teeth to rasp biofilm from rocky surfaces. The ellipsoidal medial cusp of the tooth crown described in the original publication represents a specific morphological variant within Hypostomus tooth diversity, but its functional significance for diet — whether it aids scraping of harder substrates or processing of specific food types — has not been investigated.
In the rocky-bottom Tocantins tributaries, the primary dietary components are likely epilithic algae and cyanobacteria coating rock surfaces, supplemented by fine organic detritus, fungal hyphae, and any invertebrate material encountered on the substrate. The cerrado rivers of Goiás have clear, nutrient-moderate water during the dry season that supports algal biofilm growth on exposed stones.
Aquarium diet follows general Hypostomus practice: sinking algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched vegetables, and sinking pellets, with natural biofilm growth encouraged by leaving rocks and surfaces exposed to aquarium lighting.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been documented for Hypostomus minotauros; the species was described only in January 2024 and has not entered the ornamental fish trade. Reproductive biology must be inferred from the genus.
As in other Hypostomus, males are expected to develop more prominent interopercular odontodes during the breeding season, becoming territorial around preferred spawning cavities in the rocky substrate. The relatively small adult size of H. minotauros (5 in SL) means it requires correspondingly smaller cavity sites than a large Hypostomus — crevices between cobbles or smaller hollow spaces in rocky banks could serve as natural spawning sites.
Seasonal breeding cues in the Tocantins system are likely tied to the onset of the wet season: rising water levels, decreasing temperature after the peak summer heat, and improving water quality as rains arrive all function as reproductive triggers in South American freshwater fish generally. No captive observations exist.
Breeding
No captive breeding records exist for Hypostomus minotauros. The species is too recently described and too rarely encountered in the hobby for any husbandry experience to have accumulated.
Based on genus biology, H. minotauros is presumed to be a cave or crevice spawner with paternal brood care. The male would select a tight cavity, the female would deposit adhesive eggs within it, and the male would guard and oxygenate the clutch by continuous fanning until the fry are mobile. Clutch size in a 5 in SL Hypostomus would be expected to be modest relative to larger congeners — likely in the range of dozens to low hundreds of eggs — though no data exist.
The absence of lateral keels and the relatively small size suggest this species might be kept and potentially bred in a more modestly sized aquarium than is required for larger Hypostomus, if it were to enter the trade. Rocky cave structures, good water flow, and seasonal temperature variation mimicking the cerrado wet/dry cycle would be reasonable starting points for any future breeding attempt.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus minotauros is not present in the ornamental fish trade and has no L-number. As a species described in January 2024 from the upper Tocantins basin of Goiás, it is known only from scientific collections; no imports have been documented as of mid-2026.
Its small adult size — 5 in SL — makes it one of the more compact Hypostomus and, in principle, among the more manageable for aquaria: a tank of 40–55 US gal with appropriate rocky structure would be a reasonable minimum for an adult if the species were available. The deep, blunt head and large eyes that define it in the original description give it a distinctive silhouette compared with the longer-snouted majority of Hypostomus.
Water parameters should reflect its cerrado river origin: slightly acidic to neutral (pH roughly 6.5–7.5), low to moderate hardness, and a temperature range that accommodates seasonal variation in the Brazilian interior (approximately 72–82 °F is a reasonable estimate, though no field measurements are published). Good oxygenation and regular water changes are essential for all Hypostomus.
Any aquarist obtaining this species would be working without published precedent and should document their experience for the benefit of the broader hobby community. The species has received brief attention in the hobbyist press (notably AquaInfo), but no care accounts have followed.
Conservation
Hypostomus minotauros has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it was described only in January 2024 and carries Not Evaluated status. No population data, range-wide surveys, or threat assessments have been published.
The upper rio Tocantins basin in Goiás State faces well-documented pressures. The Tocantins has been heavily dammed — the Tucuruí Dam downstream is one of the world's largest — and the upper basin tributaries in Goiás experience ongoing pressure from agriculture (largely soy and cattle farming in the cerrado), deforestation of riparian zones, and sedimentation that can smother the rocky substrates on which benthic loricariids depend. The cerrado is one of the world's most threatened biomes; substantial portions have been converted to agriculture over the past 50 years.
Until targeted surveys establish the distribution breadth of H. minotauros within the Tocantins basin and assess population health, its conservation status remains genuinely unknown. The combination of endemism in a pressured basin and a 2024 description year means a formal IUCN assessment would be a valuable near-term contribution.
