A Vulnerable endemic of the Caribbean-draining rivers of northwestern Venezuela, Hypostomus pagei inhabits a handful of coastal basins — the Aroa, Tocuyo, and Yaracuy — cut off from the vast Amazon and Orinoco systems by the Venezuelan coastal cordillera. That geographical isolation is the source of both its scientific interest and its conservation concern: a restricted range endemic with a small total extent of occurrence and a declining freshwater habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus pagei was described by Jonathan W. Armbruster in 2003 in Zootaxa (No. 249), as one of four new species in his revision of the Hypostomus cochliodon group. The species is placed in subfamily Hypostominae by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which recognises Hypostomus pagei Armbruster, 2003 as valid.

The species is named in honour of the American ichthyologist Lawrence M. Page (b. 1944), who guided Armbruster during his career and personally participated in collecting many of the specimens on which the description was based. This eponym follows a longstanding tradition in loricariid taxonomy of honouring collectors and mentors in species epithets.

H. pagei is a member of the H. cochliodon group, a 12-species assemblage within Hypostomus characterised by progressive spatulation of the teeth correlated with wood-eating specialisation. Within the group, H. pagei is diagnosed by its coloration: light gray-brown, with spots that are considerably faded or absent in adults; juveniles show the caudal fin darkest along the spines and base, becoming clear medially. The pectoral-fin spine, when depressed, reaches 0–1 lateral plates beyond the pelvic fin. No L-number has been assigned.

Morphology

H. pagei is a moderate-sized loricariid, reaching a recorded maximum of 7.5 in standard length (SL). Body form follows the typical Hypostomus plan: dorsoventrally compressed, with a broad depressed head, ventral sucker-mouth, large triangular dorsal fin, and the trunk clad in bony scutes arranged in keeled longitudinal rows. The caudal fin is forked and the adipose fin is well-developed.

The coloration of adults is notably pale — light gray-brown, with spots that are faded or largely absent, distinguishing this species from the more boldly marked members of the cochliodon group. Juveniles are more distinctly marked, with the caudal fin darkest along the rays and base, and a clear, unpigmented medial band across the caudal fin that fades with age. The pectoral-fin spine length is a useful metric: when laid flat against the body it reaches only 0–1 lateral scute-plates beyond the pelvic fin origin, a character useful in distinguishing H. pagei from sympatric Hypostomus species.

Sexual dimorphism follows the family norm: breeding males develop elongated odontodes on the interopercular region and along the pectoral fin spines; females are visibly wider-bodied across the abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

H. pagei is documented from three small river basins draining the Caribbean versant of northwestern Venezuela: the Río Aroa, the Río Tocuyo, and the Río Yaracuy. These are independent coastal drainages that empty into the Caribbean Sea rather than into the Orinoco or Amazon systems, separated from those great basins by the Venezuelan coastal cordillera. A report from Suriname exists in the FishBase record, though the primary distributional focus is the Caribbean-versant Venezuelan rivers.

This biogeographic situation — a cochliodon group Hypostomus isolated on the short, coastal rivers of northwestern Venezuela — is unusual and ecologically significant. The Aroa and Yaracuy rivers drain the Sierra de Aroa region, documented in surveys by the UCLA Museum of Fishes (Universidad Centro-Occidental Lisandro Alvarado). The rivers of this region are characterised by relatively short courses, with seasonally variable flow, clear to moderately turbid water depending on rainfall, and substrates of rock, gravel, sand, and submerged wood. The species is demersal, freshwater, and a facultative air-breather.

Feeding

As a member of the H. cochliodon group, H. pagei possesses spatulate teeth adapted to some degree of wood-rasping. The extent of its xylophagous specialisation relative to other members of the group has not been specifically characterised, but the tooth form implies a capacity to rasp submerged wood and the biofilm of bacteria, fungi, and fine organic material that colonises its surface.

In captivity, a diet suited to a mid-sized cochliodon group Hypostomus is appropriate: quality algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, blanched vegetables (courgette, sweet potato, cucumber), and access to appropriately sized driftwood for grazing. Occasional protein supplementation via frozen invertebrates is acceptable in moderation. Given the species' restricted range and its current Vulnerable status, wild-caught specimens — if encountered — should be offered varied, nutritious food to support condition and longevity.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour specific to H. pagei are available. General Hypostomus biology provides the framework: males become territorial during the breeding season, claiming and defending suitable spawning sites (cavities in wood, rocky overhangs, undercut banks), and develop more pronounced interopercular odontodes as a secondary sexual signal. Females in spawning condition show a noticeably broader body profile across the abdomen.

Given the species' moderate adult size and its restriction to coastal rivers with distinct dry and wet seasons, reproductive activity may be seasonally cued by changes in water temperature and flow. No captive observations of courtship in this species exist in the accessible literature.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Hypostomus pagei appear in the available literature or hobbyist sources. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus and the cochliodon group, cave-spawning with paternal brood care is the expected mode: the male selects and guards a sheltered cavity, eggs are deposited adhesively on the cave walls, and the male fans and tends the clutch until hatching.

The species' maximum of approximately 7.5 in SL makes breeding in a suitably equipped aquarium theoretically feasible, but the near-absence of this species in the hobby means that documented breeding events, if they have occurred, have not been widely reported. No data on clutch size or incubation period are available.

In the aquarium

H. pagei is extremely rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade. Its primary range — the short coastal rivers of northwestern Venezuela — does not coincide with major commercial collection zones, and no dedicated trade supply exists. Any specimen entering the hobby is almost certainly a by-catch wild import.

For the rare keeper who obtains this species, a tank of at least 55 US gal with strong filtration, good water movement, and ample rockwork and driftwood is appropriate for an adult approaching the maximum size of ~7.5 in SL. Water parameters consistent with the Caribbean-versant Venezuelan rivers are suitable: temperature in the range typical for tropical lowland rivers, neutral to slightly alkaline pH reflecting the calcareous geology of parts of the Aroa/Tocuyo/Yaracuy region, moderate hardness.

Driftwood should be available for grazing. The fish should be maintained with peaceful, dissimilar tankmates. Given the species' Vulnerable conservation status, responsible husbandry — including good record-keeping and communication with other keepers — is encouraged in the very unlikely event of captive breeding success.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus pagei as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(iii) in January 2021. This designation reflects a restricted extent of occurrence driven by the species' limitation to three small Caribbean-versant river basins in northwestern Venezuela — the Ríos Aroa, Tocuyo, and Yaracuy — and an inferred continuing decline in the quality of freshwater habitat (criterion iii).

The Caribbean-draining rivers of northwestern Venezuela face significant pressure from deforestation and agricultural expansion in their catchments, water extraction for irrigation, and the impacts of urbanisation in coastal lowland zones. These pressures reduce water quality, alter flow regimes, and degrade the woody and rocky substrate microhabitats that Hypostomus species depend on. Because the entire known range of H. pagei occupies a small geographic footprint with no connectivity to the larger Orinoco or Amazon drainages, the species has no reservoir population elsewhere to buffer local declines.

No captive-breeding population exists as a conservation backstop. Surveys of freshwater fishes in the Sierra de Aroa region (UCLA Museum of Fishes) have documented the species, but ongoing systematic monitoring is limited. The Vulnerable assessment should be taken seriously: this is a species with genuinely limited range whose habitat is under sustained anthropogenic pressure.
