Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus seminudus was originally described as Plecostomus seminudus by Eigenmann & Eigenmann in 1888. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts the current combination Hypostomus seminudus as a valid species within the genus Hypostomus, subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae.
The species has never been re-collected, and no subsequent taxonomic work has revised or redescribed it. It is effectively known from a single worn type specimen, which has limited confidence in the fine morphological details recorded at the time. Whether it represents a genuinely distinct species or a synonym of a better-known congener is unresolved.
Morphology
Morphological data are limited to what could be observed on the original holotype in 1888. As a member of Hypostominae, the fish would have carried the family's characteristic bony scute armour across the head and flanks, a ventrally positioned suctorial mouth, and the stout body plan shared across the Hypostomus radiation.
The specific epithet seminudus — Latin for 'half naked' — refers to a partially bare or unplated ventral surface noted in the original description, distinguishing this specimen from relatives with more complete abdominal plating. Beyond this, no reliable size, colour, or fin-count data are available. Adult maximum length is unknown; no measurement was recorded for the type, or any subsequent specimen has been found to measure.
Habitat
The type locality of Hypostomus seminudus is not recorded with sufficient precision to be mapped. FishBase lists the distribution broadly as 'South America,' but no river basin, country, or geographic coordinates are associated with the original description. Ecological data are entirely absent.
Given its subfamily assignment and the general habitat preferences of Hypostomus across South America, the species presumably occupied some form of freshwater river or stream environment, likely in close association with the substrate, but nothing specific can be stated with confidence.
Feeding
No feeding data are available for this species. Hypostomus species in general are predominantly algivores and biofilm grazers, using their suctorial mouths to rasp aufwuchs — algae, diatoms, detritus, and associated micro-organisms — from hard surfaces. Whether H. seminudus shared these habits, or whether it showed dietary specialisation of any kind, is unknown.
Mating
Data sparse. No information on mating behaviour is available for this species.
Breeding
Data sparse. No breeding records or observations exist for Hypostomus seminudus. The species has not been kept in captivity and has not been encountered in the wild since its original collection in 1888.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus seminudus has no presence in the aquarium hobby and has not been imported or kept in captivity. Given that the species is known only from a single deteriorated type specimen of unknown origin, no guidance on aquarium care can be offered.
Conservation
Hypostomus seminudus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The species is known solely from its 1888 holotype, and no locality data exist to define a range, assess population trends, or identify threats. Its conservation status is entirely unassessed, and without fresh collections or genetic evidence linking it to other specimens, meaningful evaluation is not possible.
