Known to hobbyists as the Coffee Ground Pleco and catalogued as L242, Hypostomus rhantos is a medium-sized armoured catfish from the rapids of the upper Orinoco watershed in Amazonas state, Venezuela. Its fine pale spotting on a warm tan-brown body — described by its name as a 'sprinkled' pattern — sets it apart visually from the broader-spotted Hypostomus common in the trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus rhantos was formally described by Jonathan W. Armbruster, Mark H. Tansey, and Nathan K. Lujan in Zootaxa 1553 (pages 60–68) in 2007, based on material collected from Río Parucito at Raudales Salomon — a rapids site approximately 2 mi northeast of San Juan de Manapiare in Amazonas state, Venezuela. The holotype is deposited at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago (FMNH 119217).

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus rhantos Armbruster, Tansey & Lujan, 2007 as the valid name. No synonyms are recorded. In the German aquarium magazine DATZ, the species received the temporary code L242 before its formal description, and it continues to circulate under this number. Among Danish hobbyists it has acquired the common name Kaffegrumssugemalle — 'coffee grounds suckermouth' — alongside the English 'Coffee Ground Pleco', both referencing the characteristic spotted pattern.

The species belongs to genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803, the largest genus in Loricariidae, and is placed in subfamily Hypostominae. Armbruster's 2007 paper also described additional new Hypostomus species from the same expedition series, contributing substantially to the known diversity of the upper Orinoco fauna.

Morphology

Adults of Hypostomus rhantos reach approximately 7.5 in standard length (SL). The body conforms to the standard Hypostomus plan: a dorsoventrally flattened, heavily scuted torso with keeled bony plates covering the flanks and dorsal surface, an unplated ventral surface, and a broad sucker-type mouth positioned ventrally. The caudal fin is forked, with the lower lobe slightly elongated in adults as is common across the genus.

The diagnostic feature of H. rhantos — and the source of both its Latin name and its hobbyist common name — is the colour pattern. The ground colour is a pale tan to warm coffee-brown, overlaid with numerous small dark spots that create a finely stippled, coffee-ground-like appearance across the head, body, and fins. This contrasts with congeners bearing larger, more discrete spots or a plainer ground colour. The original description notes a broad interorbital space and specific dentary morphology as additional diagnostic characters distinguishing it from sympatric Hypostomus species. Sexual dimorphism has not been specifically characterised for this species, though males of most Hypostomus develop more pronounced interopercular odontodes than females during the breeding season.

Habitat

Hypostomus rhantos is known from the upper Orinoco drainage in Amazonas state, Venezuela. The type locality — Río Parucito at Raudales Salomon (5.346°N, 66.033°W) — is in the Río Manapiare–Ventuari tributary system of the upper Orinoco. FishBase lists the broader distribution as extending from Puerto Ayacucho to the Río Casiquiare, encompassing the Río Ventuari tributary catchment.

Raudales Salomon is a rapids site, indicating that H. rhantos is associated with fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over hard substrates — a pattern typical of Hypostomus from the Guiana Shield drainages. The waters of the upper Orinoco in this region tend to be warm and relatively soft and acidic, originating from Guiana Shield geology with limited buffering capacity. PlanetCatfish records a temperature range of 73–79 °F for the species. Specific field measurements of pH and conductivity at the collection site are not available in the consulted sources.

Feeding

As a member of Hypostomus, H. rhantos is an epilithic grazer — using its ventral sucker mouth to rasp periphyton, algae, and biofilm from rocks and submerged wood in fast-flowing water. Gut-content studies of Hypostomus species from comparable Orinoco and Guiana Shield habitats consistently show diatoms, filamentous algae, fine detrital material, and occasional invertebrate fragments.

Like all Hypostomus, it is a facultative air-breather, capable of surfacing to gulp atmospheric oxygen when dissolved oxygen levels fall — a trait that aids survival in warm, seasonally variable environments. In the aquarium, Hypostomus from rapids habitats generally accept sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and quality dried foods supplemented with driftwood for rasping. Only two keepers have registered this species on PlanetCatfish, and no detailed dietary observations from captivity are on record.

Mating

No courtship or mating behaviour has been observed or documented for Hypostomus rhantos in captivity or in the wild. General patterns across the genus suggest that breeding males defend shelter sites — rock crevices, undercut banks, or submerged wood — and use odontode displays to compete with rival males and attract gravid females.

Given the scarcity of this species in the hobby (two registered keepers on PlanetCatfish), no specific mating observations are available. Keepers maintaining a group at appropriate temperature and with suitable shelter sites would be well-placed to document this behaviour for the first time.

Breeding

No breeding records exist for Hypostomus rhantos in captivity. The species is rare in aquariums, and no spawning or fry-rearing reports appear in hobbyist databases. By analogy with other Hypostomus, the species is expected to be a shelter spawner with paternal brood care — the male guarding and fanning a clutch of adhesive eggs in a chosen cavity until hatching.

Given the rapids habitat of the type locality, conditioning adults with strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, and a slight temperature drop mimicking seasonal inflow may be relevant, but these are inferences from habitat data rather than proven captive protocols.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus rhantos reaches approximately 7.5 in SL — a manageable size for a pleco, but one that still requires a substantial tank with good filtration and water movement. Its origin in the rapids of the upper Orinoco points to a preference for well-oxygenated, clean water; stagnant or chronically nitrate-rich conditions would be inappropriate.

Only two individuals appear in PlanetCatfish's registered keeper database, making this a genuinely uncommon fish in the hobby. Its L242 code predates its formal description, so it has occasionally appeared in specialist importations of Venezuelan loricariids. Aquarists who obtain specimens should provide ample rock structure and submerged wood for rasping and shelter, maintain water at 73–79 °F, and keep regular partial water changes to preserve water quality. Cohabitation with similar-sized, non-aggressive species is generally appropriate for Hypostomus; conspecific and congener territorial behaviour should be managed by providing multiple distinct shelter sites.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus rhantos as Least Concern in August 2020. Its known range is restricted to the upper Orinoco basin of Amazonas state, Venezuela — a region that is relatively remote and has experienced less agricultural and urban development pressure than the lower Orinoco. The Río Ventuari watershed and its tributaries remain largely intact compared to more accessible Venezuelan river systems.

Nonetheless, Venezuela's political and economic instability since the 2010s has complicated conservation monitoring in remote Amazonian areas. Hydroelectric projects proposed for the upper Orinoco region represent a potential long-term threat to rapids-dwelling species. At present, the species is not considered at risk, but its apparently restricted distribution within the upper Orinoco means that significant habitat alteration in the Ventuari drainage could have an outsized impact on wild populations.
