One of the smallest members of a genus better known for its large, river-dominating species, Hypostomus obtusirostris is a compact coastal catfish from southeastern Brazil known from only a handful of specimens. At roughly 2.5 in total length, it is dwarfed by most of its congeners, and its biology outside of basic taxonomic data remains largely undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus obtusirostris was described by Franz Steindachner in 1907, making it one of the earlier additions to this large and taxonomically complex genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the combination Hypostomus obtusirostris as the valid name, with Steindachner as the sole authority.

The species belongs to subfamily Hypostominae within Loricariidae, the family of suckermouth armoured catfishes. Hypostomus is one of the largest genera in the family — and indeed among the most species-rich genera in all of freshwater fishes — encompassing a very wide range of body sizes, drainage affiliations, and ecological niches across South America. Within that assemblage, H. obtusirostris occupies a poorly-documented corner: a small coastal-drainage specialist from southeastern Brazil whose relationships to other Hypostomus lineages have not been resolved by modern phylogenetic analysis in a way captured in available sources.

Morphology

Hypostomus obtusirostris is a notably small species for its genus, with the maximum recorded size standing at approximately 2.5 in total length (TL). Steindachner's original description notes a broad, blunt snout — the character directly encoded in the species epithet — distinguishing it at least superficially from Hypostomus species with more pointed or elongate rostra.

Like all members of Hypostominae, the body is encased in rows of keeled, bony scutes that protect the flanks and dorsal surface, leaving only the soft ventral surface unarmoured. The underslung, disc-like mouth is equipped with bicuspid teeth arranged in elongated rows on both dentaries, adapted for rasping algae and biofilm from hard substrates. Beyond these general loricariid characteristics, detailed accounts of coloration, fin formula, or meristic data for H. obtusirostris are not available in sources consulted for this article.

Habitat

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus obtusirostris as Data Deficient in 2018, reflecting the limited specimen record for the species and the absence of reliable population data. The coastal drainage systems of southeastern Brazil support high levels of fish endemism and face considerable pressure from urbanisation, water extraction, and catchment-scale deforestation — particularly in heavily settled states such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Espírito Santo.

Whether H. obtusirostris is genuinely rare, locally common but overlooked, or restricted to a very small number of drainage fragments is not known. Its status warrants dedicated survey effort in the coastal basins of southeastern Brazil before a meaningful threat assessment can be assigned.
