Described from the iron-plateau streams of the Serra dos Carajás in southwestern Pará, Hypostomus paucipunctatus belongs to the Hypostomus cochliodon group — a monophyletic clade whose members are distinguished by molariform teeth, a specialisation that equips them to scrape wood and strip hard substrates in ways unavailable to most of their relatives. Its name, meaning 'few-spotted', marks it out from closely related congeners that carry far denser spot patterns.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus paucipunctatus was formally described by Hollanda Carvalho and Weber in 2005, in a paper presenting five new species of the H. cochliodon group published in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie (volume 111, issue 4, pages 953–978). The species has no prior combinations; it was described directly into Hypostomus and carries no known synonyms. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Hypostomus paucipunctatus Hollanda Carvalho & Weber, 2005.

The species belongs to the H. cochliodon group, a monophyletic assemblage defined by molariform teeth — rounded, spoon-shaped tooth crowns adapted for processing hard food items, particularly wood and woody detritus. The group was described in the IUCN assessment as belonging to Tribe Hipostomini within subfamily Hypostominae (Loricariidae). Five new species were described simultaneously in the 2005 paper, all from the middle and lower Amazon system, reflecting the high taxonomic diversity of loricariids in the Amazonian highlands.

Within its genus, H. paucipunctatus can be compared to the better-known H. waiampi, H. oculeus, and H. pyrineusi — congeners with which it shares general body plan but from which it is distinguished by having widely spaced rather than densely packed spots (see Etymology).

Morphology

Hollanda Carvalho and Weber's 2005 description establishes a maximum recorded length of 7.5 in SL. As a member of the H. cochliodon group, the species possesses the defining character of this clade: molariform teeth with rounded, spoon-shaped (spatulate) crowns rather than the bifid (two-cusped) teeth that characterise most other Hypostomus. This dental specialisation is functionally significant, enabling more efficient processing of wood and hard organic substrates.

The specific epithet refers directly to coloration: spots are present but widely spaced, giving a 'few-spotted' appearance relative to the densely spotted H. waiampi, H. oculeus, and H. pyrineusi. Structural morphology follows the standard hypostomid plan: a broad, depressed head with eyes positioned dorsally; a ventrally placed sucking disc; overlapping rows of keeled bony scutes on flanks and dorsum; a large, erectile dorsal fin; and pectoral spines bearing uncinate odontodes. Detailed meristic counts and additional colour description are available in the original 2005 description. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for this species specifically, though male loricariids in general tend to develop odontodes on the pectoral spines and cheeks during the breeding season.

Habitat

Hypostomus paucipunctatus is endemic to the Rio Itacaiúnas basin in the Serra dos Carajás, Pará state, Brazil. The Rio Itacaiúnas is a right-bank tributary of the lower Rio Tocantins–Araguaia system, draining the southern flank of the Serra dos Carajás — an iron-rich highland plateau reaching approximately 1312–2953 ft elevation in southwestern Pará. The IUCN (2018) notes the species is recorded from the Floresta Nacional de Carajás and possibly from other conservation units in the wider Carajás region.

The Serra dos Carajás environment is characterised by ironstone outcrops (canga), gallery forest, and fast-flowing streams with rocky substrates — conditions typical of the type of habitat where cochliodon-group Hypostomus are often found: clear, well-oxygenated water over bedrock, boulders, and coarse gravel, with submerged wood present in pools and riffles. Specific water chemistry parameters have not been published for H. paucipunctatus collection sites. The broader Carajás region is a biodiversity hotspot for freshwater fishes, with numerous endemic loricariids known from its isolated drainages.

Feeding

The molariform dentition of the H. cochliodon group is the primary clue to diet. In related species, these spoon-shaped teeth are used to scrape wood surfaces and compress woody material, facilitating the ingestion of wood fibres, woody detritus, and the biofilm communities colonising submerged logs. Hollanda Carvalho and Weber (2005) note that species in this group are obligate or facultative wood-scrapers and periphyton grazers on rock surfaces — the same functional guild as the larger Panaque and Panaqolus.

No species-specific dietary observations have been published for H. paucipunctatus. By analogy with the rest of the H. cochliodon group, the presumed diet includes epilithic algae and periphyton scraped from rocks, biofilm from submerged wood surfaces, and woody detritus. Facultative air-breathing, noted for the genus by FishBase, may assist in exploiting low-oxygen microhabitats such as beneath submerged logs.

Mating

No behavioural or mating data have been documented for Hypostomus paucipunctatus. The species is known only from the scientific literature and has not been observed in the wild outside original collection events. In the absence of specific data, observations from related H. cochliodon group members suggest males in this group defend territories around rock crevices and wood accumulations and develop more prominent cheek and pectoral odontodes when reproductively active, but these inferences cannot be applied with confidence to H. paucipunctatus specifically.

Breeding

No reproductive data are available for Hypostomus paucipunctatus. The species has not been maintained in captivity and there are no records of captive breeding. Hypostomid catfishes for which reproductive biology is known typically spawn in cavities — burrows excavated in clay banks, rock crevices, or hollow wood — with the male providing parental care by guarding and fanning the egg clutch. Whether this applies to H. paucipunctatus is unconfirmed.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus paucipunctatus has no established presence in the aquarium hobby. It carries no L-number and no trade name, and is not commercially collected for the ornamental trade. Its range is restricted to the Serra dos Carajás — a region not historically associated with ornamental fish export — and no captive specimens have been reported in the hobby literature.

If live specimens were ever acquired by specialist keepers, the relevant guidance would draw on what is known about the H. cochliodon group: a diet centred on driftwood and biofilm-covered hard surfaces, supplemented with algae wafers and vegetables; clean, well-oxygenated water; and rocky or woody décor replicating the fast-flowing highland stream environment. An estimated adult size approaching 7.5 in SL would require a moderately large tank, though this figure is based on a limited type series.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus paucipunctatus as Least Concern in November 2018. The assessment was prepared by ICMBio and reviewed by A. Carapeto. The justification rests on two points: the species is recorded from within the Floresta Nacional de Carajás, a large federal protected area, and no significant threats to its population were identified at the time of assessment. No known synonyms exist and no taxonomic issues were flagged that would require future reassessment.

The Serra dos Carajás is home to large-scale iron-ore mining operations, making it one of the more environmentally pressured protected landscapes in the Brazilian Amazon. While the Floresta Nacional de Carajás provides formal protection, the integrity of its stream habitats depends on the management of tailings, sedimentation, and hydrological change associated with ongoing extraction in the broader region. The IUCN assessment notes that distribution limits of H. paucipunctatus beyond the type series have not been established, leaving its true range extent uncertain. Population size and trend data are lacking.
