Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus plecostomoides was formally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1922 in the Memoirs of the Carnegie Museum (volume 9, number 1, page 225, plate 11, figures 1–3). The original combination was Cochliodon plecostomoides; the species is now assigned to Hypostomus and accepted under that combination by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
The specific epithet plecostomoides is Greek-derived: it means 'resembling a Plecostomus' — the old catch-all genus name for suckermouth armoured catfishes, now largely retired but still embedded in the common name 'pleco'. The epithet therefore signals that this species was seen as a typical, archetypal representative of its group.
In the ornamental trade, H. plecostomoides circulates under two Das Aquarium (DATZ-affiliated) LDA codes: LDA038 and LDA042, both assigned independently to the same fish. The earlier code LDA038 takes precedence. No standard L-number exists. The common name 'Brown Pleco' is used informally in the trade but is applied to several species and should not be relied upon for identification.
Morphology
Hypostomus plecostomoides reaches a maximum recorded size of approximately 10 in total length (TL) — or 10 in SL per PlanetCatfish records (10 in / ~10 in), making it a medium-large representative of the genus. Maturity is reached at roughly 9 in standard length.
Body form follows the typical Hypostomus blueprint: a broadly depressed, heavily armoured head with a wide, ventrally placed suckermouth; a robust body covered in keeled bony scutes arranged in rows; and a powerful, laterally compressed caudal peduncle. Ground colour is brown, with variable darker spotting or mottling. The 'brown pleco' common name reflects the relatively uniform, earth-toned appearance rather than the bold patterning seen in more ornate congeners.
Sexual dimorphism has not been specifically documented for this species in published sources, but as in most Hypostomus, breeding males can be expected to develop odontodes on the snout and pectoral spines during the reproductive season, and females become noticeably broader-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Hypostomus plecostomoides is distributed across the middle Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela, with records from the Apure and Guárico River drainages as well as the middle main-stem Orinoco. The type locality is Quebrada Gramalote, Villavicencio, Colombia — a highland stream on the Andean piedmont draining toward the Orinoco Llanos.
The species is characteristically associated with swift-flowing, well-oxygenated rivers. Both FishBase and PlanetCatfish characterise its preferred habitat as clear, fast-moving water with high dissolved oxygen; substratum is likely rocky or mixed rock-and-sand, typical of Orinoco piedmont streams. Recorded water parameters for the species include pH 6.5–8.0 and temperature 70–81 °F — a moderately broad thermal tolerance consistent with rivers that experience seasonal fluctuation between Andean-influenced cool-season conditions and dry-season warming.
Feeding
As a Hypostomus, H. plecostomoides is primarily an aufwuchs grazer, using its ventrally positioned suckermouth to rasp periphyton — the community of algae, diatoms, biofilm, and fine organic detritus that colonises submerged rock and wood surfaces. In swift-flowing Orinoco rivers this substrate is continuously replenished by current-delivered nutrients.
In the aquarium, the diet should centre on sinking algae-based foods: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and sweet potato. Open surfaces of smooth rock or driftwood colonised by algae are valuable. Occasional supplementation with a small amount of protein (shrimp pellets, bloodworm) can be offered, though the diet should remain predominantly plant-based.
Mating
No detailed mating observations are documented for H. plecostomoides specifically. Within the genus, territorial males secure and defend crevice or cave sites prior to spawning. Competition between males can involve direct confrontation and odontode contact. Receptive females are guided into the prepared cavity.
The species' preference for fast, well-oxygenated water in the wild suggests that maintaining good current and high dissolved oxygen in captivity may be important for bringing animals into breeding condition.
Breeding
No aquarium breeding reports for Hypostomus plecostomoides are available in the hobbyist literature consulted. As with the genus broadly, the mode is presumed to be cave spawning with paternal brood care: the male guards an adhesive egg clutch deposited on a cave interior surface, fanning it until hatching and continuing to oversee the fry until they become free-swimming.
Given the species' size at maturity (~9 in SL) and association with high-current habitat, successful breeding in captivity would likely require a large, well-filtered tank with substantial water movement, appropriate cave structures, and conditioning on a varied, predominantly plant-based diet.
In the aquarium
At up to ~10 in total length, H. plecostomoides is a medium-large pleco that requires a tank of at least 65–80 US gal for a single adult to be housed comfortably long-term. The species is well-suited to robust community aquariums with large, peaceful fish but is not appropriate for nano or community tanks stocked with small fish.
Water quality should reflect the swift Orinoco piedmont environment: temperature 72–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.8, and good dissolved oxygen levels maintained by efficient filtration and moderate surface agitation. The species can tolerate a moderate hardness range.
Decoration should include flat stones or slate pieces for resting and grazing, lengths of driftwood, and well-secured caves or crevices (ceramic tubes, rock overhangs). Strong lighting encourages algae growth on hard surfaces, which provides natural grazing opportunity. Avoid overcrowding with other large plecos, as territorial disputes over grazing surfaces and hiding spots are predictable.
Overall, this is a hardy, unfussy fish for the fishkeeper able to provide appropriate space and water movement. Its undemanding feeding habits and tolerance of a broad pH range make it manageable for intermediate hobbyists.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus plecostomoides as Least Concern (LC) on 17 August 2020. The species is distributed widely across the Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela, with no evidence of significant population decline. The assessment found the species relatively common in its preferred swift-water river habitat and identified no major current threats.
The broader Orinoco basin faces pressures from deforestation and associated siltation, agricultural intensification in the Llanos, and hydroelectric development, all of which can degrade the clear, well-oxygenated fast-water habitats that species like H. plecostomoides depend upon. At present, the species' wide distribution provides a buffer against localised habitat degradation, but long-term monitoring remains important.
