Described only in 2014, Hypostomus perdido takes its name from the spring-fed river where it was found — the Rio Perdido of Mato Grosso do Sul, a clear-water tributary cutting through the limestone karst of the Bodoquena Plateau. It is a compact, medium-sized pleco known from a geographically restricted corner of the upper Paraguay basin, barely encountered in the aquarium hobby and essentially unstudied in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus perdido was formally described by Zawadzki, Tencatt, and Froehlich in 2014, published in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 12, number 1, pages 97–104, figures 1–2). The type locality is given precisely: the Rio Perdido at Bodoquena, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, at coordinates 21°17′09″ S, 56°41′47″ W. The type series was collected from this single locality in the upper Paraguay basin.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase both recognise Hypostomus perdido as a valid species. It belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803, which contains well over 100 valid species distributed across virtually every major South American drainage. Zawadzki and collaborators have been responsible for describing a number of new Hypostomus species from undersampled Neotropical river systems in recent decades, and H. perdido represents a typical product of that ongoing effort to document Paraguay-basin loricariid diversity.

No subspecies are recognised and no synonyms are listed. The species has not been assigned an L-number by the hobby press.

Morphology

The maximum recorded size is 7 in standard length (SL), equivalent to approximately 7 in — making H. perdido a medium-sized Hypostomus, somewhat below the upper size range of the genus. As in all members of the family Loricariidae, the body is armoured with rows of overlapping keeled bony scutes. The ventral surface is unarmoured and fleshy, pressed against the substrate during resting.

The mouth is positioned ventrally, functioning as a suction disc, and is armed with fine bicuspid teeth for scraping algae and biofilm from rocky surfaces. The lips are large, papillated, and fleshy. The eyes are positioned high on the head, providing a degree of predator-awareness while the fish feeds face-down on the substrate.

Beyond the measurements captured in the original description, detailed external morphological data for this species are not broadly available in the secondary literature. FishBase notes that habitat usage includes stretches with sluggish to still waters, which may be reflected in body proportions suited to slower current than some of its congeners. Like all Hypostomus, the species is a facultative air-breather, able to supplement gill respiration by gulping atmospheric oxygen.

Habitat

The type locality is the Rio Perdido, a river of the Bodoquena Plateau in southwestern Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The Bodoquena region is a karst limestone formation, and the rivers arising here — including the Rio Perdido and the better-known Rio Formoso and Rio Salobra — are fed by springs and characterised by exceptional water clarity, relatively stable temperatures, and neutral to slightly alkaline chemistry reflecting their limestone substrate.

The Rio Perdido drains into the Rio Paraguai (Paraguay River) basin, placing H. perdido within the broader Pantanal watershed system, one of the world's largest tropical wetland complexes. FishBase notes that this species favours river stretches with sluggish to still waters, consistent with the slower, pool-like sections common in spring-fed karst rivers.

The Bodoquena Plateau is geographically isolated, and its rivers support a number of endemic or near-endemic fish species. The restricted type locality and apparent absence of the species from other parts of the Paraguay basin suggest H. perdido may have a narrow natural range, though systematic survey coverage in the region is incomplete.

Feeding

No specific diet data for H. perdido are documented in the published literature. The genus Hypostomus grazes primarily on aufwuchs — the community of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, bacteria, and fine organic detritus that coats submerged hard surfaces. The fine rasping teeth and sucker-like mouth of Hypostomus are specifically adapted to this mode of feeding on rock, wood, and submerged root surfaces.

In clear-water karst rivers such as the Rio Perdido, where sunlight penetration is high and periphyton growth correspondingly lush, Hypostomus species can find abundant foraging surfaces. Submerged rock faces and wood are likely the primary feeding substrates in situ.

In captivity, Hypostomus of this size class should receive a diet based on algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato). Driftwood in the aquarium provides both grazing surface and shelter. Protein-rich foods may be accepted occasionally but should not dominate the diet.

Mating

No courtship or mating observations are published for H. perdido. Within the genus Hypostomus, males typically develop enlarged interopercular odontodes during the breeding season — elongated bristle-like structures along the cheek and snout margins that are used in male–male competition for cavities. Males that secure a suitable spawning site defend it actively against rival males while also attempting to attract ripe females.

The species was described from a geographically restricted spring-fed river subject to limited seasonal fluctuation compared with open-floodplain systems; reproductive seasonality cues in such environments are less pronounced than in rivers with dramatic wet/dry cycles, though some seasonal variation in temperature and flow likely still exists.

Breeding

No captive breeding of H. perdido has been documented in the accessible literature. Based on the genus, Hypostomus species are expected to be cave-spawning substrate guarders: the male selects a narrow cavity in submerged rock, wood, or a clay bank, the female deposits adhesive eggs inside, and the male remains on guard through incubation, fanning the clutch to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile eggs.

Given the restricted range and rarity in trade, captive breeding attempts — if any have occurred — have not entered the literature or major hobbyist databases. PlanetCatfish lists no breeding spot records for this species.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus perdido is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade. Its restricted range in the upper Paraguay basin and the relative inaccessibility of the Bodoquena karst region for commercial collection means it does not appear in mainstream ornamental fish commerce. No dedicated hobby care pages are established on major reference sites.

As a medium-sized Hypostomus reaching approximately 7 in SL (roughly 8.5 in total length), an adult would require at minimum a 200-litre aquarium. Robust mechanical and biological filtration is essential: Hypostomus produce significant organic waste, and water quality must be maintained with regular partial water changes.

The karst spring-fed origin of the type locality suggests this species comes from clear, well-oxygenated water with stable parameters — neutral to slightly alkaline pH, moderate hardness (reflecting the limestone substrate), and temperatures in the range typical of subtropical Mato Grosso do Sul (approximately 72–82 °F across seasons). These are less soft/acidic conditions than the Amazonian norm. Adequate hiding places — caves, large pipe sections, or driftwood — are essential, as Hypostomus are secretive and stressed without shelter.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus perdido as Least Concern (LC) in November 2018, noting that no major threats had been identified and that there was no evidence of severe population decline at the time of assessment. The evaluation acknowledged the species' restricted distribution within the Rio Perdido drainage of the upper Paraguay basin.

The Bodoquena Plateau and its spring-fed rivers are located in a region experiencing growing agricultural pressure, particularly from soy and cattle ranching, which affects water quality through sediment and agrochemical runoff. Ecotourism in the Bodoquena region has expanded significantly (driven by rivers such as the Rio Formoso at Bonito), which can bring both conservation attention and localised disturbance. The IUCN LC assessment was made with acknowledged uncertainty given limited survey data, and the restricted range of this species means that localised habitat degradation could have outsized effects on the population.
